Saunders was fired by the Wizards (for whom he was 51--130) on Jan. 24; D'Antoni resigned from the Knicks (121--167) on March 14.... Van Gundy also finished eighth (3%) on the most list. Rivers didn't receive a single least vote.

Unfortunately, in the NBA, you have to care what the players think, especially in a small market city like Portland. Not saying it's right, butthat is the reality of the NBA.

First, NBA players, at least the vast majority, are not insane. They are not prisoners. They are not inmates. They are highly skilled employees who know their craft. And the vast majority want to succeed.

Second, they make make shitloads of money, but working for a boss they loathe is still a drag. Ever had to report to someone who was incompetent, had zero people handling skills, pit workers against one another, punished workers for being knowledgeable or taking initiative? I have. It's the shits. Even when well paid.

Finally, if you have a person who, in whatever field, over and over, does not get along with the people with whom he/she needs to have a working relationship, in chance after chance, sometimes you have to figure out that the problem is that individual. It's the conclusion I've reluctantly come to with Keith Olbermann (no, don't turn this political, he's just an example of a guy whose audience liked him but in EVERY job he came to a bitter end). Why are coaches different? No one would have won with this year's Wizards, to be sure. But some coaches get players to overachieve and with others they always seem to underachieve. Isn't that what separates good coaches from crummy? And I think players do know who the good and crummy coaches are.

Some fans think the only worthwhile coaches are those who have won titles. This would preclude coaches who have never won a title from ever being hired.
