I've pretty much had zero hope for trading him since I found out his bird rights didn't transfer. Why would a team want a guy that they will have no advantage in re-signing this summer? I think he would have already been dealt if his bird rights transferred.

Good point. Of course, many on this board will ignore that fact and blame Olshey if he isnt traded.

Portland's effort to find a first-round pick for J.J. Hickson "doesn't look good right now," league source says.

This reminds me a lot of desperately looking for a first for Crawford last season. My one concern, and I do want to preserve cap space, but there were rumors that we could have had Bledsoe for Crawford, but would have taken on more salary, Gomes? Can't reemember. And of course, that cut into our cap space. Could have all just been false rumors, but if we have the chance to move JJ for a talented young player, but it hurts a little of our cap space, I hope we'd take the young asset over a little more space.
Definitely. Preserving cap space at the cost of conducting a trade to acquire talent would be a boneheaded move. We're not going to dramatically improve our roster via free agency - it'll have to be done via trades. And even if we only have $8M in cap space that will still allow us to make lop-sided trades to our advantage.

Latest word out of Boston: Celtics making deadline-day run at player they've pursued before ... Tyreke Evans

Tom Penn is fucking awesome! Watching him work this trade machine on SportsCenter right now. Always loved this guys knowledge of the game.

I'm glad we didn't pull the trigger on Bledsoe for Crawford. The chain of events would probably have us not pick up Lillard.

#Blazers GM Neil Olshey told Nolan Smith Tuesday no deal was in the works. JJ Hickson isn't eager to waive Bird rights in trade. Quiet day?

No team will offer much for JJ Hickson. First, JJ gets to decide yes or no to the trade and won't approve if his PT goes down, thus lowering his value this summer. Second, with no bird-rights, teams don't have any advantage to re-sign Hickson and retain him long term. So, why not just sign him as a FA this summer and not waste assets.

Been saying this all season. But still people ignored it

I think at this point it makes sense to hang on to Hickson anyways and then sign and trade him in the summer (if a team wants to pay him too much) or resign him as a valuable bench sub at a decent contract.

Portland asking for a 1st round pick for JJ Hickson and finding no takers so far.

Telflair is available for a 2nd rounder it sounds like. Not sure of his contract (will edit this with the details after I look it up) but you could do worse off in the backup PG department (like Ronnie Price and Nolan Smith for example!)

Salary details: Last year of his deal. Making 1,567,500 MIL. We have that in cap space right now so technically wouldn't have to send out another player (would have to cut someone though).

Telfair is an upgrade over Rice and Smith 10 fold. That's not really saying much though.

I guess it depends on if the tank is really on. If it is then you wouldn't bother getting Telfair as it may give you 1 more win then you would have got with Nolan making mistakes.

I've always really liked Bassy. Super nice guy and not a bad player. He was drafted too high, but he's not a bad player.

I think it has more to do with the next season. Telfair would be a solid back-up PG/SG combo. That would allow management to concentrate on a starting center. Then if they couldn't find the volume scoring bench player via free agency; they can use Telfair or another player to grab one via trade.

I doubt Telfair would give us more wins because he isn't that scoring guard we are in search of.

Remember how quiet it was last year and then BOOM........ we made tons o moves? I know it's different because we have nothing to offer this season.

1st off Hickson isn't worth a 1st round pick, so I think if POR is holding out for that deal then they are wasting thier time, maybe they get lucky and a team gets desperate, but sure doesn't sound likely to occur.

Secondly, aren't Hickson's Bird Rights, over exaggerated? Like any team who traded for him is going to want to sign him to a 5 year deal instead of a 4 year deal? Is this the same guy that has been traded and waived and who no other team was willing to offer anything more than a 1year deal? JJ would be lucky to get a 3 year deal next year, let alone anything resembling a 5yr Bird Rights deal, him vetoing a deal to retain such rights seems a little ridiculous to me.

I think there are some young rotation players out there that make some sense for POR to pursue trading JJ for, especially if they cost less than JJ's potential cap hold next year or will be RFA\UFA this offseason.

Well the whole issue with "Bird Rights" isn't that the team can offer him more. It's more like a team over the cap can still resign him. Any team over cap trading for Hickson won't be able to resign him, even if they wanted to.

So this brings up a catch 22. The teams under cap that can afford to resign him would rather wait until free-agency to do it. That way they don't lose assets. Teams over cap can't resign him, so it's only a void.

The real advantage are teams over the luxury tax threshold. They can cut 4 million off their luxury penalty; which is $8 million.

But we don't get any bird rights with Telfair and he expires at the end of this year. So conversely if it is about next year (and it should be) then there is really not much of an incentive to trade for him for this year. We can sign him in the off-season if we want.

I think it would have more to do with trying him out and seeing if he actually fits. If he doesn't, then it really doesn't matter.

Not even if they had a mid level or bi-annual exception?
