I'm not a Pistons fan and don't keep track of them at all. However, I've noticed
that they've been losing.... a lot:

2-8 in their last 10
3-11 in their last 14

Last night they lost by 31 to the Jazz. Reggie Jackson was out, though.

They made the trade to get them into the playoffs. They're now 5.5 games behind the Heat who are in 8th.
538 says they have <1% chance to make the playoffs.

Griffin salary: $30 mil this year, $32 mil next, and goes up from there through 21-22.
Drummond salary: $24 mil this year, and goes up until 20-21 where he will earn $29 mil.
Jackson salary: $16 mil this year, then $17 mil, then $18 mil.

They gutted their team to get Grifin, and it has not paid off.

Stan VG was under a lot of pressure going into this season. I'd be surprised if he isn't canned in the offseason.
Too bad, I have a lot of respect for him, but the Griffin trade was franchise killing for them.

I wouldn't completely write them off over the next several years. Yes, this year is gone, but Griffin isn't a bad player and maybe just needs more time to bake.

Agreed.
They are stuck for the foreseeable future.

They don't have a decent guard. The Pistons need a good point guard and maybe then their bigs would actually be productive.

I don't think BG & AD are as talented as Boogie & AD.
But lots of people wrote off the Boogie + AD lineup. They were playing pretty well together before Boogie went down.
I don't think there is really any reason why BG + AD couldn't work in the East next year for at least 5-8 seed.

Proof again why being the coach and GM is a horrible idea. Griffin and Drummond could possibly work but SVG is not going to work wonders getting talent to fill the rest of the roster. A team simply cannot pay that much to bigs without being able to find quality talent on the cheap.

It does not surprise me. I've said it about two or three times already but gutting your roster to grab Griffin was a stupid decision. They basically took the same route Pelicans had last season with the acquisition of Cousins, i.e. tried to counter the small ball with two elite big men, only got a worse player who was a worse fit for them for a much higher price and coupled him with a worse player and a much worse supporting cast.

While it actually worked fine for Pelicans and I think they would have become very competitive in the playoffs if it wasn't for Boogie's injury, it was calling for a disaster in Detroit. Basketball has evolved and you cannot possibly expect a line up of two bigs and three back up quality guards and wings to compete.

Worst of all they are stuck with Griffin because his contract can't be absorbed by anyone else.

Sooooo freakin glad we didn't make a play for Blake. That salary along with his injuries could have set us back for years.
His salary alone made the question a non-starter as far as I'm concerned. Then there is his injury history, and his doucheyness, and yeah, just no.

WTF were the Pistons thinking?

Good lord, I just looked at the Piston's salary situation. I wasn't aware that their current payroll is higher than ours. Still not above the tax threshold, but skating by with an even thinner margin that POR. And for what? A 9th place finish in the Leastern Conference?

And it just keeps getting worse going forward. Blake's contract is just flat out hideous. Him and Drummond are going to be tying up about 60% of the cap for the next three seasons after this one. In today's game, you just can't have that much tied up in big men and hope to skate by with average, at best, wing players.

They have their own Myers Leonard in Jon Leuer, but at least Meyers is healthy. And, Reggie Jackson's contract, given that he's missed half their games, rivals Evan Turner's.

After looking at their cap situation, it pisses me off that they took Blake off LAC's hands. I'd much rather that franchise sinking contract had remained in Los Angeles. Doc was dumb enough to give him that contract. Stan was dumber still to take it off his hands. The folks that make the Game of Zones animated videos need to do a Dumb & Dumber parody featuring Doc and Stan as Lloyd and Harry. Maybe call it Dumber & Dumbest.

Stan, FiveThirtyEight.com gives the Pistons a less than 2% chance of making the playoffs. "So, you're telling me there's a chance!!!"

BNM

Don't worry, LAC is in good hands with Ballmer at the helm. He can captain any ship into the rocks.

Agree about Stan, but the Pistons were struggling pretty badly before they traded for Griffin.

I think the problem is they keep trying to build around Drummond and he's not that guy. But the Griffin trade was bad. Apart from the fact Griffin's contract is terrible and he's on the downslide, THEY TRADED BOBAN!

Oh, and Reggie Jackson is bad, too. Stan is obviously one of those coaches who just shouldn't be GM.

They went on a five or six game win streak after the trade and looked like they may never lose again. I lost track, but WTH happened??????

It was 4 wins, and the context is the key...

Memphis. They lose to everyone.
Miami. Respectable win.
Us. We always lose to teams with new players and/or coaches.
Nets. Woohoo.

The first two wins were by a total of 6 points. So, you can make a strong case for it being a combination of a soft spot in the schedule and the excitement of a new lead player, rather than much of an elevation in play.

Blake Griffin is this generation's Shareef Abdur Rahim. This generation's Harvey Grant.

God, I remember when the Blazers traded Wallace for him, Theo and Dan. I buried my head in the sand after that one.
