You're conflating two different issues and using them to create a racist proposition. There probably would be less/no riots in Portland, but that's because LA is a much larger urban area. Such areas tend to engender more violence due to greater disparities in income level and more densely packed populations.

Larger urban areas also tend to be more racially mixed.

Just because larger urban areas tend to have two characteristics (greater violence, greater ethnic diversity) doesn't mean that one characteristic causes the other.

That's equivalent to saying that basketball players are tall and basketball players are also rich, therefore greater wealth leads to being taller.

You're talking about an isolated area of neighborhoods around the Staples center. LA being really big doesn't really have that much to do about it. Sure, there are more people but I don't think the same kind of reaction, even on a small scale will be the same.

Look at New Orleans during Katrina....is that a large "urban" area?

But yeah, I put this more on L*ker fans being low class trash than them being black/mexican. Its part of the L*ker culture...raider fans and dodger fans are generally the same way....and it is a stereotype of the "cholo" (read: MEXICAN) sport fan in LA. I would think that to be true. And that just offers further proof then that there would be a higher propensity of minorities that are affected by decades of poverty, and in turn are raising children differently than those that are better off.

It's amazing what people do socially and culturally to fit in, to survive. Some families find ways to get away from the pull of poverty. Some don't. Poverty, culture, environment makes the man, not skin color.

However, you have to take race into account in these situations. I mean, look at the last famous riots in the US, most have seemed predominantly black in terms of "perps". Its just that we are so conditioned to be so politically correct that we can no longer be honest with ourselves for risk of appearing racist. You can't go around and ignore the world around you as it is, make excuses and believe that everyone is intrisically good. stereotypes exist for a reason.

Regardless, there's a difference between students from a prestigious University, primarily from wealthier backgrounds, and those inner-city citizens that aren't from such rosy setting.
