Disney and Lucasfilm are excited to announce that principal photography on Star Wars: Episode VII, directed by J.J. Abrams, will commence May 2014, and will be based at London's historic Pinewood Studios.

This will be the first Star Wars film to start shooting in the month of May. Lucasfilm has documented the first day of principal photography for every installment of the Star Wars saga:

March 22, 1976 -- The first day of principal photography in Tozeur, Tunisia, for Star Wars. A crew of 130 ventures into the desert in 42 trucks and cars, including eight army trucks full of equipment. The first shot was completed at 9:35 a.m.
March 5, 1979 -- The first day of principal photography in Finse, Norway, for The Empire Strikes Back. The crew endures the subzero temperatures, frostbite, heavy winds, and avalanches to pull off the first shot within 65 minutes of setup.
January 11, 1982 -- The first day of principal photography at EMI Elstree Studios outside of London for Return of the Jedi. Although inside a studio, the set must weather a sandstorm in a scene that would ultimately be cut from the film.
June 26, 1997 -- The first day of principal photography at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, England, for The Phantom Menace. Ending a long absence from the director's chair, George Lucas shoots a sequence in a bluescreen-lined set with actors Ian McDiarmid and Ray Park.
June 26, 2000 -- The first day of principal photography for Attack of the Clones at Fox Studios Australia. In their new home Down Under, the production crew once again photographs actor Ian McDiarmid three years to the day after Episode I started shooting.
June 30, 2003 -- The first day of principal photography for Revenge of the Sith at Fox Studios Australia. The first scenes shot feature Hayden Christensen and Ewan McGregor as Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, respectively, along with R2-D2.
It has also been confirmed that Star Wars: Episode VII is set about 30 years after the events of Star Wars: Episode VI Return of the Jedi, and will star a trio of new young leads along with some very familiar faces. No further details on casting or plot are available at this time.

Star Wars: Episode VII will release in theaters on December 18, 2015.

I've been watching the Clone Wars series on Netflix. At first I was skeptical because it's a cartoon, but they managed to make Anakin much less whiny and the show is pretty brutal. It also makes the betrayal from the clones that much more meaningful because you see that the Jedi and the clones fought alongside each other for years.

I have too. How bad does your acting have to be to get out-acted by a cartoon character who can't even move most of his face?

That was one thing that TOTALLY sucked about the newer series.

There's a video on youtube (maybe someone posted it here? maybe I did? Don't remember) that showed one guys opinion of how 1-3 should've been done and it gave a much better story/plot.

Just casting Anakin would have gone miles in the right direction. I can't think of a worse actor than Hayden Christiansen. Just fucking horrible.

I just really don't like what Lucas had become. He was in love with CGI. He was in love with fucking up the classic trilogy. I'm so glad Disney took it away from him. It would be like if Da Vinci kept coming back to paint on the Mona Lisa. Just leave it alone.

The quickest way Disney could win the hearts and minds of Star Wars nerds would be to release the old movies unaltered on Blu Ray. I think there are some out of print expensive dvds, but the aspect ratio is fucked up.

Lucas probably burned all the old copies

Look up the Despecialized Editions by a guy named Harmy. He did an amazing job.

Disney should release the Holiday Special first.

I wonder who the new annoying character will be? In the first trilogy it was the Ewoks, and the second Jar Jar Binks.

Well, George Lucas is probably not really too involved so we should hopefully not get a lot of racially stereotypical aliens or Dubstep sith lords.

I checked a few episodes of the clone wars yesterday. seemed decent.

Watch the movie first if you haven't. It sets the stage. I had already seen a couple seasons before I saw the movie.

Also, they explain a lot of shit in the last couple seasons. It's worth the watch.

I was poking around and found this article. Apparently there's a new cartoon coming out called "Star Wars Rebels" which takes place after episode III but before episode IV. I'm pretty psyched. Can't wait to find out what happens before "A new Hope."

At this point, Filoni and his creative team have moved on to “Star Wars Rebels,” which is set to premiere in the fall and takes place in the time between “Revenge of the Sith” and “Star Wars: Episode IV — A New Hope.”

Of the differences between the two series, Filoni told Hero Complex last year: “’Rebels’ will be different from ‘The Clone Wars’ in a couple ways, and one is the decision to stick with one story and one main group of characters. We wanted fans to get to know the new characters and what they are fighting for. Each episode has its own unique story, while still fitting into the much larger picture of what is going on in the ‘Star Wars’ universe. ‘Rebels’ will tell the story of a group of characters — in this way it is more like the original trilogy which followed Han, Luke and Leia — where the prequels showed us the grand scale and political as well as personal.”

Fall 2014 apparently
