Notes: Blazers are currently 5-0 in summer league. Zach Collins has missed 1 game.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
One of the big hopes I have for this upcoming year is improved shooting and an improved defense, especially the latter. In particular, I'm hoping that additional rotation minutes by Collins and Baldwin catapult our defense into the top 5.
Collins and Baldwin Dominate Defensively (Positional FG% Comparison)
Ideally, they would be dominating defensively in summer league, but are they? One way to check is to look at the shooting percentages of the opposing starting PGs (who Baldwin starts out guarding, presumably) and starting PFs (for Collins).
Opposing starting PGs shooting percentage: 9/39 = 23.1%
Opposing starting PFs shooting percentage (not counting SAS game which Collins missed): 16/43 = 37.2%
It's likely that SL shooting percentages are lower than regular season percentages, but this feels like domination to me. It's not a shock that we're 5-0.
The Collins Effect (on Team Defense)
In the one game Collins missed, SAS shot 47%. In the 4 games Collins has played in: opponents shoot about 36%. Zach is tied for 3rd in Blocks at 3.3 per.
Baldwin Can Do Anything He Wants To
In the first game of SL, Baldwin showed that he could score at will, finishing the game shooting 9-13 (69.2%) and going for 20 points. There were questions, at least among s2, whether Baldwin was a "real" PG. From game 2 on, he focused on getting his teammates involved, showing his PG prowess. The result is that he is leading the league in assists (8.4/game). So, he can score when he wants to and he can get assists when he wants. How does he stack up to the other high assist men? WB4's FG% is 54% (after 5 games). The next 5 assist men's FG% are in order: 37%, 30%, 34%, 41%, and 38% (Trae Young). By this measure, he is clearly the best assist man in Vegas.
Baldwin Dominates Whole Teams
In the 5 SL games, Baldwin has played 130 minutes. In those minutes, we have outscored opponents by 89 points. On a per game basis, he is averaging 26 mpg and we are outscoring our opponents by 17.8 points in that time. One way to get a feel for what these numbers mean: For every 10 minutes Baldwin is in a game, we go on a 7-0 run.
Baldwin hasn't had a bad game yet. If this continues, only media bias will keep him from being the MVP of SL.
