Why all these attacks? Why all against Asian people? Desperation due to the pandemic? They think Asian people are easy targets? Old people? Why aren't old people not of Asian descent being targeted? Not that they should be. Wondering why the focus on asians? I mean I get it has to do with racism, but the number of attacks is insane. Its not like its one dude perpetrating this. Its happening everywhere.

umfortunately, i think its a culture thing. In no way to i agree or disagree but i think it has alot to do with covid.
Many Americans aren't able to individualize and just lump all into one pot. So when a wet market is a suspect in the covid creation, Americans associate wet markets with asian culture and there you have it.
ignorant people seeing any Asian as part of the current problem.
Its pure lunacy. Its no different than condemning all republicans for Trump behavior or mannerisms.

Hmm.

You think it's because they blame asain people for covid because it started in China? Could be

Trump's "Kung Flu" and "Chynaa! Virus" bullshit didn't help.

I can't argue that those inflammatory and racist words haven't played a part. It doesn't seem to be magas doing this though, but black dudes. That would make more sense if it were his supporters doing these attacks. Maybe his influence reached further than his fan boys.

To an extent i do. The increase has coincided with the outbreak and Americans have a history of ignorantly lumping all together as a sum of an issue instead of digging deeper into the intricacies of things to differentiate and pinpoint the root of a problem.

No, its a bunch of ghetto thugs looking for easy people to assault and rob because they think they can get away with it. Its like the "knockout" game a few years back. No morals, nothing going for them, so they do this.

They probably hate asians though too, but they definitely aren't Trumpy bears.

This is more indicative of the lack of leadership in the police and DA's office in these areas, as well as a failure of the local government as a whole.

I very much agree with that bolded part. These fucks aren't redeemable. Complete psychopaths. I have more empathy for fuckups that rob or steal from people because they need money for a quick fix. These fucks just want to hurt people because they can.

Some people have no care for community, society and civility. Some people do not value money, only chaos. Some people cannot be reasoned with.

My dear Bruce Wayne, some people simply want to watch the world burn.

Really, you see no difference between racial bigotry and associating Republicans with the (at the time) de facto head of their own party? Okay.

Huh?

nooo thats not what i said. Nice try.
Im speaking of generalizing. Nothing more. Generalizing that all Chinese are responsible for covid is the same as saying all republicans are responsible for trumps behavior/ mannerisms.
And yes. Both are pure lunacy. Or inability to differentiate.

But that is what you said, and are saying again...

You're saying all generalizations are identical...in this case, racial bigotry (generalizing Asians) and associating Republicans with the President that their party produced.

While all Republicans aren't Trump, they all assume some responsibility for their leader (how much is debatable)...whereas, all Asians aren't responsible for wet markets or Covid-19. The two are entirely different.

how so? The ruler of China isn't responsible for allowing wet markets? Do not some citizens of China support their leader?

They are no different. Blaming all of the people for their respective leaders’ faults.

All Asians aren't Chinese or Chinese citizens...

In addition, you seem to not understand the difference between authoritarianism and representative democracy, in terms of how responsible you are for your leader...

and you continually forget or dismiss the fact that not all republicans voted or supported trump. It has nothing to do with how the two countries are governed. It has 100% to do with generalizing and lumping all into one sum and stapling a label on the package, when they have differences.

your stance is like the guy who says the getaway driver is not near as guilty as the robber.

not gonna go rounds and rounds with you nitpicking one sentence out of a post largely not a out the one sentence you focused on.
You have your view and i have mine....

Family of Thai immigrant, 84, says fatal attack ‘was driven by hate’

An 84-year-old immigrant from Thailand, Ratanapakdee had recently received the coronavirus vaccine and was walking in the Anza Vista neighborhood the morning of January 28 when a man ran across the street and violently shoved him to the ground in what San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudincalled “a horrific, senseless attack.”

Ratanapakdee never regained consciousness after the deadly assault, his daughter, Monthanus Ratanapakdee, recalled, fighting back tears. A police officer told her they found him on the street, and he sustained brain hemorrhaging.

“He never wake up again,” she said. “I never I see him again.”

Reports of hate have risen during the pandemic

Though rights groups don’t know the exact cause of the increase in violence against Asian Americans, a clear pattern of targeted hate has emerged in the year the pandemic has decimated US cities.

In fact, Stop AAPI (Asian American Pacific Islander) Hate has received more than 2,800 firsthand reports of anti-Asian hate across 47 states and Washington, DC, since March 19.

In Oakland’s Chinatown neighborhood, police said a man violently shoved three unsuspecting people on January 31, injuring a 91-year-old man, a 60-year-old man and a 55-year-old woman.

A 28-year-old man was charged with three counts of felony assault for the attacks, according to charging documents. The man was placed on a psychiatric hold February 1 for a separate incident in which he was again assaulting people, the documents state.

More than 20 assaults and robberies have been reported in Oakland, according to officials. In Portland, dozens of Asian-owned businesses have been vandalized in recent weeks.

Advocates attributed the rise of anti-Asian hate in the US in part to former President Donald Trump, who repeatedly referred to the coronavirus as the “China virus” and “kung flu” during the pandemic. In some reported hate incidents, perpetrators repeated the former President’s language.

Russell Jeung, a professor of Asian-American studies at San Francisco State University, said Trump’s rhetoric has had a lasting and disturbing impact. He decided to chronicle thousands of hate incidents on Stop AAPI Hate because US government agencies weren’t keeping track.

“We needed to document the racism directed towards Asians because mainstream society doesn’t believe that we face racism and we need us to document what was happening and we needed to identify the trends,” he said.

Jeung said racism and assaults have created “a climate of fear and anxiety” in many Asian American communities.

There is no uniform crime data on anti-Asian incidents connected to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, a Pew research study from last June found nearly a third of Asian Americans said they’d been subject to racist slurs or jokes since the pandemic began, while 26% said they feared someone might physically attack them.
My elderly wife has noticed no racism at all even from strangers who have all treated her with kindness. Maybe it's our side of town is more understanding.

Anti-Asian racism has always been around....my son was in 3rd grade his first year in public school here from Taiwan...he accidentally spoke Chinese to a classmate once and got bullied so bad he wouldn't go out in public with his mom anymore for awhile....he wanted to be seen with me ....he stopped speaking Chinese for many years....by the time he was in Jr High he was bigger and stronger than those bullies and a popular kid in school.....since Trump, my wife has had racial slurs taunted in her direction by rednecks driving by on her hikes.....she now carries bear spray wherever she goes.....I'm honestly really fed up with american racists feeling empowered.....this needs to change now. One S2 member told me years ago that my Asian wife immigrating to America was the problem with America and that she was coming here for the free welfare.....that guy still posts here.
That only happened to my wife once and it was before Trump. I slugged the perp.

I live in logging country Lanny...you live in upscale Portland....different demographic

I thought it was understood that most older Asian people are kung fu masters.
My wife is an elderly Asian and doesn't even know how to make a fist. She tucks her thumb inside her clenched fingers. She's never punched anyone in her life and never will.

I'd still slug the perp who dissed my wife even if he were a 6 foot 8 320 lb. muscular logger. He'd better be prepared.

Believe me, I was ready for it. I haven’t had a real street fight in over a decade, and never wanted one again (I’ve had real fights in competitions aplenty so why bother with street fights). If not for my wife calming me down a lot, I’d probably still be cracking a few chins.
I've got a wife who's saved my nose more than once.

Who is the bastard. He'll get an earful from me.

I don't put up with that shit.

didn't happen when I was around or he'd have dealt with me

If I had been around I'd have done the job myself and if you and I were both there then I'd have helped you.
