if detroit wants nurk and if portland dont want to re-sign him, then of course hes gonna get traded for grant, its just common sense

And if Nurk does come back is it really gonna be on a deal that provides much team friendly value to the Blazers? He will want a raise, he has major injury history, at times motivational problems, and has been played off the floor in the playoffs when teams go small.

I love what Nurk brings when he's healthy and beasting. But I have a lot of doubt we will get that from Nurk in the future, and on a contract that makes sense.

I'd rather keep Nurk than get second round picks or such. But a FRP, or a player like Grant even with all his question marks might be worth it.
 
I think if the Blazers are trading for Grant it's in an effort to flip him for something they see as better. Simmons, perhaps, when Morey finds out he's not going to get what he wants and has to settle.

I have no evidence of this. Just the vibe I'm feeling.

Here would be the fun part. We trade for Grant, make some other moves that make us better, and Nurk decides he wants to come back to play with Dame on a much better team for the MLE.

Every move we have made indicates bringing back Nurk is a primary goal.

Nurk was super underpaid last time. And he's a Klutch guy now. I bet he goes for every penny he can get.... as he should.
 
If we use the TPE for Grant, keep in mind our tax implications of adding salary.

Currently we have 18.9 mil of space. If we were to take on Grant without sending back anything, we'd be right back in the tax.

If we simply shed NAW along with whatever other asset in addition to the TPE, we'd be OK.

Speculation, but given the hard on Cronin has for Grant, and the CJ deal, it’s the only one that makes sense. Detroit needs at least one first round pick, and we can’t trade any except for this one.

that would be a pass for me. Essentially turning Powell/CJ/Roco for Grant is a disastrous series of moves (even given the increased cap flexibility).

the pick at least provides hope of potentially landing a legit star.

Same, but look at this team. It’s stripped to the bones. I know Dame is “ok” with the process, but coming back next year with basically 4 NBA quality players…..would Dame be okay with that? Long term value of the pick is definitely higher, but we’re in a weird timeline.

I did not include Nurk because who knows what his status is. The picks I’m not expecting to be good contributors. Same with any free agent signing. Literally look at who we’ve been able to sign the last decade.

Portland has a max cap-room scenario, but it would have to cut Hart and renounce Jusuf Nurkić to make it happen. Doing all that just to watch Phoenix match a max offer sheet for Deandre Ayton seems to be a poor use of resources, and despite my frequent efforts to champion the coffee, quirkiness and bike lanes as well as the easy camaraderie of Jason Quick, free agents do not look at Portland as a destination.

The giant trade exception, however, gives Portland a different angle. If Lillard comes back healthy next year, how do you feel about a lineup of him, Simons, Nurkić, Hart, Nassir Little, two lottery picks and another player acquired via the trade exception?

Yes, there are some other scenarios in play here as well that can leverage Portland’s added flexibility (Jerami Grant? Ben Simmons?), but even the base-case scenario looks to be a much better state of affairs for Portland: A roster that is roughly as talented as the previous two years but much younger and far more flexible. If Plan A doesn’t work, they can still trade Lillard for a mint next year. Yes, these next two months will suck, but this past week was a huge win for the Blazers. They found the one team that didn’t place negative equity on McCollum’s deal and took them for all they could.

In the meantime, it’s tank season in the Rose City. Expect Lillard to sit out the rest of the season and Nurkić to be held out of games with any malady worse than a hangnail. Eric Bledsoe, who has missed the last two games with a “sore Achilles” after not appearing on a Clippers injury report all season, is a likely buyout candidate along with Satoranský. Instead, you’re gonna see all the Greg Brown and Louzada you can handle.

Alexander-Walker will get some run too and might be redeemable. I ragged on his shot selection above, but he showed 3-and-D attributes as a collegian and still occasionally whips left-handed passes to the weakside corner that catch you by surprise; then he gets rejected in the paint the next seven trips, but still … there is something there with him that might get unleashed by OK’ing a more strictly off-ball role as a true wing next to Lillard and Simons. At $5 million on the final year of his rookie deal next season, he’ll likely compete with the other recently acquired dart-throw (Keon Johnson) for rotation minutes next year.

Finish It

This team is toast, we need to just finish this. The smartest move at this point is to find the team most interested in Nurk (I think we could get Boucher's expiring, Achiuwa who is an interesting prospect and their lotto protected 2022 first). Then give Morey what he wants, fuck winning the pissing contest, just give the mother fucker what he wants but don't make it cheap Dame and McLemore for Simmons, Thybulle and there first rounder this year. If Morey wants to win that's what he'll have to give up.

This might ruin the tank. I think Ant, Hart, Thybulle, Simmons and Boucher with all of the young guys on the bench might just win enough to get us into the play in but probably not into the playoffs. At that point you would take our 10th-14th pick, let's say 7th-9th pick from NOLA if Zion doesn't come back too soon or injures himself again when he does and Sac starts winning a lot, the 20th-22nd pick from Toronto and maybe trade up for Chet. Chet will be a great weak side shot blocker who can defend the perimeter, a three point threat and just has a feel for the game... I don't think he's some kind of transcendent player, I actually don't think there are any sure fire superstars in this draft and that's why we should be able to get him for a mid lotto, late lotto and late first or maybe just the mid lotto and late lotto.

We go into next season with Ant, Thybulle, Nas, Simmons, Chet, NAW, Keon, Achiuwa, Ibou Dianko Badji with the Sixers first rounder, Tyus Jones with our cap space and Jarrett Culver with our MLE just take all of the young Grizzlies available, Didi and GB3 and then undrafted guys and GLeaguers filling out the roster for really low minimums... Trendon should be included in that mix.

I think that team is scary next year, it would make the playoffs and get some good experience and might get out of the first round. It's only going to get better from there.

He contradicts his take that we made good moves by saying we threw darts at young guys and have a long history of not signing free agents. He also makes no mention of the only worthwhile player we got in the deal, Josh Hart.

It’s almost like he thinks it was a shit trade but wants to buddy up with Cronin so he can get the scoop in the future like he did with Neil.

good read on his piece. i've long thought he was a biased hack. this only further confirms it.

but he did have a whole section on Hart with videos of plays that i just didn't copy/paste.

Note: Josh Hart is good
The nice thing about this trade is that it gives me an opportunity to talk about one of the hidden League Pass pleasures of this season — watching Josh Hart go full-speed-ahead with a rebound or outlet pass and somehow end up at the rim, regardless of the number of defenders in the way or their positioning between him and the destination.

Ignore the sad trombones defense from Indy above and just concentrate on the malicious intent from Hart. He does all the time; the second he gets a board, he is hell-bent for the rim.

Better yet, watch Hart here after a make running it down Boston’s throat. This was in the fourth quarter of a close-ish game, and he still broke through Jaylen Brown’s front door.

Hart isn’t for everyone — he’s a short wing who is inconsistent from the perimeter (32.3 percent career from 3), and he’s not as creative in the half court. But for a Portland team that’s had a weird low-energy malaise for most of the past three seasons, Hart is a much-needed shot of adrenaline who punches above his weight on the glass, competes on defense and provides just enough offense to be a viable threat.

With one of the league’s more creative contacts ($12 million non-guaranteed next year, followed by a $12 million mutual option the year after), there is a real argument as to whether you would rather have Hart at this price for the next two years or McCollum at his.

Sure, McCollum is a better player, but he costs almost three times as much and is four years older. Additionally, Hart’s contract gives Portland flexibility for some cap-room shenanigans in late June; we’ll talk more about that in a minute.

I think we were extremely lucky to get what we did for CJ. I see a lot of talk about how many draft picks NO had and how we should have got some. Why should NO care about how many draft picks they have? Should they just give them away? I'm pretty sure they knew Portland could not get a better offer....

Lillard and the team have made it clear they are re-building around him, they have some assets, hopefully it will go well. I think the big decision to be made yet is whether Nurk can be a center on a championship team.

I continue to think that Hart may have more value to the team than CJ did. Almost all his stats are certainly better and he brings more energy.
 
Boston is desperately looking to shed salary because they are about 3 mil above the tax line. We need to be on the phone with them trying to get some sort of compensation to take on Schroeder's contract with our 6.5 mil TPE.

This is how you build a war chest of assets to make a bigger move later on. Need to be opportunistic, but Cronin doesn't seem like he cares much about getting every last bit of value he can in this teardown.

Philly is also 6 million above. If they want to dump contracts into our TPE along with some second round picks or the like... do it!
