turns out, the Sturgis Rally this year is starting to look like a massive super-spreader even....as predicted

EhNWqB_UwAE_pwA

******************************************************

* " Large in-person gatherings without social distancing and with individuals who have traveled outside the local area are classified as the “highest risk” for COVID-19 spread by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Between August 7 and August 16, 2020, nearly 500,000 motorcycle enthusiasts converged on Sturgis, South Dakota for its annual motorcycle rally. Large crowds, coupled with minimal mask-wearing and social distancing by attendees, raised concerns that this event could serve as a COVID-19 “super-spreader.” This study is the first to explore the impact of this event on social distancing and the spread of COVID-19.

First, using anonymized cell phone data from SafeGraph, Inc. we document that (i) smartphone pings from non-residents, and (ii) foot traffic at restaurants and bars, retail establishments, entertainment venues, hotels and campgrounds each rose substantially in the census block groups hosting Sturgis rally events. Stay-at-home behavior among local residents, as measured by median hours spent at home, fell.

Second, using data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and a synthetic control approach, we show that by September 2, a month following the onset of the Rally, COVID-19 cases increased by approximately 6 to 7 cases per 1,000 population in its home county of Meade. Finally, difference-in-differences (dose response) estimates show that following the Sturgis event, counties that contributed the highest inflows of rally attendees experienced a 7.0 to 12.5 percent increase in COVID-19 cases relative to counties that did not contribute inflows.

Descriptive evidence suggests these effects may be muted in states with stricter mitigation policies (i.e., restrictions on bar/restaurant openings, mask-wearing mandates). We conclude that the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally generated public health costs of approximately $12.2 billion

Covid is non-transmissible as long as you’re “protesting” though, right?

Thousands protesting in 48 of the 50 largest cities and I haven’t seen the armchair Covid experts say shit. This is the battle they choose?

BLM t-shirts seem to stop the spread of Covid, or at least cause people to completely ignore it while pointing the finger elsewhere.

Maybe wearing masks really does help

Multiple studies have showed that the protests have been largely safe, for two main reasons:

1. People have worn masks for the most part.
2. People protest in a singular market and aren't transmitting the virus across multiple states.

.

there isn't any real evidence the protests cause any surges though:

and maybe the opposite:

https://coloradosun.com/2020/06/30/police-protests-coronavirus-spread/

for damn sure, with the trump campaign and fox news desperate to discredit the protests and the left in any way possible, we know that if there was any evidence out there that the protests caused spikes or surges it would be all over the news. But nada

personally, I think it's certain that some people got Covid from attending protests. The question is would that same number of people contracted Covid if there were no protests? The evidence suggests yes

Maybe. Too bad the “experts” can’t even come to a determination on that.
They have, but you and the GOP, and our idiot president have chosen to ignore it.
https://files.fast.ai/papers/masks_lit_review.pdf

Check the date on that : April 1o, 2020.

The available evidence suggests that near-universal adoption of non-medical masks when out in public, in combination with complementary public health measures could successfully reduce effective-R to below 1.0, thereby stopping community spread. Economic analysis suggests that the impact of mask wearing could be thousands of US dollars saved per person per mask (93).

Interventions to reduce COVID-19 spread should be prioritized in order of their expected multiple on effective R divided by their cost. By this criterion experimentation with and deployment of universal masks look particularly promising. When used in conjunction with widespread testing, contact tracing, quarantining of anyone that may be infected, hand washing, and physical distancing, face masks are a valuable tool to reduce community transmission. All of these measures, through their effect on R0, have the potential to reduce the period of lockdown required. As governments talk about relaxing lockdowns, keeping transmissions low enough to preserve health care capacity will be critical until a vaccine can be developed. Mask wearing may be critical to preventing a second wave of infections from overwhelming the health care system – further research is urgently needed here

Also, it is a sad fucking state of affairs that this scientific review has a whole section dedicated to sociological concerns about the stigma against mask wearers.

At what point to reevaluate? Take a half step back, away from politics and whatever else is guiding that dinghy you're floating in, and just ponder the conspiratorial absurdity and phenomenal coordination it would take to form the world as you describe it. You're drowning yourself in your snark, brother. You can still hate who you want and love who you want, but data should be common ground for all of us. Show me the data that something I believe is false, and you know what? I will believe it is false. It's what we call "learning."

Did they get there vote in for Trump before they got sick? Maybe they can vote twice if they find out their vote hasn't been counted yet?

Ok, to all the people who responded:

You won’t convince me that people assembling in the streets isn’t a cause for concern while simultaneously bitching about Sturgis, I’m sorry. I have no problem with people wearing masks, and they may be effective in preventing some transmission, but they aren’t effective enough to completely disregard an entire block of the country packing themselves into city blocks shoulder to shoulder. I don’t care what any “studies” say, they’ve been changing their tune constantly through this whole debacle anyway.

Masks or protesters or politics aside, what I really have a problem with here is the double standard and hypocrisy. It’s insane to think a political rally vs. a biker rally are two COMPLETELY different things in the basic context of assembly.

Bitch about it all or quit you’re bitching.

You admit yourself you don't care what studies say, and that you can't be convinced of something, so why look for an answer? You won't accept any of the replies, so just live in your own bubble of truth.

I can find “studies” on either side. Doctors or virologists saying different things from one another. Studies aren’t scientific fact either btw, they are just studies with multiple different controls and variables. Most aren’t even 75% conclusive.

And I’m not ‘searching for an answer’. I’m over this bullshit and have been for awhile. Wear a mask and hide the old folks, fine by me. Getting tired of watching young people’s prospects get stolen away at the threat of a disease that primarily kills people who are above the average life expectancy to begin with. Getting tired of corny ass commercials and clown ass politicians posturing in masks.

Well, if there is one thing scientists all agree upon, it's that the virus goes away when we get tired of thinking about it.

Weird that people from all over the world still want come here. I bet people from Mexico are laughing their way right over the border at what a joke we are.

Weird that people feel inclined to vote for trump after constantly being called morons by Democrats. Glad to see your party has more to offer than smug insults and condescension this time around.

There is indeed a strong correlation between self-harm and cyberbullying.

When mean democrats call you a moron, you need to say to yourself "I'm good enough, I'm smart enough, and doggone it, people like me!"

Then you won't feel like you have to vote for Trump.

And it's weird that people feel inclined to not vote for Republicans after years of being told they hate America, they're communist, they hate the flag, the troops, hate god, hate christian values, hate marriage, are posing a war on marriage, are posing war on god, are posing a war on America, are posing a war on christmas, are a "libtard", a snowflake, a "SJW", by Republicans.

You can try to explain in words of one syllable and Trumpers stick their thumbs in their ears and shout nyah nyah nyah fake news.

I am stubborn.

While hundreds of thousands did participate in Black Lives Matter protests, not all in same place at same time. Sturgis rally were all in same place at same time.

Protesters mostly wore masks. Sturgis participants gloried in not wearing masks.

Black Lives Matter protests were outdoors. Sturgis rally was outdoors but participants also packed hotels, restaurants, and bars and exchanged bodily fluids in close contact.

That is why protests did not have significant impact on Corona virus cases while Sturgis rally became super spreader event.

Being a Trumper does not give immunity. Saying the pandemic is a hoax does not give immunity.

Because of mindsets like this, we are the laughing stock.

I have to say its hatred like what you display here that oushes swing voters away.
Why will you not listen to that??

you dont want Trump in the house, why wouldnt you listen to swing voters and how they say you can win them over? Instead you just demean and condemn them and you onow what? It had the opposite wffect of what you want.

what will it take to get you to understand that?

small sentences and one syllable words???

Your better than thou mindset is what the world hates.
