The Small Forward position

I was a proponent of going after DeRosan last summer. But things have changed, as they often do in the NBA. If we were to go after a wing who can't spread the floor but is solid from mid range....I would rather go after Evan Turner. He would come cheaper and I think may be better helping run the offense when needed next to Dame or cJ.

I will point out that although Turner is a very good NBA player, and can help the Blazers off the bench......he is a good example of a top two pick who never lived up to expectations because he has yet to excel at 3 point shooting. This comment probably belongs in another thread, but unless Ben Simmons ends up playing PF, he will need to be a very good outside shooter or he will end up like Turner......good, just not a difference maker.

Flip flopper... :devilwink:

I keep going back and forth to what the team needs, IMO. I mean how good or bad was Aminu? Is he, or Harkless for that matter, the guy that can be that 3rd "star", or are they the "defensive" glue type guy that can guard multiple positions? Maybe that's ok with Dame, CJ and a big like Monroe or Horford who can be that 3rd guy

Sooo right there with you. I cannot for the life of me put my finger on one single position we should focus on.

I am there with both of you. I think it will come down to the best FA available to us. I would hope Neil can get a sense a head of time from their agents on our chances with their clients.

Since most are UFA they won't be using us to drive up the salary....knowing it will get matched. Hopefully N.O has a good relationship with Bill Duffy (Horford's agent) I doubt he has any relationship with Dwight's new agent..... Perry Rogers.

From there I assume he will have a few different contingency plans worked out.

I just don't see many options at SF. (That are not pipe dreams) So my guess he is looking at scoring bigs. Maybe he does make another try at Monroe. I wonder if the Plumlee brothers want to play together? Not that I would want to get rid of Mason, but Milwaukee might want that in return. And they need a center if they get rid of Monroe.

An interior defensive big that can also get buckets.

Biggest need. Central focus, IMO.

I don't know that any one position is more/less important than the others, but I do have my preferences. All I know is that the entire front-court needs to be overhauled - two new starters at those three positions. I'm least hopeful about getting an upgrade at SF, so it seems like more effort should go into getting a new PF and C. If we're able to upgrade PF and C, then I'll be very happy to have Harkless at SF. Conversely, if we're able to get an amazing SF and solid PF I'll be very happy with Plumlee at C. Or if we got an amazing SF and Cousins I'd be decently happy with Vonleh at PF.

See, I disagree. Read below. Blue is spot on, and that makes it impossible to zero in on a position. More like zero in on a player or two in those three positions and then the balance of our roster will be just fine.

Still our biggest need.

Then get 2... I don't care, but make sure ONE of them is a defensive big that can get some buckets down low too.
Yup, that's what I'm saying - two of the three front-court positions need to be upgraded. So, in that scenario, we'd end up with at least a new PF or a new C...and because there are so few good SFs in the league, we should probably get both PF AND C and stick with Harkless at SF.

Harkless has shown he can get buckets in a hurry!

I agree with you guys. Personally I think Hark is fine starting at the three. Davis needs to be our BU PF and PLums needs to go to the bench for a starting C.

But here in lies the dilemma. Who the hell is available that would be an upgrade without getting rid of other core guys?

Gasol as our PF and Whiteside as Center? The C position is what I see will be hardest to fill.

Gasol as PF and Howard at C? This might actually have a small chance of being possible?

Marvin Williams at PF and Horford/Gasol/Whiteside/Howard at C

There has been some tlak about this Marvin Williams guy. I have no clue who he is. Ill trust ya because you seem to know the league alot better than me. I just know the Blazers alot better than you. ;)

I dont think I want Gasol as Center unless you meant Mark though and he isnt a FA. Pau is.

Is Williams a paint guy or perimeter? If he is paint, maybe Pau would work at C, but if he is not, then Pau would neverwork at C. Dhoward though?

Actually I think if you get a Dhoward, Meyers would be okay at PF. He really bring the bigs out and allow Howard every rebound there is.

My prediction. Meyers breaks out with 15/8 next year and solidifies his part as a core moving forward. Now we only need 1 more impact guy. :)

Williams at PF, Aldrich at C. Good to go.

Williams is a stretch 4 that can play some 3. Started for Charlotte this year. He's a plus defender guarding both positions. 40% 3point shooter. Look him up.

Gasol is more of a 5 then a 4. He doesn't have the footspeed to guard 4s. He's also a solid rim protector...
He would thrive at the 5 next to a stretch 4 like Williams. Would give him tons of room to operate on the block. Gasol can also stretch the floor as a shooter which would bring opposing centers out of the key.

Whiteside/Horford?
Noah/Horford.....cheaper
Whiteside/Williams
Mahinmi/Horford
Meyers/Horford.......I think any of those make us better.

Noah is a NOah. He is old and injured. It would be like adding Kaman to this team. Why sign someone to sit on the bench and possibly become an assistant coach in 2 years?

We wont have the money most likely but i'd love to get Batum back as well as add one of Howard/Whiteside/Horford. Batum was frustrating as all hell but he is one gifted player and would fit perfectly in this team that passes as often as we do. Having a rotation at the SG/SF of CJ/Batum/Aminu would be nice. Can also go small with a lineup of Liller/CJ/Batum/Aminu/One of those three bigs from earlier could cause a lot of havoc. Also if we happen to get Batum/Whiteside there ages lineup perfectly with Aminu/CJ/Lillard and we coudl have that lineup for years and watch it get better and better as the players age a little bit more and get more comfortable with each other.

Williams at PF, Aldrich at C. Good to go.
IMO, this is the kind of thinking that keeps us as an also ran. We are in desperate need for a star player. Despite what some want to believe, we probably aren't 1 year away. Get as good of a player as possible via FA or trade then figure out what role players best get Dame, CJ and player X to title contention

You assume that I don't want to pursue Durant/Horford first. I do. I'm just also operating under the assumption that they'll be turned down by the star free agents, and that these ARE the best free agent options that fit our current roster and are actually available to us.

How is that incompatible with your philosophy?

Do I even need to say why Cole Aldrich is an awful idea?

Williams is a 14/8 PF per 36 minutes and had an 18.6 PER this season. Not really sure that's an upgrade over Davis who is 11/13 per 36 minutes with a 18.7 PER. Davis loves the city of Portland and is younger. Both have the same defensive rating FWIW.

Williams is a better shooter from 3 though
