dude Mexican Coke is the BEST! we fight over that stuff in our family!

Having Costco sell it has hampered our attempt to quit soda. Mexican Fanta is also tasty. I bought a normal Fanta a few months back and it was horrible. Way worse than what you get in Europe or the Mexican version.

lol yeah the 18 pack or whatever from Costco. That has been the standard house warming gift in our family for a few years now. and re Fanta... yeah I havent had one of those since I was last in Mexico and had it from a Sandwich bag with a straw lol. (Fanta here is AWFUL)

Nice work HCP!
My rule - I dont drink pop unless there is whiskey in it.
Pop is a waste... makes ya fat. At least ya get drunk when you get fat drinking beer!

I switched to diet sodas a few months back, and not only did my blood sugar levels drop out of the danger zone for diabetes, a pack of smokes now lasts me almost two whole weeks.

Hey Wookee, I gave up smoking the first of the year, so understand I am a hypocrite who smoked well beyond the point of knowing how bad it was for me.

I am a research assistant up at OHSU and about 3 years ago much of my research started targeting the inflammasome and related pathways, a key cog in the inflammatory process. Very recently, over the past few months our research has taken us towards how smoking affects the inflammatory process. Although a reduction in smoking may reduce cancer rates, the research is showing that the decrease does not seem to greatly affect the systemic inflammation caused by smoking. What I mean is, if you smoke 2 packs a day or 2 cigarettes a day, the inflammation in your lungs and throughout your body will be similar (just a slight increase inflammation with increased smoking), and that it takes about two weeks of zero smoking to start to see a nice reduction in inflammation. And it really takes about 5 years for the body to return to never-smoker levels of systemic inflammation.

I'm just letting you know this because if you can cut down to a pack every couple weeks, the next step of becoming a total non-smoker really isn't that hard. I just did it. And the systemic inflammation may prove to have all sorts of effects from lethargy and soreness to higher likelihood of septic shock.

It's not hard for me not to drink it, the only carbonated drink I can stand is Sprite. I think Coke, Dr. Pepper, and any other dark sodas just taste disgusting. Haven't had one in at least 5 years.

What's wrong with water, people?

Yeah, water very easily fills any void of needing something to drink for me. I keep a 32oz. nalgene type bottle around, and go through 3 or 4 a day. Keeps me drinking that enough that I don't feel the need to look for a coke.
Also agree about sprite. Not a big fan of the others any more.

Whatever you call it....... has been my one vice over the years. Even though I know how bad it has been for me, I continued to drink it.

Well this is the 8th day I have gone without any!!! I can not think of a day in the past 21 years or so that I haven't had any. For years I had a couple big gulps a day.......

I don't smoke or drink on the regular, so this is a very big deal for me. First couple days I had a horrible headache, but been fine ever since. Hope I can keep this up.

Any of you guys ever done this, would love to hear about how it went for you.

Coke Classic all the way. I try to keep it to no more than one per day.

I think you've posted that before, but weight gain isn't the only health concern. Of course for diabetics, sugar free options is the best choice, but I don't think it is for relatively healthy person. That'd be like saying a gluten free diet is the best option for all people because some are sensitive to gluten. Or Atkins is the best since some people are helped by cutting out all carbs.

The problem is that people tend to drink 2-3 sodas a day, and that's 20% of the RDA for calories.

That just can't be healthy.

I have a regular soda once in a blue moon. Maybe 2-3 times a year even.

Yeah, that isn't healthy. But I'd say 2-3 diet sodas isn't healthy either. Its just less measurable on the ill effects. Seeing that 3 cans is 450 calories or 120 grams of sugar is easy, but the effects of aspartame and everything else in diet coke is hard to see. Neither is probably all that bad in moderation, but then again, moderation isn't something that Americans do very well.

If I drank 2-3 regular sodas a day, I'd be built like HCP in no time.

Sweet soda (whether sugary or not) kind cause all kinds of metabolic problems. Obviously too much sugar can put you on a path to obesity and type II diabetes, but even diet soda can cause havoc with your metabolism, because it can trigger an insulin response and with no sugars to actually break down you get wild fluctations in insulin levels.

dude I love Coke. Maybe its the Mexican in me, and learning while down in Mexico to have Coke with Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.

The headaches will suck for a while. But keep it up. I still have Pop in moderation (maybe one a week) but you will feel better if you stick with it.

I loved coke until it burned a whole in my nose and I lost a lot of money and friends. Now I stay away from it like the plague.

I quit soda about 2 years ago as part of my losing weight (25 lbs) and being healthier regime. I loved drinking it, but now I don't have the desire anymore. On occasion I'll have one every 4 months or so, but its so overwhelmingly sweet tasting that I cant even finish 1/2 of a can. Good luck.

You've lost 25 lbs? Good for you man...... Did you start exercising as well?

I used to be a Mountain Dew addict. I would fill a 32oz bottle at 7am every day, and often refill again at lunch time. If I went more than a day without, I would get a miserable headache. I decided in Feb '08 to go off it cold turkey, and it sucked. Nowadays I will have an occasional soda, but rarely more than 2 in any given week.

Three times in the past year, I've chosen to go a full month drinking nothing but water (third time was in March). Each time it's gotten easier. HCP posted the article about calories consumed if you have a big gulp every day, but most non-soda drinks contribute a lot of calories as well. I lost 12 pounds in March with absolutely no effort by simply eliminating all liquid calories.

Just did a rough estimate and I'd say by me not drinking soda for the past 8 days, I didn't consume 3,600 empty calories. Now I worked a bunch this week and haven't been able to get to the gym. I am going tomorrow, so hoping this is something I can continue.

Always, ALWAYS have bottle of water with you. And you can drink a bottle if you're feeling hungry but don't think you should eat yet. Sometimes, I just drink as much water as I can stomach.

Yes, I also exercised. I immediately stopped drinking soda, then eliminated all fast food and started working out.. The exercising part took awhile to build up to, but now its become a way of life. Same with eating right. I certainly don't deprive myself of food, but eat smarter. Soda was the first step.

hehe thats the Colombian kind. Mexican is way better ;)

The only time I drink soda is when I'm hungover for some reason I crave one. My vice is Ice Cream. Specifically Tillamook. I have a big bowl every night. I'm a very active person though with a good metabolism so I can get away with it.

Mrs. HCP tells me she learned long ago how to cope with your headache excuse and your keeping it up.

I like Coke and Sprite but I drink that maybe once a month.

There's some Hispanic Cola I drink every once in a while as well.

Easter was the last day I had a drink of soda....... Couldn't help myself, had to weigh myself this morning......... The HCP has lost 8 pounds.......... FAMS!

I've found that replacing one non-diet soda each day with an apple cider vinegar enema makes my farts smell like Easter egg dye.
