With Huckabee dropping out, it's hard for me to see how Mitt Romney doesn't win the Republican nomination. He and Huck polled significantly better than the rest of the dwarfs, and I thought that if the two of them battled each other, that might give one of the others in the race a chance to shine. But now Romney has a clear shot at winning both Iowa and New Hampshire, and if that happens then I think the opposition rapidly thins out.

Anyone disagree? Who do you see taking it from Romney, and how?

but romney passed health care in mass, no republican would vote for him....

After watching 60mins tonight I'd like to see Robert Gates run for President.

So it looks like the only hope for Obama haters is that someone upsets him in the primary.

Either way, the Repugnant party has no credible candidate that we know of.

I saw Ambassador Huntsman in a relatively impressive Q&A at the War College in January. He's had gubernatorial experience and is about as Centrist as the R's get. He understands foreign policy (especially China, obviously), and has shown he can work bi-partisanally.

Romney isn't in my top 3 of preferred candidates for president. Ron Paul, Gary Johnson, and Obama are the top 3.

I would have to agree. If the republicans want to win back the White House, it has to be via a moderate republican who can draw in independent voters and that's Romney. However, I wonder if he can get the vote out for hard core conservatives and the religious right.

Romney has the looks. I haven't decided which Republican I'm for, but I'm definitely against Obama, who is Bush Jr. With Romney's looks, he's probably the only one who could win.

someone will just mention that romney believes all christians will go to hell, and that god lives near the star system of kolob. oh and magic underwear.

Paul or Obama is it for me.

Gary Johnson albeit a great man/candidate, I don't believe he has the gusto to be an American President. I'll admit that's just based off the just first debate, but he's got some stiff competition.

I think Democrats are more likely to make that statement than Republicans.

There's a marked difference between passing health care at the state level and at the federal level in the eyes of many.

I consider it a states issue anyway.

Did anyone see this interview?

I think Gates would add a lot to this election.

I've liked him for a while now. He seems quite unpartisan. Near the end of his time as SoD, he was telling it like it is.

Saying things like "The next presidents who wants to invade a middle east country with ground forces should have his head examined" and stuff like that.

He is great, and obviously has no problem working under either side.

May not be presidential material though. Who knows.

Huh? So, if you can't have a Libertarian in office, you want to skip across the political spectrum and pick the most statist? Can you explain your reasoning? I'm not calling you out, I'm just interested in your reasoning.

That entire interview I couldn't help but think what it would have been like if it were undertaken when Gates was SecDef under Bush rather than Obama. Same person, largely the same policies, but a different boss. I can't help but think it wouldn't have been quite so fawning.

That's my viewpoint. I had no problem with our state creating the Oregon Health Plan (although I didn't agree with it), but I have a huge problem with Obamacare.

I bet the Libertarian guys can work with a republican congress to slash and burn. I trust them to veto the asinine social agenda things they'd pass as well.

Barring that ideal outcome, gridlock is the next best thing. And Obama is a good guy with a lot of positives aside from poor governance.

In other words, if you can't get Tom Thibedou, might as well keep Nate McMillan. :devilwink:

Really?

I was thinking I wonder how Iraq and Pakistan would have gone if we had Gates as Sec Def instead of Rumsfeld during the entire time.

I really didn't think the interview was fawning at all.

Patraeus was the guy that won it, not Gates, IMO.

And I officially changed my voter's registration from independent to Libertarian Party today.

You are aware that the Oregon Health Plan is a massively expensive program (to Oregon taxpayers) serving a tiny minority of well-connected Oregonians.

Seems like it's the exact kind of big government waste you are usually opposed to.

Gates failed miserably as SoD, and owns quite a large portion of the blame for our country's financial predicament.

Already in over his head and beyond his capabilities, I doubt he could survive a 4 year term as Pres without being impeached for incompetence.

Gary Johnson has some good ideas, but his war on the poor and his promise to cut medicare and social security by half pretty much kills any realistic chance for him to even be taken seriously.
