that was a different module in Texas than at the Cape which is the Falcon 9 rocket/module

the module in Texas was latest in a line of experimental SpaceX modules they are trying to develop. The goal is a completely re-usable launch vessel. It's experimental in many different ways including trying to develop a methane based engine. IIRC, it also is using new alloys for the housing. So far, the failures have been steady and sometimes spectacular

No it didn't blow up. It successfully docked with the space station this morning at about 7:16 am our time.

Also, no more core memory. Core memory uses little toroids to store each bit of data magnetically rather than the solid state memory they use today. They used core memory to get around gamma ray damage back when solid state design was affected by gamma rays.
