TUALATIN – When the
Trail Blazers acquired Robin Lopez last summer, he was seen as a big man who would come in and do the dirty work – fighting for rebounds, setting screens, contesting and blocking shots and so on.
But Lopez also has surprised many by providing Portland with something unexpected: scoring. Even coach Terry Stotts admits that Lopez is a more effective scorer than he thought he was getting.
“He’s a better midrange shooter than I expected, he’s a better finisher around the basket,” Stotts said. “His pursuit of the offensive rebounds isn’t something we’ve talked about or emphasized, but he’s been terrific at that all year. Free throw shooting has been very good.
“In many ways, he’s better than I expected.”
