The 4 Coach Finalists Are... Envelope, PLease...

To me, if these are the final four I just give it to Canales.

Which sort of underscores for me just how much of a dog and pony show this whole coaching search really was.

When Olshey went overboard gushing about Kaleb during his introductory press conference, I'm guessing he realized that he had to do a little damage control. I guess it's still a remote possibility that KC isn't the man, but frankly, I'll be shocked.

Exactly... it's almost like a police lineup where everyone is morbidly obese and there's one skinny guy and the witness is trying to identify the skinny guy. This sure seems like a stacked deck.

Who I want

1. Clifford
2. Turner
3. Canales
4. Stotts

Who I think will get it

Try to stay positive, Nancy, even when it's unrealistic. ;]

I'm going with the Mystery 5th Candidate!

I find them all unacceptable. And I'm not about to give this organization the feeling as a fan that they are. I expect way more. And as all Blazer fans should. Just because these are the four finalists doesn't mean I have to follow along, pick one and be happy about it.

Not going to happen.

Why expect the worst case scenario? I don't think it will be Caleb.

I don't think it's necessarily Olshey/Allen's fault those are the finalists. It seems to me the next coach will be asked to develop players at the expense of wins. I'm not surprised a lot of candidates would decide that's "not a good fit".

Clifford or Turner could be the next Thibodeau. None of us have the slightest clue.

I also like Mystery Candidate. He must certainly be awesome if we have to protect his identity. ;)

Mystery candidate = TP
Honestly, I'd be happy with that. He'd have to be a glutton for punishment to get himself into another tough coaching situation, but he's a Blazer for life in my book.

Maybe it's Rick Adelman. Let's buy him out. The Minny War is the most NBA fun I've had in a while.

Exactly. How many of the current coaches in the NBA did all of you want the day the guy was hired? I bet less than 5

I wanted McHale (or Adelman) to replace McMillan. Carlisle was hotly debated back then. Thibodaeau was also known on this board. Not a head coach but often lobbied for around these parts is Budenholzer.

Other than that, I have said repeatedly that I don't nor should I be expected to know who the next generation of great basketball minds toiling behind the scenes are. Not my job, but there are those who are paid well to know such things.

No Nate McMillan protege's please.

Kaleb's biggest downfall to me is that he has only learned under Nate.

That is my feeling as well. And it has nothing to do with Nate. I just think our head coach should be more well rounded and exposed to different basketball minds and philosophies. Not to say Kaleb doesn't have a good basketball mind himself, but at his age he lacks the experience of the others.

I was not aware of Elston Turner's coaching background. He intrigues me.

A little info on the most anonymous member of our final four--Steve Clifford--from a March 2011 Orlando Sentinel article:

Bio: Clifford has coached at the high school, college and pro levels. He was an assistant coach at Saint Anselm College, Fairfield University, Boston University, Siena and East Carolina and spent four years as the head coach at Adelphi University. In the pros, Clifford spent two seasons as an assistant coach with the New York Knicks and four seasons as an assistant coach with the Houston Rockets. He joined the Magic staff before the 2007-08 season.

What he does: Clifford charts fastbreak points and second-chance points by the Magic and their opponents. For instance, if the Magic are heading into a timeout and have given up too many fastbreak points, Clifford typically will aproach assistant coach Brendan Malone, who then may say something to Stan Van Gundy.

In his words: "You can't have everybody playing Joe Head Coach. That means chaos. It's very easy if you want to talk to players [during a game] and, to me, that can be just as counterproductive as productive. I'm a big believer that the majority of the things that you're going to do as a coaching staff you're going to do before the game starts. The players should be prepared [by the coaches]. Once the game starts, if you're saying, 'Hey, look, he can shoot 3s' or 'He drives left,' you haven't done your job."

Well hopefully he would see how Nate got fired; therefor what he did wasn't right for the organization.
Nate lasted 7 years. Longest tenured Blazers coach unless I'm mistaken.

Yes, Ramsay was longer. Nate was second, which is still a travesty
