The Jailblazers in Retrospect: It was never about character, it was about losing.

To me the Jailblazers era started with Dontonio Wingfield, J.R. Rider and Gary Trent.

that was the first "era".

That was when I first heard Jim Rome coin the term 'Jailblazer'. Then Damon's foil incident in Arizona and leaving the house wide open, with pot on the counter and the I-5 yellow Hummer incident. By 2000 it was just peaking.

Your memory is waaay off here. The three events you are talking about were *after* 2000.

Here are the dates for some issues regarding Blazer players. bolded are the ones you think were in 2000, when it "peaked".

22Feb02 Shawn Kemp, POR Violation of league drug policy, suspended 5 games

15May02 Damon Stoudamire, POR Arrested in Clackamas County, OR for possession of marijuana (the block of pot issue)

22Nov02 Damon Stoudamire, POR Arrested near Centralia, WA for marijuana possession. The Yellow Hummer incident.

22Nov02 Rasheed Wallace, POR Arrested near Centralia, WA for marijuana possession

29Mar03 Qyntel Woods, POR Arrested in Portland, OR for marijuana possession

7Jul03 Damon Stoudamire, POR Fined and suspended after being arrested for possession of marijuana. This is the tin foil incident

29Oct04 Qyntel Woods, POR Violation of league drug policy, suspended 5 games

That is 7 incidents in 2 and a half years, and I think at the end people were fed up.
Then the attitudes of Sheed and Bonzi kind of put a damper on the fans in about 2002-03 with the Bonzi flipping off the fans and Sheed throwing the towel in Sabas' face. I'd say the last phase was the Miles and Z-Bo days of about 2005-06.

Rasheed threw the towel in Sabonis' face in 2001.

Have you heard of this thing called google? You might want to try using it. ;)

Couple of lies there. Sheed yelled at Donaghy. He was a long distance away and did not make a run at him. Ruben didn't rape a nanny, and not while here. As a Sonic before he came here, he made a maid who was his own age do oral sex. He was never accused of rape.

Whatever, it was unnecessary for the Oregonian to demand day after day for years that a 50+ win team be blown up.

I'm sure she had it coming.

Doesn't that mean the team thought that fans value character? What screwed the team was having two of the three players they built around having serious ongoing injury problems.
true dat
I was fine with trading Zach, but I was upset that they didn't get anything for him.
a year and a half closer to hitting his prime Zach (+ Mardy Collins) was traded for Tim Thomas & Cuttino Mobley. While Portland didn't have Mardy Collins to sweeten the deal, would you have been satisfied with TT & a Mobley return in 2007? Memphis sure got it's kudos in the press for scooping him in 2009 for Quentin Richardson... is that the sort of return that would have satisfied you?

It's his contract year. While he's doing his thing this season, I'm guessing he ends up getting a lot less then his last sweetheart Nash deal. Dude is a solid low post scorer and rebounder, but he's also bad on D... both on his man and especially in defending the paint. Thats a pretty significant weakness for a Big. This was known throughout the league back when Portland was looking to dump him for suffering a few too many public faceplants. IMO fans overrate the market for their players and this would seem to be one of those times.

ZBOEC is huge right now. Plus, he was an allstar last season and he's arguably a better PF than Lamarcus Aldridge.

I know about google. I guess I just wasn't jumping for joy to gloat about being right when it comes to when the 'Jailblazer' era hit its peaks and valley's. I was just going off what I remember.

if we can't gloat and jump for joy on the internet, what's the point of being on the internet?!

You're saying that sure, we got nothing for Zach, but so did his next team, so that makes it okay that we gave away a future all-star. In other words, this is just hindsight years later. But even then, most Blazer fans expected to get more.

I said I WAS upset that they didn't get anything for him. I was talking about my position at the time of the trade. Yeah, there were two more trades that indicate that he probably wasn't worth as much as I thought. There's still the fact that he is an all star, and would seem to indicate that there were those that undervalued Zach, too.

I think I would have liked the TT/CM trade better than what we got. TT/CM > CF and eating perhaps the worst contract in the league, imo.

Go Blazers
