Players, league can't agree on Monday meeting

The National Basketball Players Association requested a meeting with league negotiators for Monday before the first two weeks of the regular season are canceled and could not agree with NBA officials on the parameters, a union source told CBSSports.com.

NBA officials did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the information released by the union, which is now planning regional meetings Saturday in Miami and Monday in Los Angeles.

According to the union source, the league would agree to a meeting Monday -- the deadline set by commissioner David Stern for canceling the first two weeks of regular season games -- only if the players agreed beforehand to accept the NBA's offer of a 50-50 revenue split. The union declined, the source said.

NBA owners have preconditioned any resumption of talks on union accepting 50-50 split. Union refusing.

Union source says: "This just confirms what we suspected all along: The NBA was never serious about negotiating until guys missed checks."

RicBucher: An 11th-hour meeting between David Stern and Billy Hunter won't happen, according to a source. Details coming on you-know-where.

They're nothing [both sides!] without the fans and we're the ones getting the shaft here.

Fuck you Carmelo Anthony!

(I feel better when I place blame on a player I loath ;) )

So if the season is shorted to 50 games (Jan - mid April) do the players get less of their salary because of a shorted season based upon their original contracts?

Union crew sans Hunter to meet players in MIA Sat while he's off to LA to meet w/players on Mon after NBA refuses meeting w/o 50-50 BRIsplit

WojYahooNBA..........

Stern didn't have immense owner support to offer 50-50 BRI split, and even far fewer owners willing to give players better than 50 percent.

It's getting a little confusing. Owners [spearheaded by OKC, PHX, IND] wanted a hard cap to prevent another Miami fiasco and now that's off the table (players won that argument?) the union now refuses to take a 50/50 split?

Fuck that.

ChrisMannixSI.........

Response from players is, predictably, angry. But most of the frustration is with the union. Lot of players don't have a problem with 50-50

League source confirms report by @KBergCBS. Source says that NBA refused to meet with NBPA without precondition that union move down ...

From what I understand, Yes!

ChrisMannixSI............

The idea that the season was going to start on time was absurd to begin with. Now it's a question of how much time will be missed?

I love the idea of a shortened season.

The Players are making stupid demands, 50-50 sounds pretty damn fair. If not generous as hell in this economic climate.

Just had hot ass sex with Eddy Curry!

The NBPA has postponed its regional meeting in Miami on Sunday, email to players late Saturday says. Meeting on Monday in LA still on.

WojYahooNBA........

The late cancellation of Miami meeting has many wondering if union's huddling instead with NBA on Sunday, but I have no confirmation on it.

ChrisMannixSI........

Sudden cancellation of NBPA's meeting in Miami will fuel speculation that owners, players will try one more time to get a deal.

Unclear if two sides will meet, however. But timing of cancellation--when many players were already in Miami for FIU game--is curious.

Billy Hunter sent the email to players cancelling regional meeting in Miami on Sunday at 11:12 PM on Saturday.

The NBPA had regional informational player meetings set up in Miami and LA for Sunday and Monday, respectively. Memo says LA's still on.

Via union source: Meeting was scheduled for Sunday but players in Miami for FIU game requested it be held on Saturday night. So they had it.

So yes, union talked with players in Miami on Saturday; will meet with more in LA on Monday. And NBA will cancel first two weeks of season.

WojYahooNBA.............

In Miami meeting on Saturday night, union source says players were united on holding firm at 53 percent of BRI. Owners want 50-50 split.

WojYahooNBA.........

To be clear: Stern's said he will cancel first two weeks of season if no deal by Monday. No new reporting here. Just assuming no deal.

KBergCBS........

So here's where we are: At their previous % of 43, owners would get $11.3B/six years... at 50 pct, they'd get $13.1B ...

At 48.5 vs. 51.5 for players -- a sensible midpoint between positions -- owners would get $13.5B/six years ...

At 48.5 pct, owners would be $367M/year better off that previous deal, which more than addresses $300M annual loss ...
