There are still questions that are unanswered in Terry Porter's mind these days.
He wonders why both times he became an NBA head coach, he was fired early into his contract, including last February, when the Phoenix Suns let him go just four months into his first season with a 28-23 record.

He doesn't understand how he could prepare so diligently, work so hard and care so much about his team and job, only to be told he is no longer wanted.

The same thing happened in Milwaukee, when he led the Bucks to the playoffs in his first season (2003-2004), but was fired the next season after injuries marred a 30-52 season.

"It's a tough pill to swallow," Porter said. "My whole career has been about working hard and you will have success. The coaching thing hasn't worked out that way, and so there have been a lot of questions in my mind as far as the whole coaching thing."

But while Porter wrestles with unanswered questions and mulls his professional future, the former Trail Blazers great is certain of this: He will take the next NBA season off and he will do it while living in Portland and watching his three kids become young adults.

"I've always loved Portland, and I always told my family that it would be a place we would go back to and settle down when it was the right time," Porter, 46, said. "We just felt like this is the right time."..............

Well, welcome home. I don't think Phoenix gave him a fair shot, but their whole franchise is collapsing anyway.

Does Clyde still have a house in town?

I'd love to have Porter with the Blazers. Either way, I'm glad he's a Portlander for now. Solid, solid man.

But I guess if he returned to Portland and accepted a position within the blazers organization he really wouldn't be "focusing on family".

Would he?

Actually, I seem to recall that when he was a Blazer player, Terry mentioned an interest in a career in broadcasting after his playing days were over. I think he may have even studied that in college. Anyway, he'd be a huge improvement over Michael Holton.

Antonio Harvey as well.

So we got Kersey back with the team, Duck was as well (RIP), Cliffy still lives in HIllsboro, now TP is back in town, taking somewhat of an ambassador role...now if only we could lure Clyde away from the dumb Rockets..fat chance :(
I love that old team and they seemed to love it here as well.

Clyde would be back if you offered him the President position.

The problem for Porter is he has been set up to fail every time he has coached. Terry is not a bad coach. The problem is, that coaches coming in are almost always put in a bad situation, and in some situations, are only being hired so they can be the fall guy for the GM. The GM almost always gets to fire one or two coaches before they get the axe themself. That has been the situation wherever he has been. The fall guy for a bad GM who isn't willing to take the blame for the mix of talent out on the floor.

Almost anyone would be an improvement over those two studio clowns. Porter has that lisp though, probably not best suited for broadcasting.

With Nate only taking one year contracts, is it only a matter of time before the TP Coaching the Blazers rumors start.

And if Nate leaves, there isn't a possible hire I would be more happy with then Porter.

Scared me a second. I thought you were saying Terry joined Focus on the Family!

Welcome back, TP. Take your time and decide what you want to do next.

We all return to Portland, don't we?

You could also have Terry work with Jerryd since both were combo-type guards. I think he'd be valuable as a mentor/coach type that doesn't have to travel with the team, and is with the guys at practices here when they're at home.

He got a raw deal from Phoenix, was brought to bring a defensive approach, and then was succumbed to players who don't want to play D and want to whine about it instead. Tough luck Suns, good luck being losers.

Porter's my favorite Blazer of all-time. Clutch as hell.

Clyde Terry and Jerome, Buck not necessarily in that order, are my favorite blazers of all time.

They all played the game the right way. And the played to the fans. They were geniuses at playing to and off the fans.

Loved them to death.

Funny how wealthy people only find time to "focus on the family" when they can't get a job anyway.

Focusing on their family should be their #1 priority 24/7 every day of their lives anyway if they're any kind of husband and father.

I'd have a lot more respect say as an example if Nate made that move right now when he'd be actually making a sacrifice. I remember Adelman doing the same thing as TP when he got canned. Dude was out of work anyway, so "focusing on the family" is simply an excuse for not being able to find a job. Not impressed in the least.

24/7? Don't you think some of that time should be spent on making some money to actually support your family? Terry put in work, now he's gonna chill with his family, what's the big deal?

I was truly convinced by reading the article that TP is doing his best to settle down his family properly, luckily he's got the funds to do so. .
