It never was French. He's of German-Irish descent.

Ok. I didn't know the story behind it.

Colbert sometimes comedically claims his surname is French, but his mother's ancestry was Irish, and his father's ancestry was mostly Irish, with some German and English.[6][24][25] Originally, the name was pronounced /ˈkoʊlbərt/ in English; Stephen Colbert's father, James, wanted to pronounce the name /koʊlˈbɛər/, but maintained the /ˈkoʊlbərt/ pronunciation out of respect for his own father. He offered his children the option to pronounce the name whichever way they preferred.[16] Stephen started using /koʊlˈbɛər/ later in life when he transferred to Northwestern University, taking advantage of the opportunity to reinvent himself in a new place where no one knew him.[6] Stephen's brother Ed, an intellectual property attorney, retained /ˈkoʊlbərt/; this was shown in a February 12, 2009, appearance on The Colbert Report, when his youngest brother asked him, "/ˈkoʊlbərt/ or /koʊlˈbɛər/?" Ed responded "/ˈkoʊlbərt/", to which Stephen jokingly replied, "See you in Hell".[26]

This routine, in which Colbert plays at conservatism in order to portray it as unendingly ugly, should be labeled for what it is: vile political blackface. When Colbert plays “Colbert,” it’s not mere mockery or satire or spoof. It’s something far nastier.

Blackface, which has an ugly history dating back to at least the fifteenth century according to historian John Strausbaugh, was used to portray demeaning and horrifying stereotypes of blacks. Such stereotypical imitation has not been limited to blacks, of course; actors tasked with playing stereotypical Jew Shylock often donned a fake nose and red wig, as did actors who were supposed to play Barabas in The Jew of Malta. Such stereotypical potrayals create a false sense of blacks, or Jews, or whomever becomes the target of such nastiness.

And this is precisely what Colbert does with regard to politics: he engages in Conservativeface. He needs no makeup or bulbous appendage to play a conservative – after all, conservatives come in every shape and size. Instead, he acts as though he is a conservative – an idiotic, racist, sexist, bigoted, brutal conservative. He out-Archie Bunkers Archie Bunker. His audience laughs and scoffs at brutal religious “Colbert” who wishes to persecute gays; they chortle at evil sexist “Colbert” who thinks men are victims of sexism. This is the purpose of Colbert’s routine. His show is about pure hatred for conservatives in the same way that blackface was about pure hatred of blacks. In order to justify their racism, racists had to create a false perception of blacks; in the same way, Colbert and his audience can justify their racism only by creating a false perception of conservatives.

While clearly over the top with its comparisons to racism, it's not incorrect. The whole point of the Colbert report is to ridicule conservatism by presenting a ridiculous caricature thereof. It's not unreasonable for those whose viewpoint is being derided to find it at least mildly offensive.

Of course, those people need a sense of humor.

The difference, of course, is that conservatives choose to think and behave as conservatives. If you are offended about the way somebody satirizes your views, maybe you should put on some big boy pants and grow up.

Black face is satirizing an entire race of people, regardless of how they think and behave.

That somebody would equate the two shows how out of touch they are with what racism is.

I didn't watch Letterman.

I didn't watch the Colbert Report.

This affects me 0%.

Ben Shapiro....who? This doesn't go as far as people comparing others to Hitler but if does make quite a leap. Conservatives shouldn't be offended if people call them conservatives, they should be offended if they act like the worst stereotypes of conservatives.

I guess people didn't all get Archie Bunker. That show used humor as a tool to show how stupid racism was. I remember one where Archie was mad how his hood was going to hell and God Forbid a black guy moved in.

Archie was mad until the guy came over and introduced himself as a policeman. Then Archie was ecstatic.

"Over the top" is an understatement for Ben Shapiro. Instead of complaining about how easy it is to parody people like him, he should moderate his writing to become less paradiable.

Imitation is the sincerest form of racism.
