Starting their own league will never work. Players will start backing out soon as they realize they have to start putting up their own money to secure arenas, refs, game day staff, coaches, trainers, front office, day to day staff, etc. Then they will look for a backer... and... OOPS, we have owners again.
Sure you may be able to find a backer (owner) who will let the players keep the majority of the proceeds. But IF that league takes off, soon as the first CBA negotiations come up, it will all start over.
You have to remember, majority of players have a very small window of being able to make good money. They don't have the luxury to wait 5-10 years to see a positive return on their investment of a new league.
The most important part of all this. Owners were billionaires then bought basketball teams. Players are millionaires BECAUSE of the league. If there is no NBA, owners will still be billionaires.
