I think the TPE can only be used if you are over the cap. Some capologist needs to clarify please.
We ARE over the cap now.

If we don't use it by tomorrow, then yes, the order of operations would have to be to finish our extensions, get over the cap, then use the TPE. And we can try to find a use for it all the way til next year's deadline.

The only way we lose it is if we renounce in some effort to generate capspace this summer for a free agent.

All true, can confirm.

it looks to me that the plan is to re-sign simons & nurk and get power forward (i.e. grant), get dame lillard & little back and thats our starting five for the next season

1/2 would be contingent on each other, I assume? Even if, no way TOR takes Nurk/picks/filler for Siakam and Boucher.

3 is not a legal trade. Also we can't trade our 1st.

yes, 1 & 2 contingent upon each other

Simmons won’t land in Portland, I know :)

Simons hold is less than I'd expect his new contract so in theory you could push that back in the order.

"Potentially important"

I'd assume Miami has a trade coming where they ship out a first round pick.

If cap space is the plan, I would try to use it (or part of it) now to acquire an expiring contract from another team in exchange for additional minor draft compensation.

we don't have capspace now. We will on July 1 when the season turns over. And we have to be cognizant of not climbing back over the tax now if we simply added a player making 20 mil for our TPE.

I assume he meant use the TPE now and use cap space in the summer.

So this move now makes it cj and Nance for hart, Hughes, a first and 3 2nds. Hart and Nance are comparable value, IMO, so it's a 1st and 3 2nds for cj and a huge tpe. That's good value

Yes, but if we used the TPE, would be then be back over the Tax? If that is the case, then we would want to wait to use it where going into the Lux Tax next year isn't a 'repeater' issue.

If Lowe is correct this kind of makes me wonder IF they are trying to get involved in a Simmons trade OR more likely maybe try and get Grant from the Pistons but this is just me thinking out loud but kind of makes sense.

We could use the TPE to acquire a player then send a smaller contract (Winslow?) out so we still stay right under the tax.

Yeah, we're currently at about 16 million below the tax. For someone like Grant. We'd have to send back something as well to stay under

In a separate deal, right? We can't combine the TPE with a player, can we?

We wouldn't be combining the TPE and a player if the incoming player salary fit on its own into the TPE.

We can for example trade Winslow for Grant. It would be 2 trades from the Blazers point of view but 1 trade from Detroits.

We've been great at going after and getting 2nd round picks. I vaguely remember Olshey saying that it wasn't him, it was his staff. So, do any of you think it was JoCro, or am I remembering things incorrectly.

Yeah, use the TPE now before the deadline. Aren't we currently $15 million under the tax? You don't need to use ALL of the TPE, just save some other team some tax money by picking up their expiring $10-12 million dollar contract for an additional pick or two. Then said player expires at the end of the year and has no impact on summer or future plans, and we might have an additional asset or two, minor as they may be.

Probably means Miami actually isn't doing any other moves. They just did the trade to get under the tax but happened to free up their 2023 pick in the trade too.

MM won't like this; Hughes is from Syracuse!
  • Position: Wing
  • Height: 6-6
  • Weight: 215
  • School: Syracuse
The ACC’s leading scorer this season, Elijah Hughes averaged 19.0 points, 4.9 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks as a junior for the Orange.

He’s a player whose offensive approach seems built for the current NBA. Over half of his field-goal attempts in his two seasons at Syracuse were from three-point range. When you watch his highlight tape, it’s almost exclusively either three-point attempts or layups and dunks.

Despite just finishing his junior season, Hughes is already 22 years old. He began his college career at East Carolina and had to sit out a year before playing his last two seasons for Syracuse.

Strengths
Hughes has deep range on his three-point shot and can make them in a variety of ways. With the ball in his hands, he’ll pull up and rise over defenders. He’s excellent at hitting threes in transition, and is particularly adept at getting his defender off balance with a jab step and then stepping back to hit a three. He understands the value of passing up long two-point jumpers in favor of three-point shots.

He shot 35.0 percent from three-point range in his two seasons at Syracuse, which may not sound that impressive, but there was often a high degree of difficulty on those shots. If he shoots more open catch-and-shoot threes in the NBA, he has a chance to be an above average three-point shooter. Good free throw shooters often translate into good NBA three-point shooters, and Hughes shot 81.3 percent from the charity stripe this season.

He’s also an excellent cutter, which led to a bunch of easy dunks in Syracuse’s system. He knows how to read his defender and when to make back door cuts. He’s also good in transition and threw down a lot of highlight-reel dunks.

On the defensive end of the floor, Hughes shows impressive timing on weak-side shot blocks. Averaging nearly a block per game is outstanding for a wing player.

Weaknesses
By necessity, Hughes often played point forward at Syracuse, a role that didn’t play to his strengths. He’s a decent passer but often made poor decisions, trying to force passes that weren’t there and committing needless turnovers. His ball handling skills are adequate for a wing, but at this stage he’s not the guy you want running pick-and-rolls in the NBA.

Here’s what I’d like to accomplish today or tomorrow:

1. trade Bledsoe for Siakam and include (2) second round picks

2. trade Nurkic (plus sweetener) for Boucher

3. acquire Simmons for our trade exception, our own 1st and New Orleans 1st and Josh Hart

Ant
Dame
Siakam
Simmons
Boucher

and we get this done before signing Dame’s extension and Ant’s.
Yeh, and I'd like to have a wife who loves sex!
