But you saying he getting paid the minimum but getting played like he makes $10m could easily be pointed to as a player who is a net positive.

Not if he's being played over someone who is a better fit long term and would actually play both ends of the court..... someone like Little.

we likely disagree on this, but I think Stotts should be fired. 9 years is long enough; actually 6 years was long enough

but we may agree that Stotts gets too much blame for Portland's mediocrity, however above average that mediocrity is. Simply replacing Stotts will NOT make Portland a contender. Thinking otherwise is blind homerism....IMO of course

Portland has a poorly balanced roster; that's obvious. A well-balanced roster would not be down to the Nuggets right now. And the worst balance for Portland is between high level talent and role-playing talent. Portland does not have enough of the former.

We might disagree on the word "should", but in general I don't feel Stotts getting let go is a big deal, good or bad. My concern is that Olshey is able to hold on a couple more years using Stotts has the reason the team wasn't contending, and he'll get to a point where he's gone 10 years w/out adding a new all-star to the roster. That would be far more criminal in my opinion.

I hear you. I don't get the feeling Portland is thinking long term right now. Stotts certainly can't be thinking long term, with his job on the line.

We have no idea what this team is capable of. Especially Dame and CJ. Go watch that clip where Beverley talks about Dame and our shitty coaching. We have never seen Dame or CJ with a different coach. Their entire careers have been with Stotts. How can I really say what this team is capable of until we see what they can do in a new system? How do we know what kind of defense this team could play until we have a coach who understands defense?

Is this team a contender with a new coach? Probably not. I have never loved the Dame/CJ pairing. But again, we have no idea.
Would love a link to the Beverly video.
I totally believe you, but in this link, Bevs compliments Stotts.

Next Year's rotation if MKS are gone (and Powell is re-signed, and a vet point guard is signed):
Dame, CJ, Powell, RoCo, Nurk
vetPG, Ant, Nas, Rondae/DJJ*, Collins

*if DJJ opts in, DJJ, if not, re-sign Rondae

IMHO, this is easily a top 10 defensive team with a top 5 offense. Yes, that translates to WCF, which, for a small market team is a championship.

After Game 5, I am now convinced Stotts is 100% gone after this season. The magnitude of Dame’s performance put a national spotlight on Portland like never before. All the national sports shows talked about how Dame had no help and how ill-prepared the Blazers were to start such a pivotal game. I think Olshey will get rid of Stotts to deflect the attention from himself and he will be forced to make some difficult moves (moving CJ) knowing that he will be occupying the hot seat that Stotts vacated.

I agree.

If he doesn't make a serious move, like trading CJ, and we still suck..... he should be next.

Well there will be changes I think 50-50 Stotts will be back or not. If Jones opt-in I think he will be traded. Plus will pick what ever exception we have. Will CJ be gone only if olshey is not there I just believe as long olshey is there CJ will be there. Collins properly will sign qualifying for 2year contract with the 2nd year with a player option. Nurk contract will be quarentee but without any extension. Powell I think olshey will try to get him to opt-in on his contract but if he don't I think he he 70 percent chance someone will offer him something big and he will sign else where.

In theory, both Olshey and Stotts should go. In reality, it will most likely just be Stotts.

In theory, CJ should most likely be traded because it has been very obvious that the Dame/CJ pairing just isn't working. In REALITY I think Stotts will be the fall guy and the team will make some minor tweaks during the offseason and try things with a new coach.

For sure, these people need to be gone next year:
Stotts
Melo
Kanter

Hopefully Collins is healthy finally so we can see if he can fill that PF/C off the bench role.
I disagree about letting Kanter go. Even if he's been a liability this series, banking on Nurk and Collins as our only rotational bigs would be reckless given their injury history. Even if Kanter isn't a playoff-rotation player, he's fantastic to have for the grind of the regular season and a major insurance policy for Jusuf and Z. He accepts his role and is a great teammate. Also, he's likely going to be an affordable contract.

He almost has to move CJ. His hand is forced

One of the several problems Kanter shares with Melo is that he is a vet. If he's on the roster, most coaches will feel compelled to play them....

RoCo, Nurk, Collins, Harry will be fine. Besides, if CJ is traded, it'll most likely be for a big.

I agree. However, I think Kanter is just different. He's got a lot of self-awareness and he understands and accepts his role, whatever it may be. Even better, he'll do so with a smile on his face. I think that's why he's such a great teammate and great teams need players willing to sacrifice like that for the betterment of the team in the locker room.

Hopefully, yes, but as you point out, it may take more than a season to alter the "defense is optional" culture.
I don't believe this is the case, but that's the excuse I expect people to use, only to realize it was never the main issue. Its nearly the same cycle with every coach being an "idiot", the next guy comes in, there's some excitment, we give him a pass for a couple years, then he becomes an idiot.

If Blazers lose tonight I am thinking 90% odds Stotts is gone and maybe 66% for Olshey being gone

New GM, new coach, and the only guy I really care about coming back for sure is Dame. The rest of the roster is trade bait as far as I’m concerned.

Everyone should be on the table. Keep Powell if you can since you can pay him whatever. It would be nice to keep Nas but not required.

I wouldn’t mind giving Ainge a shot at GM. David Vanterpool deserves a shot as head coach. I’d sure give him serious consideration.

The next week to 10 days will be very telling on what happens with the franchise and the offseason even more......

1) Will Dame go to Olshey or Jody Allen and say please trade me or give the team a ultimatum of do something bold or trade me type thing
2) Will Stotts have a job ---- I respect Stotts in the sense i think he is a good coach when your looking to rebuild but he has not shown he can do much past that and after 9 years its time to move on.
3) Will NeO have a job -- I am more mixed on him but like Stotts i think he has done as much as he could and been average at best so again - -Time to move on
4) CJ and Nurk will either be on the roster when next season starts cause CJ for obvious reasons but Nurk is more interesting. i like Nurk but since that nasty injury he does not seem as aggressive to score and take it to the rim AKA play like a center

My solutions are these --- Fire Neo and Stotts

Bring in Coach K as President of Basketball operations or bring him in as a advisor
Find a rising name in the GM type area and hire him
Hire either Chauncey Billups or V-pool as HC
Then bring in a retread HC to help them be a HC

This would be a good start

My fear is that we will go full OKC. Decide we can't put enough talent around Dame to compete during his prime, so we just gather draft picks and hope lightning strikes.

Nurkic just said he doesn’t want to throw anybody under the bus.

says he doesn’t know what the future holds and isn’t sure if he’ll be back

yikes

How can you say it's not a sought after job IF Dame stays it will be so that is a silly statement by you Maxi
