OT The Greatest Action Movie Of All Time (?)

For what I call an action movie I'd go with Bourne Identity and the first Mission Impossible movie....a lot of great action I put under superhero or fantasy or sci fi categories but I think the Bourne series is the best action because it's fight scenes aren't drawn out for dramatic effect...they are efficient. I also don't include comedy action either....also didn't factor in historical epics or westerns

Rumble in the Bronx and Rush Hour are good, but these are the classics:

Snake on the Eagle's Shadow
Drunken Master
Young Master
Dragon Lord
Project A
Project A 2
Police Story
Police Story 2
Meals on Wheels
Dragons Forever
Armour of God
Operation Condor
Miracles
Drunken Master 2
Ever seen thunderbolt?

Yeah. I like that one, but it didn't live up to its promise. It was kind of a mess, with lots of choppy editing because Jackie had to use a double due to an extremely tight shooting schedule. I remember hearing that the triads pressured him into appearing in Thunderbolt. Jackie has actually marched in anti triad protests in Hong Kong.

I think if you are looking for a Father in the Action Movie of the 80's, It's Walter Hill. Although his greatest effort is producing the Alien series, he directed one of the early prototypes for stylized-action of the time period in "The Warriors" and created the entire White Guy/Black Guy buddy cop films in "48 hours." I haven't seen an interview with major screenwriters who don't name check him as a major influence. The Aliens and Deadwood Series made him so much money that he doesn't direct anymore. But even his bad films are interesting.... well except maybe Streets of Fire.

Excellent list. I'm particularly partial to Young Master, Dragon Lord, both Project As, Dragons Forever and Meals on Wheels.
A couple of more silly ones not on your list: Twin Dragons (tagline: "Jackie Chan - together at last") and City Hunter (a movie version of a video game). Less excusable absence: Police Story 3: Supercop. Jackie meets Michelle Yeoh - awesome stunts. There's also a part 4 now which is decent too.
The best ones for me are the ones that feature the three buddies of Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao. They grew up together and have amazing rapport. They're all together in:
Project A, Meals on Wheels and Dragons Forever (the greatest Kung Fu Courtroom Comedy-Drama ever).

Of course, if you haven't seen Kung Fu Hustle, you haven't lived. I think Bill Murray called it the greatest film ever made, and he's not far wrong.

For me, it's not about non-stop action. It's about the plot, and how the plot is laid out in the movie. It's about the characters, their chemistry, and their development.

It's about so much more than just action, IMO.

With those conditions, my all time favorite action movie is Jeremiah Johnson.

Not only is this a great well told story, it is loosely based on a true story and the real Jeremiah Johnson. Many of the scenes are true.

My favorite scene is the “skin this grizz pilgrim".

That is one of the very few movies I watch again when it comes on one of the TV channels. Another like it is the Mountain Men,
Heston and Brian Keith.

John Wick 2?

Kick ass movie, but not the best. I've gotta say its a few steps up from its predecessor, but it could have been better. That said Keanu still has it at 50

The best part about that script is that 5 assassins with enough firepower to waste a concrete building drop their weapons to a skinny Segal with a 9mi. l

I am a fan of Segals earlier works before he got fat and his movies got really Shitty.

Above the law
Hard to Kill
Fire Down Below
Marked for Death
Under Seige
Out for Justice
I'm Deadly Ground

I'll watch those anyday

He got screwed in Executive Decision. Whoever wrote the script must have disliked the hell out of him. He was barely in the movie before he gets sucked out of a plane and dies

He actually was in Trenton NJ for the first Riverfest (a BBQ paradise) which featured great bands like "The Band" and Little Feat He subbed for the drummer in the band. We were amazed! He actually kept good tempo.

I'm gonna have to see that! Looks pretty good!

My favorite movie from the 70s (and I haven't seen many...) has to be "The Outlaw Josey Wales".

Wait...was the "Dirty Harry" franchise from the 70s? I love those. Only seen a couple of them, and the rest in bits and pieces though.

That has the best Clint Eastwood exchange that most people don't know:
"You a bounty hunter?"
"Man's got to earn a living."
"Dyin' ain't much of a living"

[Update: looked it up on YouTube:

But the '70s is pretty much the golden age of Hollywood movies. And I'm not even that much of a fan of the Godfathers.

Got like second-billing, though...

I vote for any Indiana Jones movie as it had great sequence, great music, suspense, humor and also stood up to the ultimate test of being a part of a great trilogy. thQUS5BT9B.jpg I think the movies had good taste as cursing was not necessary ................

I reaaaaallly dislike Temple of Doom and Crystal Skull. Loved Last Crusade.

Cheesy, but I can watch National Treasure every single time it comes on TBS.

I wasn't a big fan of the Temple of Doom, only because it was the only movie my aunt and uncle in Ukiah California had. So every time we visited when I was a child, it was all they could play for us kids.

I haven't seen the movie in years though.

Like you, I really like "National Treasure". Funny how it became such a classic almost instantly, while being hated by many at the same time.

On an unrelated note, I would like to suggest a brilliant adaptation of the story "Oliver Twist", which aired on BBC One in 2007 (aired in the US in 2009). Directed by Coky Giedroyc.

It is one of THE greatest things on screen that I have ever seen in my life; movie or television. Ever. Absolutely BRILLIANT acting all around in that show.

Tom Hardy played a brilliant psychopath with a violent temper in his role as Bill Sykes. He used his past as a drug addict and alcoholic to form the character, and he was utterly stunning.

I'm fucking serious...his character was downright terrifying.

Another stand-out performance in this film was actor Julian Rhind-Tutt as "Edward/Monks". Wanna talk about a scumbag character....he nailed it perfectly.

Anyways...if anyone wants to see it, it can be seen here:

I'm not sure if that is one of two parts....when it aired here in the States, it was a two-part series, IIRC. However, that episode is listed there as 2 hours and 53 minutes, so that's probably the entire show.

This is well worth watching. It's not an action film, but I was just thinking about it, and was suddenly struck with the urge to write about it. So there you go. Enjoy.
