The future of the music industry?

How will the music industry respond to so many people's illegal downloads? I know I've personally probably illegally downloaded 70+ albums and many people are the same. An acquaintance of mine heads the Universal Music Group's marketing branch and he says that they are probably going to try to stop making CDs for the most part within 5 years and that the other three major labels will probably do the same in favor of itunes like methods. How do you think the music industry will fare in the years to come?

I think many jobs will be lost and indie artists will boom (even more than they have already). People will continue to steal music.

Eventually they're gonna wipe out CDs and work everything electronically. That will make it tougher for CDs to be stolen.

I agree. With all the technology we have now CD's arent reliable sources as they use to be. Everyone is so into their iPods, Zunes, MP3, and even cell phones it is just way more convient to have it right there infront of us. I will expect a down fall of music sales in the next few years, hell it could have alreayd started.And I agree with Justice. Indie music is something I have gotten into. It's getting more popular each year

I also believe that tons of radio stations will either fold or change into a different type of radio. Pretty much the only ones that will exist will be NPR/talk/sports radio, mix stations (like Jack FM), country stations, latino stations, and a few rap stations. That's about it.

The thing is, the only reason that music gets downloaded illegally is because they're on CD's and people who are associated steal them and sell them to official ripping groups. If they aren't on CDs the people who are associated won't be able to steal them. Itunes is gonna be a power to reckon with 5-10 years from now and will have the power CD's had in the mid 90's.
