Thanks,

its not even that black people are more likely to get arrested for weed. they are more likely to go to jail. and if they go to jail, they are more likely to get harsher sentences. black people are disproportionately fucked by cops and judges in the vast majority of this country.
i wonder why there are so many repeat offenders if these guys are being locked up for so long?

Whenever America stops having privately owned, for profit prisons, we'll probably stop seeing so many people go to jail for such stupid shit. It's even leaked down into the juvenile system. Ever heard of cash for kids?
Aren't they the second highest spenders on lobbyists in the U.S, only Tobacco being a higher spender?

I'm not sure, but that wouldn't surprise me. I'd assume pharmaceutical companies would be up there too, gotta keep the war on drugs going.

Jesus please us, blue. Can you read? The graphs clearly show rate. By definition, percentage.

dviss, in the brief gap between high school and college, I visited my favorite cousin, at that time he lived about 40 miles away. We all got stoned and were driving around, stopped by cop because, he explained, driver going 45 in 25 mile zone and taillight out. Legit stop. Also, three boys and one girl in car looked odd. The boys all local, me not. I pointed to my cousin, said I'm visiting my cousin, he got that "tell me more funny stories" look. We had more pot in paper bag under back seat. And the cops saw it. And ignored it.

We were white middle class college bound kids whose parents would blow a gasket but also would get us good lawyers. We weren't worth it. The cop said slow down, get light fixed, driver yessir'ed about a million times. We were scared shitless but nothing more.

I don't have to ask you, would it have been different if were were urban black kids?

It has been different from me. 20 years ago I was in Eugene doing a show (Jesus has it been that long...?) and a cop was in the parking lot shining flashlights in cars. My 8th must've fell out of my pocket because it was sitting on the floor of driver's side. I didn't drive so it would've been on the driver if I didn't cop to it. Bottom line is that search was a violation of our 4th Amendment rights. Completely illegal. There was no probable cause to shine flashlights randomly in people's cars.

it's really simple. some people smoke in private and dont bother people. other people do retarded shit like smoke while driving so you're whole fucking car leaves a smelly trail for a patrolling cop to follow. not to mention itll be on a suspended license and no insurance on the vehicle.

then theres the people who get arrested for something stupid like PDC and instead of giving the cop the tiny bit of weed when most cops would probably say fuck it or at most give you a small ticket, they stick it in their sock and pick up a charge trying to sneak contraband into a jail when it's found during a simple pat search.

So black people aren't responsible weed smokers, they do dumb shit like hot box (white folk made that term up) cars and smoke in public...

That's GOTTA be the reason for the disparity in numbers....

How many black people have you gotten high with? Truly. Sounds like you're:
singling a people out based on race

You live in a fantasy land if you think a lawyer could've gotten your friends out of any of that. Jesus Christ.....

You weren't worth what? You think that cop was scared to charge you with crimes because you were white? And looked like your parents might get upset, and hire a lawyer?

Shockingly, white people get charged with crimes, and go to prison every single day. Even the ultra privileged middle class ones, whose parents might get upset about it.

Numbers don't lie. In some places is 10/1. Do some research before you spout.

I'm getting really fucking tired of you guys jumping in the cops eyes like you know what they are seeing and thinking. I'm simply tired of this shit. None of y'all are cops. I have two cousins that are police officers. One in Pendleton, the other is a Multnomah County Sherrif. Two other cousins that are fighting in our wars. One of them is an MP. I'm 100% sure I've had more police contact than any of you. I feel I have much more perspective than any of you unless you've done some type of police work. I have intimate conversations with my cousins all the time. What perspective do y'all have?

I'm so sick and tired of this crappy notion that most police officers are good people. I'm tired of that. Y'all say 99% of officers are good people but you don't know 99% of them.

I can shine lights randomly in people's cars and I'm not a cop so not sure how that would be illegal.

99 percent of the public isn't comprised of good people so that wouldn't make much sense.

YASSSSSSSS!!!

Exactly my point. The people who say that (and it's been said in here) are full of it.

See (and I'm talking to you folks who defend cops no matter what) you can't have it both ways.

You can't say that cops are regular people just like us and at the same time saying that 99% of them are good cops.

Which is why when I say cops are assholes I'm not picking on them. People are assholes.

I don't want people flashing lights in my car but anyone can do it in public.

I dont get high with anyone because i dont get high. Not doing illegal things is a great way to stay out of jail. If everyone adopted that attitude there would be no reason to debate why more of one race is in jail or not.

Instead the attitude is lets do illegal shit and then look for an excuse or claim to be treated unfairly when caught, instead of taking responsibility for our actions. Every race does it white people just cant claim the unfair treatment because that's not how racism works in america.

You don't know how racism works because you're not affected by it. Just go look at the stop-and-frisk numbers and you'll see the disparity. But you won't give a fuck about it or even acknowledge that it exists. You're still in denial. White people need to get out of denial. Notice it's only you all who don't acknowledge that racism exists systematically in America. 16 weeks doesn't take away your racism. They're normal people just like us remember?

It should be illegal. It's a violation of our 4th Amendment right. You cannot search a person's person, house, papers, and effects without a warrant or probable cause. There was no warrant nor any probable cause to search inside of someone's vehicle with a flashlight. What happened to me in Eugene 20 years ago was an illegal search. And I'm not sure why you're saying it's legal because it's not. And let's not forget slavery was legal. It was legal for Wallstreet to do what they did to us to create the Great Recession. Legal doesn't mean right but even in this situation I don't believe it's legal.

Lots of immoral things are legal. Porn for instance. Should broke 18 year old girls be taken advantage of because they need money for something? They can't drink alcohol but they can do that?

That search is totally legal by any measure if your car was in a public place. Courts have ruled that placing a tracking device on your car without a warrant is legal. If that is legal then shining a flashlight in a car's window is nothing.

What if cops get a tip that hookers are using a cul-de-sac for their business? No reason to go look in?

Cops can't sit outside a bar and wait for drunk drivers?

I'm not a cop lover but if all cops can do is wait for a call like firemen do...shit will get crazy.

I'm talking about I'm talking about the disparity in numbers when it comes to arrests for marijuana. Stay on topic.
Well you obviously have no clue what I was talking about. Stay on topic.

i just agree with mr freeman that to get over racism we need to stop bringing the shit up. racism exists, sure. some people are real scumbags about it. a few of those have probably made their way into law enforcement. but i refuse to believe that the entire law enforcement system is hell bent on locking away black people, no matter how many times you read "the new jim crow" if i told you to read some 911 truth books you'd write me off as a conspiracy theorist...

and i am affected by racism, im constantly told im racist because racism exists. i ignore it, because im not racist. i've seen shit in all colors and i've got friends i trust in all colors. what race they are has never affected my judgement.

You just summed up a microcosm in our country. This happens FAR too often and people need to wake up. The research is easy to find of you care enough to look.

First, stop applying your opinion to this. That simply needs to stop. Opinions aren't facts.

Second, like... Get some black friends... Really... Your posts wreaks of an opinion formed by the media's portrayal of us. There's so much amazing Blackness out there that no one ever gets to see because many would rather see us shuck and Jive and sing about sex.

Take a look. Whites 18-25 use it more.

The black/white marijuana arrest gap, in nine charts

June 4, 2013 at 12:41 PM

As you're probably aware, black Americans are arrested for marijuana possession far more frequently than whites. You may also know that there's not much evidence that black people consume marijuana with greater regularity than whites do.

But the extent of the disparity between the rate of arrest and the rate of use for white and black Americans may surprise you. The ACLU has an absurdly comprehensive new report tracking marijuana possession arrests for blacks and whites at the national, state and county level. Sure enough, they find that black and white people use marijuana at roughly the same rates:

imrs.php

In at least one year, the white usage rate was higher. The others, the black usage rate was higher, but in no year were results for the two races that different. For young people ages 18-25, the rates of use are higher for whites:

imrs.php

And more blacks say they've never used marijuana:

imrs.php

Of course, this doesn't translate to roughly equal arrest rates. Not even close:

imrs.php

And this is a uniform phenomenon. It's not that some states treat the races equally and others treat them really unequally. Only in Hawaii are the rates even close to equal, and that's biased by the fact that blacks make up only 1.6 percent of the population. In the state with the second-lowest disparity, Alaska, blacks are 1.6 times more likely to be arrested. In the state with the biggest, Iowa, blacks are 8.34 times more likely to be arrested. D.C. has the second biggest; in the District, blacks are 8.05 times more likely to be arrested.

Similarly, the vast majority of counties arrest blacks at a higher rate than whites, with some having a disparity of greater than 10 to 1:

And this includes a lot of urban areas that are highly populated and liberal-leaning. Cook County, Illinois, which includes Chicago, has one of the largest disparities of any county. So does New York County (Manhattan) and Kings County, N.Y. (Brooklyn):

How important is this? Well, while making up a quite small share of our prison population, marijuana possession charges make up nearly half of total drug arrests:

Obviously, being arrested without going to jail is a lot better than getting arrested and going to jail. But it's still a major nuisance, leading to fines, long hours of community service and thousands of dollars in legal fees.

The report does suggest that legal reforms, in particular decriminalization, is effective at reducing overall arrest rates. Massachusetts decriminalized the possession of small amounts of marijuana in 2009, and arrests dropped an enormous amount:

But interestingly, the racial disparity in arrests did not fall at all:

In 2008, the black arrest rate in Massachusetts was 3.41 times the white arrest rate. In 2009, it was 5.4 times the white arrest rate. Now, the importance of the disparity diminishes when overall arrests are falling that dramatically, and there's no reason to think that decriminalization caused the disparity to increase; in 2010, it fell back down to 3.81.

But it's hard to make the case that decriminalization made enforcement more equitable. Indeed, as Stanford med school Professor Keith Humphreys notes, the states that have legalized or decriminalized marijuana to date all have smaller-than-average black populations. That suggests that whatever benefits casual marijuana users have received from those policies have mainly accrued to white smokers.
@dviss1 just owned it with this post.

Of course they do. Everyone does. I think the biggest determining factor is the way a person is dressed. Nobody, including a cop, is going to look at a person dressed in slacks and wearing a tie, and say "that person looks like he's selling drugs" regardless of their skin color.

Real life example: one of my "friends" that's been selling drugs for over ten years, only dresses nice. And apparently it works.

Now if that same person was wearing sweatpants, Jordan's, an oversized white t-shirt, and a backwards hat. A cop would probably assume he's up to no good, regardless of skin color.

Real life example: most of my friends that have records.

Or if that person was wearing dirty clothing, and had track marks on his arms. A cop would think, "this guys a drug addict"

Real life example: my oldest brother. Our neighbors called the cops because our house got broken into, and when they showed up, all they tried to do was get my brother to admit he was a junkie. They didn't give a fuck that we didn't want them there, or that our house was broken into. They just kept saying, "where are the drugs? so if we search the house, we won't find drugs?" Obviously, we didn't let them in, and we didn't file a police report.

There's a lot of nerdy white kids that do drugs, but no one looks at a nerdy white kid and thinks "he's probably doing drugs/breaking the law" why? Because he looks like he drinks Monsters, and plays Halo for 16 hours a day.

Obviously, judging someone on how they're dressed isn't always the most appropriate route to go. If they're wearing all black and have a ski mask, sure, make assumptions.

That being said, I know there's a bunch of dumb ass cops that racially profile people as well. And it's because of what @dviss1 said.

They probably didn't grow up around black people, and all they "know" about black people is what they see on TV. So they see a music video of black people rapping about selling coke, then they see a black guy wearing a similar outfit in real life, and they're like "omg look! There's a drug dealer!"

The pants above the waist is perfectly legit. I hate that sooooooo bad. If children in elementary school want to talk about how it is ok to do that fine. Then everyone has to wear them the old way until the last person on Earth that was raised being offended by it dies.

Then it is fine. Say at least another 100 years just to be safe.
