Chief Justice John Roberts said:
The student must be treated based on his or her experiences as an individual—not on the basis of race. Many universities have for too long done just the opposite. And in doing so, they have concluded, wrongly, that the touchstone of an individual’s identity is not challenges bested, skills built, or lessons learned but the color of their skin. Our constitutional history does not tolerate that choice.

In other words, favor white males from wealthy families

Actually it was Asian-Americans who were suing about this kind of thing.

Harvard University admitted a record number of Asian American students to its class of 2027, a move experts are wary of celebrating given the drop in admissions of most other minority groups. It comes as the Supreme Court continues deliberations on a lawsuit brought against Harvard by a right-wing group that alleges race-conscious admissions discriminate against white and Asian students.

In a breakdown of the incoming class released by the university last week, Harvard revealed that 29.9% of admitted applicants are Asian American. It’s a 2.1% jump from last year’s number.

“It’s been part of a long-term trend,” admissions Dean William R. Fitzsimmons told The Harvard Crimson. “The percentages have been going up steadily. It’s not a surprise.”

This is heading backwards to the days when white wealthy kids would go to college and become legislators and politicians that would in turn start wars and send minorities to fight them, being in their minds, expendables. Make college tuition too expensive for anyone from the working class. Dismantling civil rights is happening within the Republican party and it needs to stop. Classism is like crack to the right wing capitalists.

TY.

When they rule legacy admissions are unfair I might believe they care about justice.

Has anyone sued about that yet? They can't really rule on something that doesn't come their way.

"Use of Legacy Preferences Is Widespread, But Decreasing"

"The current scope of legacy admissions is hard to determine precisely. According to a 2020 Wall Street Journal report, 56% of the nation’s top 250 institutions considered legacy in their admissions process. That’s a decline from 63% in 2004."

They didn't end affirmative action. They kept it for privileged white people. Legacies, children of donors. They still get preference.

The Extreme Court did make one exception. Military academies can still have affirmative action to bring in Black and Latinx people. OK to die, just not get an education.

White, Black, Asian, and Latino, all have legacy admissions. And military academy grads get a good education and seldom see actual infantry combat and they're typically people of great character.

The Extreme Court majority has declared themselves super legislators. Unelected and unaccountable. They can make or unmake any law based on their inclination. Not governed by law, Constitution, precedent, justice, ethics or any attempt to solve problems.

Disgraceful. If we can't get this under control it will be the downfall of our country.

I am a white male from a loving, upper middle class family that stressed education. That gave me an advantage in life, no doubt about it. Fuck this Supreme Court.

Great video!

The projections on rich white males on this seems odd. The two cases found that Harvard (private) and UNC Chapel Hill (public) discriminated on admissions based on race, and the Court rules that that's not allowed in the Constitution. I know that many don't like the reliance upon the Constitution, but it's the law.

I'd be more concerned about the fact that people who have been getting admitted by racial discrimination have not had the graduation success or student loan payback success that others have had, and that's not getting fixed by any of this particular projection.

Sorry, but that is way to simplistic. Ever since the Bakke decision back in the 80s, race has been "a factor" that may be considered, along with many other factors. No one got in "because of their race". Give me a break.

And if you don't think race is a factor in this country, you are not paying attention.

Race may be a factor in some cases, but not all, and certainly not as much as it used to be.. Problem is, it's not always easy to prove/disprove, one way or another.

Amy Coney Barrett's daughter was just accepted as a legacy at Notre Dame.

Forgive me if, after you questioned what Ahmed Arbery was doing jogging in an area when he was shot, I refuse to listen to ANYTHING at all you have to say about anything having to do with race.

I’m a bit confused by all this . Who does this help/harm?

SideNote: my daughter heads off to college in 3 weeks. One of the factors to her choosing the U of San Francisco was that it is top 5 most diverse campuses in the country. #1 a couple years ago. That’s important to us as a family.

Just wondering how this impacts that?

This is my hope. That we have enough people willing to support diversity that it's economic and social suicide to do otherwise.

If she is already accepted, it won't affect her at all.

Congrats btw, great accomplishment for her, and you as the parents! I used to live about a mile from USF. Great, vibrant neighborhood. Bet she loves it.

My two fave restaurants there are House of Nanking on Kearney for Chinese, and the best tacos in SF imo are at San Jose Taqueria on 24th and Mission. I still go there whenever I get to the City. Mmmmm.

You are forgiven.

On our visits there, we really loved the campus culture and the vibe.
