Spotify says it’s a creator company now

Spotify released its quarterly earnings today during a particularly fraught time for the company. Its star podcaster, Joe Rogan, spurred multiple musicians to pull their discographies from the platform over his show’s spreading of misinformation; Spotify-employed podcasters themselves spoke out, and even the White House responded.

CEO Daniel Ek fielded questions about the backlash to having Rogan on the platform and stood by the company’s decision to host, distribute, and monetize the show. He instead tried to reframe the discussion as one of free speech and making Spotify a platform that can help all audio creators make a living, regardless of their opinions.

“We’re trying to balance creative expression with the safety of our users, and of course, this is a very complicated issue,” he said. He also added that it was too early to know whether Rogan-spurred cancellations would represent a substantial problem.

He then pointed to the company’s promise to roll out a COVID-19 disclaimer on any podcast episode that discusses the virus, as well as its public rollout of its content moderation policies as things he feels “really good about.”

“I do believe they’re right for our platform,” he says, adding that although Rogan is the top podcaster in 90 markets on its platform, the company has “something for everyone,” including all advertisers, which is becoming a bigger part of the company’s bottom line.

I don't see the big deal. I've listened a few times to Rogan, he just kind of does a narrative interview, asks questions, makes comments.

Shit is too long for me to listen to consistently though.

He has some good shows. He's good at asking questions and having a discussion. And he gets great guests.

He's not a doctor and should not be giving medical advice. Some people may stand for that. Many will not, and will pull support for it.

I was considering signing up for Spotify, but am no longer considering it.

Yeah, that's kind of the same for me. If he has a guest I'm interested in I may give a listen but jesus, they are long. A few of my buddies listen to every word as gospel. Idiots.

“For those wondering if people like Neil Young leaving Spotify or average people cancelling their accounts, has had an impact on the company; Spotify stock has dropped over 12% in overnight trading. It's lost almost $30B in one day.

Dr. Rogan sure stepped in it

What was the misinformation? Was there a specific clip or quote people are referring to? Or he’s just bad in general? I rarely listen to a full episode, but do see quite a few YouTube clips, he seems pretty mild mannered and even left of center politically.

He had Dr. Robert Malone on his show

Yeah, Rogan is full of shit here.
You would never have been banned from a legit website just for saying you could still catch and spread covid-19 while wearing masks or after being vaccinated.

It has always been known that it's possible to catch and spread covid-19 despite both, but at lower rates than without.

Who's got time to watch that drivel?

Spotify’s Problems Grow as More Artists Join Boycott
Authors, podcasters join musicians in leaving streaming service

The list of musicians and podcasters banding together to remove their content from Spotify Technology SA is growing, adding to the streaming service’s troubles. Spotify also offered subscriber projections on Wednesday that fell below Wall Street forecasts for the first quarter, sending its stock tumbling in late trading.

The streaming giant has faced mounting criticism after singer-songwriter Neil Young followed through on threats to remove his music from Spotify. He accused the streamer’s star podcaster, Joe Rogan, of spreading vaccine misinformation on his show, “The Joe Rogan Experience.”

In a letter posted on his website, Young wrote: “They can have Rogan or Young. Not both.” A day later, Young announced his music would come off the platform.

Joe Rogan is my hero.

Spotify CEO defends Joe Rogan deal in tense company town hall
He says Spotify is a platform for Rogan, but publisher for Gimlet

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek addressed employees about the Joe Rogan controversy in a 15-minute speech yesterday, of which The Verge obtained audio, defending the company’s choice to work with Rogan, explaining its reasoning, and defining why he believes Spotify is a combination of a platform and a publisher. Employees had been skeptically awaiting the discussion at the company’s regular town hall meeting for nearly a week: since things had escalated with Joe Rogan, the company’s star exclusive podcaster, employees had been venting inside the corporate messaging system and awaiting a response from leadership about why it chose The Joe Rogan Experienceover Neil Young, setting off a domino effect of other musicians and podcasters pulling content off the service......(CONTINUED)

I'll say this... If Joe lays off the medical advice and is smarter about having legitimate professionals on air around the same time as his controversial guests (or even at the same time) I'd be interested in paying more attention.

He has an opportunity to do something very productive here. He could actually moderate "debates" about important topics and people may actually listen.

I don't think Joe Rogan is a charlatan the same way an Alex Jones, Bill O'Reilly, Donald Trump, etc is.

Joe Rogan is a guy who over the last couple of years moved his base from LA to Austin and started catering to the Bill O'Reilly audience and got a 100 million dollar deal with Spotify....he's used the Trump fever as a cash cow with lots of his covid era guests and the vax people he took on aggressively....now he's saying he doesn't know anything but he argues with people who do know things and caters to playing both sides against the middle....I've listened to him and he can say he doesn't know anything and is just a dumb comic but he doesn't come off that way in conversations...he's very much leaning towards the cash cow and milking that audience...that's his choice.....I don't have to listen to him and artists don't have to share a platform with him....choices. If he's your hero you're easily duped by a shock jock. He's another reality tv guy who got a whole lot of cash for nothing ....guy isn't talented in my view...he's just milking topics of controversy and cashing checks like Bill Maher is.

To each their own.

Joe Rogan is my hero.

11 million-ish people per episode, apparently. About 10 times more people than CNN’s top shows pull.
You think the majority of people who listen to him own guns and are against abortion? Voted for Trump? Don’t think there is such a thing as global warning? Supported the attacks on January 6th? Or am i just making assumptions again. Or what was the term you used….. I was “shitting” on people?

I would say he is talented though, as a conversationalist. More so than Bill Maher.

I don't think he's a shock jock. Just a guy who's entertaining to talk with. Getting him to understand that he needs to be responsible about these important topics could be an important step forward...

Ugh. Go away.

I think he caters to the dollar and I don't think he's talented personally but some do.....Maher is way brighter than Rogan...Rogan talks mostly about getting stoned and working out and as I said....plays both sides against the middle....a guy like Maher has a political identity and is way smarter than Rogan ...Rogan will admit that but he's popular probably from reality tv just like Trump was with some....I don't think he's a very good comedian either. He certainly walks alot of his schtick back often as he's done with this issue. To each their own. Obviously a lot of folks follow his podcast.....I'm a guy who gave him a listen and didn't go back for more.
Yeah, I'm not interested in much of his stuff, but he does get good guests and I like his conversation style when he has interesting guests on. Maher just comes off as an unrelatable elite.

I feel like Rogan, if he were not solely motivated by the dollar, could be a voice which could help the nation heal, as he's more relatable to the working class.

Just holding out hope that he's sincere. We'll see...

You guys love your reality tv personalities.....please don't vote for this dufus to be president like you did the last one ...to each his own.....how's that Trump l0yalty working out for you now? He was your own!......twice!....aw shucks doesn't make that stain go away.

Fair enough, but when Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden are your alternative choices, you do what you gotta do.

True enough. That said, who's truth are you following? And is it a moving target? I mean, really, what absolutes have been maintained in these past few crazy years?

Kinda reminds me of a song....

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

PS: Check out Mike Rowe's podcast: The Way I Heard It. He's pretty solid.

What you did with your choice led to 9 deaths from Capitol Hill so if that's what you have to do...fuck that. Both those folks are way more trustworthy than the traitor in chief you gushed over for 4 years. I never voted for Hillary.....had to vote for Joe and am really glad we weeded your psychopathic orange asshole out of office...not only him but his merry puppets as well....your party is dipped in shame. Own it. You are supporting an authoritarian fascist majority in your party . Do better!

You must have missed my many posts that I would in no way be voting for him again.

True enough. That said, who's truth are you following?
There is only one truth.
I absolutely despise the "my truth" bullshit. If you need your own special "truth" then you don't actually know the truth.

Just ask the CDC/WHO what "truth" is. Is it the same "truth" as a year ago? Two years ago?

Hillary and Biden are miles better than Trump. And I can't stand Hillary. I barely tolerate Biden.

But that's the deal. They're going to give us catastrophic people's choices forcing us to choose their corrupt "lesser evil".

That's what we get for letting the ultra rich and corporations run our politics...
