The coaches of each conference are directed to vote for two guards, three front-court players and two wild cards, meaning they can opt for as many as four guards as reserves. West coaches chose the maximum, so no gripes there.
A couple of suggestions. One, increase the All-Star Game roster sizes to 13. That’s how many players dress for regular NBA games now.
Two — and this by way of Lillard’s agent, the well-respected Aaron Goodwin — make transparent the votes of each of the coaches.
“They should make it public what the coaches’ votes were,” Goodwin offers.
Goodwin was told by a league source that three of the 14 West coaches left Lillard off their ballots.
“What three coaches could say Damian isn’t an All-Star?” Goodwin says. “I’d love for the public to see that.”
Fair enough. But if Lillard received votes from 11 of the 14 coaches, I’d guess that would be enough to get him a spot. I’m thinking more than three coaches left him off their ballots.
