Agreed, a competition swimming pool seems pretty dumb.

I just think that area... being so boxed in by freeways and roads... is never going to be some place where people just go to hang out. For sporting events it can work... but community center? It will be a waste. Businesses couldn't survive there because no one goes there if there is not a sporting event... in part because you couldn't even see they were there... there was no parking... (or people didn't know they could park in the garage for free). I just think whatever they come up with other than a sporting stadium would be bound to fail. Would have been damn nice to have a new soccer stadium there... it just made so much sense.

Timbers should move out to the soccer field at Delta Park where the mexicans play or something and they should keep the Beavers playing at PGE Park.

When do the Beavers attendance reach 7500+ per game? Hah, I think not. The Timbers pull that every game and we just had 15,418 on Wednesday.

For those who say Portland is a minor league sports town, I'll respectfully disagree. The reason why the Blazers are a success and the Beavers have been on life support is that Portlanders are now demanding major league entertainment. Our Nielson numbers for Mariner and Seahawk games are far above the national norm. We also are willing to make the trip up to Seattle to support those teams in outsized numbers.

If you put an NFL or MLB team in Portland, every single game would be sold out. Our issue isn't fan support, it's that we no longer have the corporate base to finance the advertising and luxury box sections that contribute the lion's hare of the bottom line of modern pro sports these days.
