SI did a poll of NBA players asking the coach they'd most like to play for and the coach they'd least like to. The results:

Which coach would you like to play for the...

MOST?

DOC RIVERS, CELTICS 22%
MIKE D'ANTONI 21%
GREGG POPOVICH, SPURS 16%
RICK CARLISLE, MAVERICKS 6%
RICK ADELMAN, T-WOLVES 5%

LEAST?

STAN VAN GUNDY, MAGIC 22%
SCOTT SKILES, BUCKS 14%
BYRON SCOTT, CAVALIERS 9%
FLIP SAUNDERS 6%
MIKE D'ANTONI 4%

FAST FACTS

The active coach with the best winning percentage, the Bulls' Tom Thibodeau (.767), was sixth (4%) on the most list.... The Pistons' Lawrence Frank and the Lakers' Mike Brown also received 4% of the least vote.... Saunders was fired by the Wizards (for whom he was 51--130) on Jan. 24; D'Antoni resigned from the Knicks (121--167) on March 14.... Van Gundy also finished eighth (3%) on the most list. Rivers didn't receive a single least vote.

BASED ON 134 NBA PLAYERS WHO RESPONDED TO SI'S SURVEY

I couldn't care less what the players think. They get paid millions of dollars to be professionals and do their job. If you start hiring coaches based on who the players might like, you're letting the inmates run the asylum.

The inmates have been running the asylum for a long time now.

Unfortunately, in the NBA, you have to care what the players think, especially in a small market city like Portland. Not saying it's right, butthat is the reality of the NBA.

A noble sentiment, but if the team wants to maximize its potential when it comes to free agency my advice would be to steer clear of SVG, Flip Saunders and Mike Brown (after he inevitably gets fired in a month).

the inmates have been running shit for a while not. like it or not, the nba is a players league and they get coaches hired and fired all the time.

It's more important to consider which coach the fans will pay to see.

Carlisle used to be known as tough on his players. What is van Gundy's story, anyway?

Maybe for the first time in as long as I can remember, the most important thing the Blazers could do is let the fucking GM pick his coach because they have to work together

God, I hate the "inmates running the asylum". It's one of the lines people like Shooter endlessly repeat without thinking. Nice little meaningless sound bite.

First, NBA players, at least the vast majority, are not insane. They are not prisoners. They are not inmates. They are highly skilled employees who know their craft. And the vast majority want to succeed.

Second, they make make shitloads of money, but working for a boss they loathe is still a drag. Ever had to report to someone who was incompetent, had zero people handling skills, pit workers against one another, punished workers for being knowledgeable or taking initiative? I have. It's the shits. Even when well paid.

Finally, if you have a person who, in whatever field, over and over, does not get along with the people with whom he/she needs to have a working relationship, in chance after chance, sometimes you have to figure out that the problem is that individual. It's the conclusion I've reluctantly come to with Keith Olbermann (no, don't turn this political, he's just an example of a guy whose audience liked him but in EVERY job he came to a bitter end). Why are coaches different? No one would have won with this year's Wizards, to be sure. But some coaches get players to overachieve and with others they always seem to underachieve. Isn't that what separates good coaches from crummy? And I think players do know who the good and crummy coaches are.

Perfectly stated.

OK. Let's have the players hire the coach and the coach work for the players. That's a great idea!

Mike D'Antoni has never won an NBA title, yet he is one of the most "popular" coaches in the league, apparently. That's all you need to know about the value of picking a coach based on how much the players like him.

D'Antoni was essentially tied with Doc Rivers and Popovich for most popular coach.

I don't agree with your posts. It is a stupid attitude and doesn't work well.

How many titles does Stan Van Gundy have?

Some fans think the only worthwhile coaches are those who have won titles. This would preclude coaches who have never won a title from ever being hired.

That's all you need to know about the value of picking a coach based on fans opinions. Can't let the inmate fans run the asylum. Those fuckers are crazy.

Prophet, it's easy to ridicule what someone didn't say.

for all intensive porpoises, i cant believe all these people putting dantoni on a petal stool, he doesnt peak my interest

With the right pieces, which he didn't have in NY, his offense is the best in the NBA.
