Summer League Grades (1 Viewer)

I guess it's not a great spot to be in on a BLAZER BOARD defending a current member of the Blazer roster, and one who shot the 3 better than anybody else on the team last season, or for the last how many seasons?

Notice I'm not the one bashing any current Blazer in any thread. That makes me a troll and making it all about me these days.

Babbitt was last year, and will be again this year, a Blazer. If the entire next season is spent arguing about Luke Babbitt's 15 mpg off the bench, I'm outta here.

Oh, and Mike,

IT'S GREAT TO SEE YOU POSTING AGAIN. MY GIRLS HAVE ENJOYED YOUR TICKETS WITH ME 4 TIMES NOW OVER THE LAST TWO SEASONS.

I always tell that nice woman who looks over section 207 that we're friends of you, and how my girls love the seats!

Chris Haynes grades:
Lillard: A+
Leonard: B (Jaynes agrees)
Barton: C
Babbitt: C (Jaynes says D)
Smith: A (Jaynes says I/B)

+/- as a stat for 5 summer league games is just ...

sorry, words fail.

I think it is fair to judge Babbitt differently than the other players because he's going into his third year. I think I have defended him more than anyone on this board, even when he was afraid of his own shadow and playing horribly. I expected more from him in Vegas. I was hoping the D-League All Star Luke Babbitt would show up to Summer League, but he only played OK. The last game he played was pretty damn good actually. He dribbled into traffic successfully and got to the rim a few times. I was most happy with his six assists, Luke darting the ball all over the place! I still believe in him.

Lillard A++
Leonard A
Barton B
Luke C+

NOW this is a useless thread

and babbitt is going to be an all star, just like yi

babbitt can be a steve novak type, but if steve novak isnt making shots, steve novak FUCKING SUCKS

he is going to FUCKING SUCK some games, and some games he will be useful

Perhaps, but with so many other guys at least as deserving of PT, he's not going to have a very long leash.

My guess is that Babbitt is traded by mid-season and probably out of the league and playing in the ACB by next year.

I guess he's still in the NBA in 2012-13.

$100?

A grade of D seems right for Babbitt

It's his 3rd year and he's still not distancing himself from scrubs. He shot the ball like shit (38% FG, 29% on 3's) and it didn't look like he showed anything new in his game.

Crappy.

You're almost certainly right that he'll still be in the NBA actually ... I should have said "probably should be in the ACB the next year"

2013-14 Babbitt is still in the NBA.

$100

Deal?

I'm just really disappointed with Babbitt. Year three entering the league, he's actually played against real NBA players before, he's got a nice outside shot, he's not a midget for a stretch 4. But he basically looked like the exact same player that left Nevada.

Team: A
Lillard, Leonard, Nolan Smith, and possibly Babbitt are rotation players. When you have that many rotation players on your team, your team better do a lot of winning, and they did (4-1). I think that the team figured out that Smith can be a rotation player and that Babbitt should not be a rotation player.

Lillard: A
Whenever he had a problem, he fixed it. Shot poorly the first half of game 1, shot well for the rest of summer league. 7 turnovers in on game, only 2 a game after that. Completely erased doubts about level of play. Someone pointed out the VSL is basically a college all-star game and he proved he can dominate college all-stars. None of the players picked above him can say that, but not all of them were given a chance.

Leonard: B
I am discounting game 2 where he was ill. He was who we thought he was :) Obvious flaws in his game, some of them are easy to fix, others are harder - but they are all fixable. So, it may take some time.

Barton: B
Improved every game. It was probably a matter of his comfort level increasing every game. High ceiling, high variance - hard to figure out how good he'll be in 2 to 3 years, but it could be very good. Scored 27 points on 17 shots in the last game which was impressive because they didn't just pass him the ball and say "make plays." There was a lot of passing. Tired of people mentioning that he was drafted in the 2nd round, he probably should have been draft at around 20.

Babbitt: C-
Can't defend college all-stars. They tried to play Babbitt in the high post in an attempt to expand his game a bit and it didn't really work out. Missed many open 3s. It's understandable to miss a lot of contested shots, but if he wants to make it in the league he has to his more than half of this open shots because he's giving up so much on the other end.

Nolan Smith: A/B/I
Didn't play enough really for an adequate analysis. As a shooting guard, his grade is an A shooting well over 50% and around 25 PPG for 1.5 games. As a PG, he showed he was competent but it's clearly not his strength, which at 6'2" it needs to be. However, after losing confidence last season and now showing much, he definitely showed he's an NBA player.

Others: B
Bost, Ibekwe, and others showed that they've got some NBA game and if injuries or a massive trade happens they'd be fine. Bost showed he could run the point and hit the 3. Ibekwe is a sad story just missing out as the last cut in training camp a couple of times, and now he's getting older.

Good post. I pretty much agree.

Babbitt HAS to hit his perimeter shots or else he's going to be useless (or worse).

Ed O.

he shot 43% from 3 last year, and has deep range. Even if he can't do anything else (which I can't exactly agree with) he'll get a contract somewhere after his rookie deal. I'd be willing to put money on it as well.

Well, my post backfired pretty badly. Although I'm pretty sure the outcome would have been the same had I not posted it.

I can't speak for others, but my grades for this summer league were based largely on expectations. I had high expectations for some players, and lower expectations for Smith and Babbitt. Smith exceeded those expectations, while Babbitt confirmed my doubts about him.

Didn't I just say he'll almost certainly be in the NBA? Why would take a sucker's bet like that with no odds?

So you're saying the Blazers will pick up his 4th-year option, and you have no problem with them doing so.

$100 they pick it up. Put up or shut up about Babbitt as a Blazer or picked up for his 4th season. The Blazers don't have to exercise their option for a 4th season. I'm willing to bet $100 that they will exercise that option, since Babbitt can shoot at an elite NBA level, and will do so again this season when given the chance.
