Thoughts on the (happily ending) Jody era of ownership?

She wasn't a great owner, but, to me, she was better than I thought she would be. She made upgrades to the arena, the Cronin hire turned out to be astute, the new owner she sold to seems like a great choice, and she didn't seem to hamstring the team with too many financial constraints.

I hate that she never talked to the press, but all in all, it could have been much worse.

What say you?

Do you guys realize she’s still 20% owner?
I have no idea, but I'm not following this. The Paul Allen Estate owns 100% of the Blazers. Jody Allen owns zero. As I understand it, the new ownership group is purchasing 100% of the Blazers. For Jody Allen to "own" 20%, she has to be part of the new ownership group, correct?

I heard a theory that makes sense but would need to dig deeper for verification.

In the sale of the team, its done in installments. So after a payment, they will have 20%... then after the final payment, they will have 0%.

That's how ive heard it explained. I have no idea if thats true so im passing it along with the knowledge it may not be true, i just havent dug deeper.

When people say Jody "owns" the Blazers they mean she was the governor with all ultimate management authority and complete decision making powers.

Super glad we're getting a new owner. I believe Jody was a bad owner. Primarily because she increased Bert Kolde power, and prioritized cash above the roster.

The investments you note were normal business things that actually can help the franchise increase in value. Those weren't Jody blowing money to help make the team competitive like paying luxury tax was. In fact Jody has a record of grabbing cash from draft picks with zero basketball benefit. Similar moves were made to save luxury tax at the expense of roster talent. Paul Allen never did those things - he did the opposite.

Jody might not be one of the worst owners ever like Glen Taylor or Donald Sterling were. But she was certainly worse than average. I'd put her in the bottom 10%, although I acknowledge much of that is subjective.

Happy this will change.

That seems right. She wasn't a Steve Ballmer (although that seemed a lot better last year before certain revelations) but she wasn't a Donald Sterling. Also, as billionaires go, she was pretty far down the evil scale (same with Paul Allen). Now, if a billionaire is buying themself a sports team for fun, then they're not exactly using their wealth for good, so it's pretty hard to have a billionaire owner who is actually a good person (and even if a billionaire fully intends to do good with their wealth, they're still arrogant enough to want to control the wealth rather than simply giving it away immediately), but she was basically a caretaker for our dead billionaire owner, so about as un-evil as it's possible to be.

Im confused as to how she "prioritized" cash above the roster.

Besides them giving Jerami Grant a HUGE extension no one else would've, they signed Damian Lillard to (at the time) one of the biggest extensions in league history, actually two extensions.

Also, lets not act like Paul Allen always spent money freely. Yes, he did at times, but he also wasn't exactly the boldest of owners when it came to taking risks (after Trader Bob).

I don’t get the hate for Jody. I think she did a good job given the situation.
And I also don’t understand why people bash her for not talking to the media. Paul was considered a great owner of both the Blazers & Seahawks and he rarely spoke to the media either. They both trusted the people they hired to run the business & teams sides of things, and let them speak to the media. Thank god they weren’t a Jerry Jones type owner.
