Anyone else going to celebrate tomorrow that Stern is officially retired? Personally, I can't stand that smug little man.

I'd celebrate if they weren't promoting his errand boy.

I don't have a feel for Silver yet, so let me revel in it while I can. You'd have thought that Stern invented basketball, the NBA, Larry, Magic, Jordan, Lebron, the cross over dribble, television, and the NBA on television, by the size of his smugness.

Hahahaha

The guy created the modern NBA. He took a dying, drug-infested league with tape-delayed Finals and created a global sport, billion dollar franchises, multi-million dollar athletes, and a marketing behemoth. He has every reason to be smug.

At least the Blazers won in that old league.

I don't understand why Stern gets so much credit from some people and so much blame from others. He's a spokesmen for the owners, he has no power himself he only does the bidding of what his bosses want done.

The league was at least as fun before him as now. Brilliant lawyer Larry O'Brien exceeded all expectations in merging the ABA and NBA without a hitch. The political 70s finally hit ratings for a couple of years, big deal. That was over by the time he started. Games were not tape-delayed by then.

Stern changed the tone of the league into reward (more money for players and owners) & punishment (much bigger and far more frequent fines, and establishment of the referee class, à la police state).

Players used to argue with referees, and push other players more. Fans saw it as entertainment, but Stern saw it as threatening the moral fabric of the league.

I am sure as a big f u the Lakers already have the first overall pick

Under Stern the NBA went from a league where a franchise like the Portland Trail Blazers could win a championship, to a league where the NBA referees under Stern's direction would do whatever it took, no matter how obvious the corruption, to ensure that the Blazers and Kings would not be allowed to defeat the chosen one's. Good riddance.

Mark Cuban would be a perfect fit!! His track record speaks for itself. The NBA really does need more Mark Cubans.

He did some really good things - making the game global, marketing, putting on shows - I mean, who watches the baseball draft? Getting a women's league going. But especially in recent years he's been increasingly petty with fines for anyone who peeps and referees that could most politely be called inconsistent. I guess, like any leader, we will see how history judges him.

Been listening to a lot of coaches, GMs and players opinion of Stern and they all say good things about him, many praise him.

Anyone got any quotes from ex-NBA players or GMs that say anything negative about him?

any commissioner that acts like a heel in the WWE is ok in my book. At least he's not some dumbass sherriff like Goodell

Well, their salaries increased by a factor of 20, so of course they have good things to say about him!

Seems to me like the title of this thread should be "Stern's stern (finally)".

I mean, c'mon, sometimes you just have to use a pun when it's there for the taking.

Stern made the league (and himself no doubt) a lot of money. If that's your only criteria for "good", then there it is.
