I gave it a shot. Not much of a soccer fan. I find it very nerve-wracking. Maybe if they had a star that I could get excited about. Do they? I watched the last 30 minutes and rarely saw the U.S. on offense.
Not really

It's as if they are teaching the kids these days to make nice short passes, trap the ball, and make sure to share the ball, don't be selfish. You need a guy who has only one thing on his mind; put the ball in the goal, and he has the extreme skill and desire to do it.

So they need Jamie Tartt

Sounds like a kid who couldn't figure out how to hit a curve ball when he was 11
Nah, just got tired of falling asleep out on the field. I think I played baseball from t-ball til about 3rd grade.

Thats soccer though. Depending on their formation right? If they are up and slide a defender back and pack it in, that's what they think is the best way to win. Kinda like a zone in hoops.

You know alot of these players now grew up playing futsal (Kinda like indoor soccer) as well. That is all about short tight passing and ball movements. It has REALLT helped my daughters game out for sure.

Back in the early 70's I would go to West Moreland Park and play pick up soccer with Iranians & Saudi's. They were here going to school, very nice. They love soccer.
The two Saudi's I got to know would tap out GI Joes of Levis and send them home as they were outlawed. They drove TransAms too.

I did not know that. Had to google futsal.

Sounds a lot like my experience with soccer ... bored out of my mind playing it ... finally got to play a fun fall sport in 5th grade when parents let me play football!

I’m sorry you didn’t score a lot of goals mate. Try to remember your PeeWee years when you were a goal scoring machine. Just absolutely destroying the opposing goalkeeper until you were forced to play with older kids.

Indoor soccer was so much fun.

That was a fun few minutes watching Mexico thinking they were going to advance and then giving up a goal in classic fashion ... real shame to see them go ... ADIOS MEXICO!

Throw another Shrimp on the Barbie; 48th ranked Australia are 11+ minutes away from moving on.
I'm still buzzing! Only the second time Australia has gotten out of the group stage (previous was Germany 2006) and the first time we've gotten two wins in the group stage.

I am concerned Iranian players and their families could face repercussions. They played a good game and should be congratulated.

Wow, it was like 4am local time
Lots of very passionate soccer fans here, mostly descendants of post WW2 immigrants from Greece, Italy, and the Balkans.

Most good quality soccer is in the middle of the night here. If you’re lucky you get an early match starting around 9pm or a late match starting at 6am.

Argentina and Messi are next up for Australia.

Reminds me of the 1994 World Cup qualifiers when Australia faced Argentina and Maradona, and almost pulled off an upset.

Fun facts: Australia’s current coach Graham Arnold played in this match. The father of current Argentinian player Alexis Mac Allister also played.

The Argentinian coach is somehow claiming that they’re not favourites. Yeah right!

Only two days rest for these two teams, which is utter bullshit! Some teams are getting five days rest.

I'm really interested to see what happens in the Spain-Japan and Germany-Costa Rica matches in a few hours. I have to assume that it would be a major upset for the Germans not to advance out of group play, but with only 1 point in 2 matches, they're really under the gun. That said, Japan dropping their match with Costa Rica a few days ago has really saved their chances. Spain doesn't really have much incentive to play for anything more than a draw against Japan, but Japan is very much at risk of being passed up, even if they earn another point today.

Crazy to me that Japan's H2H victory over Germany is less significant than goal differential and goals scored.

Also--who predicted Morocco dominating their group, with the #2 world-ranked Belgians needing a win in their 3rd match against a very good Croatian side to advance? Talk about an upset...

That didn't take long. Belgium gets unexpectedly eliminated, and their coach quits

Germany already up 1 on CR, and Spain up on Japan. If those hold, Germany advances. 75 minutes left, and any one of those 3 still have a legit chance to join Spain in the KO round.

I assumed they were soccer fans there because of all their time spent in prison....since it is The Island Of Criminals right?
