Spurs sitting Duncan, Parker, and Ginobili against the Nuggets

The funny thing is, and I know I'm late to the game in this...

Doesn't anyone think it's odd that a team (forget that it's the Spurs, or against our division leader) sits its three stars, none of whom are on the NBA injury list, in a mid-February game? I could understand if Pop didn't want Manu to play, to rest up; or having Duncan sit once it became out-of-hand...but can you guys tell me the last couple of times a team sat three, non-injured all-stars outside of a week away from the playoffs?

I understand that trying to make posters feel dumb is part and parcel of the board posting process, but does anyone have anything to contribute about the subject at hand?

Just knowing of this right now... very bizzare. I don't think I've ever seen anything like this happen. Way to mail it in Spurs.

I would be pissed too, but a team has every right to sit there players for whatever reason they want to. Maybe they are just tired, who knows.

Really? Yet Darius Miles being claimed by the Blazers and not played "for whatever reason they want to isn't allowed by the NBA? Odd

what's the problem here?

the spurs can do whatever they want. they played an overtime game last night and are on a long road trip. rather than push his stars too hard, he's giving them the night off on a 2nd night of a back to back to get them rested up before their next game.

More ammo for the Blazers' legal challenge of the NBA not allowing them to claim and sit Darius Miles.

False. This is CIP's house. His house, his rules.

I get bashed for pointing out how ridiculous the mods are here, and others get repped for riding my coattails.

I'll take barfo, Ed O., and especially Minstrel over this JE guy any time, however.

The subject at hand is obvious, and the only reason this thread went south is because moderators from other boards came to flame (by far) the most active board on this site for calling BS when they smelled BS.

manu did have an injury.

so now the mods are out to get the blazers again and the blazers deserve special treatment because they have the biggest, most active group? this doesn't sound familiar at all.

I'm only stating the obvious. These small-board mods come to whiff the excitement and ultimately end up in flame wars with regular Blazer posters. I wasn't even involved this time, yet I see long-time Blazer posters insulted by kids with a mod title.

So, what are the reasons?
i said that manu was injured. which you responded to by asking if he was on the practice squad.

i'd assume the other guys sat because it was the 2nd night of a back to back, last night's game went into overtime, and tonight's game was being played in denver.

Their next game is Sunday. I'm not surprised many here would assume the best about the Spurs' intention by sitting 3 All-Stars tonight, and also the worst about the Blazers' intention regarding has-been Darius Miles.

Many people here seem to only want to assume guilt when it is Paul Allen and his team. Other teams get a pass, and posters who call out other teams get ridiculed.

Assume the Spurs wanted to rest their big three and Finley... are they better off resting them all for one game, seriously impairing their ability to win that one game, or better off resting them spread across multiple games, hurting their chances in more than one?

It sucks that it was against the Nuggets tonight, but there's nothing wrong here that I can see. The Spurs have a rodeo road trip coming up and Popovich wants them closer to full strength. It makes sense to me. I'm not sure that I'd want MY team's coach to do it, but it makes sense.

Why not just cut their minutes as "rest"? They have 4 full days off after today.

Case in point about assuming the best about other teams, BTW.

By not playing them, they did not have to warm up. They did not have to reach game speed. They got another full day of rest.

The better question, of course, is: Why not just sit them out tonight?

I have no idea what you're talking about.

It's the Spurs right to play who they want to. I have to say I don't get it though - just giving a game away to a potential playoff foe could cost you home court. I know they played a double OT game the night before, but as has been mentioned - they now have 4 days off until the Sunday game with Boston. 4 days isn't enough time off?

Why not just let Manu sit out? (if he's hurt) Why not start the other two and must monitor their minutes?

This is great though. We can pass SA. We may get the 2 seed. That would be amazing.

good... leave em on the bench and give more minutes to my boy MALIK!!!!!! HAIRSTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The NBATV guys kept saying how he was just beating melo in an attempt to defend him and how he went to oregon state. I guess OSU is the only relevant pac-10 bball team in Oregon now.

LOL! +1, we suck. I've never been a college bball fan but I did enjoy our recent trips to the elite 8, I just find if funny how bad we suck right now. Either way, college football is really the only college sport that matters to me... thank God, or i'd be depressed.

I'm confused. What was the reason?

rest i suppose.

Just a couple notes from this game, and perhaps this has been mentioned in this thread (I'm not reading 5 pages filled with petty bickering to see if it had been mentioned)

Billups tweaked an ankle and is day to day. Not a huge deal, unless it keeps him out longer. Billups has had issues in the past with sprained ankles so who knows.

And Mailk Hairtson got his first real NBA action and had 12 points and 5 rebounds on 6-8 shooting. Nice job Mailk, glad to see a hard working deserving player get a little run.

And another question, why does it seem like just about every thread turns into bickering back and forth between posters? What's the problem with having differing opinions and just moving on? Christ are we not all adults...

It becomes very frustrating to continue reading pages of crap to get the few good bits of info out of a valuable thread. Like why the Spurs didn't play their starters? I finally gave up and read the game recap. I'm sure I'll be made fun of for voicing this opinion, but seriously why all the pissing matches?

I'd just like someone to point out when this has happened before. As far as i can check (googling "Spurs rest starters" for 2006, 2007, and 2008) I can't find a single article about them resting starters a whole game. There're a bunch of articles about "giving them the fourth quarter off", or no-practice days on the rodeo trip, but I can't find one that talks about a team resting 3 all-star caliber starters for a real game outside of a week or two from the playoffs starting.
