Also keep in mind this is presented as Plan B

Only thing I don't like is that it means we wouldn't be getting Ferguson.

Melo would be a great fit here, he could revitalize his career as a Blazer.

I can't believe the consensus is Melo would be a good fit here lol. Forgot about defense have we?

Melo isn't gonna stop is from getting swept by GSW.

Melo would leave after a year, and the consensus would be that we should've never traded a pick in a great draft for him.

Even if we gave up 120 points we would score 125. Sounds like today's league to me...

Of course there would be some nights where we hold teams to <100.

Don't judge Melo based off his last few seasons in NY. The Knicks are a mess.

I have a personal trainer that i'm pretty close with who today tells me, that he watched game 5 last night with a Blazer front office exec. He says he talked informally about Blazers plans or what they're looking to do in the draft. Source said that the Blazers are talking with the Knicks about a Leonard+15 swap for Carmelo (other players would be involved, but they weren't mentioned).

A couple of big caveats:

  • The Blazers are eyeing a player or two in the mid-lottery, and if able to get them, the Knicks deal will not go thru
  • Its dependent on Carmelo allowing the trade

Disclaimer: don't shoot the messenger

EDIT:

something like this would work

http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=yddwywx4

Leonard/Festus/Davis -> Melo/O'Quinn

Ok, slight modification:

Instead of Leonard, FEEC, Davis and the 15th pick, we ship them Leonard, Mo, Davis and the 20th pick for Melo and KOQ.

Then, we send the 15th, 26th, our 2019 1st round pick and Crabbe to IND for Paul George.

We now have our Big 5 (take THAT GSW), one of whom can actually play defense:

Dame
C.J.
PG13
Melo
Nurk

We beat both GSW and CLE for the title, Melo and PG13 are both so frickin' happy they both agree to resign here for a discount, we end up being THE destination for all the ring chasing vets who will sign with us for the vet min and we go on to win three more titles.

Ok, time to wake up now...

Carmelo's a ball stopper who can't defend and doesn't shoot efficiently and is on the downside of his career.

That all magically goes away once he gets out of New York?

i second this.....motivation is key for a lot of players. Melo has the tools to be a good defensive player. think about if he went to cleveland..i bet melo would be a great defensive player.
People use to say durant didnt play D....

Not necessarily, if he goes to somewhere like Brooklyn he still has to try and be the hero and will eventually realize he can't do it by himself. But if he goes somewhere like Portland I think he's shown he is more than capable of being a fantastic team player based off his time with team USA.

Front office exec will no longer be sharing any info with this personal trainer. Or maybe he was just throwing this out there as a joke to see if it would get leaked.
A very very small # of "front office execs" have any clue what Neil is up to, maybe only one and that's McGowan.

Not saying lighning will strike twice, but isn't that basically what happened with Zach Randolph? Wasn't he a ball stopping black hole that didn't play defense and scored inefficiently when he left the Knicks? Half a season later, he completely revitalized his career in MEM.

We've all seen Melo with Team USA. Put him in the release guy role for all the traps our guards face, and let him bomb open midrange-3pt jumpers nightly.

He's got the size to be a PF.

Would you rather have ET/Aminu/Moe make decisions in the 4 on 3, or Melo? I bet you Dame and CJ get so many more open looks if Melo is out there with Nurk manning the middle.

Just the sheer thought of Dame/CJ/Melo/Nurk on the floor together really moves my needle. They would need to send help, and one of those 4 would be open in their spots. That offense would be lethal working outside in, and inside out with Nurk working the block and passing to an open Dame/CJ/Melo out of the double.

That was half (OK, 98%) tongue in cheek, but that starting line up would be deadly and in addition to Paul George, we'd still have our remaining two best perimeter defenders in Turner and Aminu coming off the bench and we'd have two great rebounders/rim protectors in Nurk and KOQ. Our defense would actually get better when the second unit comes is, plus we'd always have at least two of Dame/PG13/C.J. and Melo on the floor at all times. So, our offense wouldn't die instantly when the bench comes in, like it has for the past several seasons.

what you all are forgetting is if melo came to portland and that it is a uuuugee deal if we could be on espn every night(and we would). With that exposure comes a level of deference around the league from officials (our stars might actually start getting treated as such). This is a popularity driven league and if we can land one of the 5-6 biggest names in the nba, basketball issues aside it would be very good for our franchise as a whole.

Not to mention neither dame or cj really had a real vet mentor in their careers the likes of melo. Maybe Wes but he's no where near the player Melo is. My point is Melo would be an excellent resource for our young guys. Despite his lack of success in the NBA I dont think anyone else has more international success than Carmelo and if we get that player we can make some real noise in the west.

YAAAAAAAAAAAAASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How's that when he has 3 years left on his contract? :dunno:

Interestingly Portland had a better team defensive rating than the Cavaliers, who were dominant until the met the Warriors. End of the game team with most points wins. If you look at overall defensive ratings GSW and SAS are 1 and 2 then after that the next batch of teams is very meh. Middle of the pack is where the rest of the better teams are.

Melo has never played for a coach like Stotts....I think the system fits his game and with him next to Nurk...who do you double team? I loved Melo's game with team USA....for Leonard and a pick who'd even hesitate? If you could move Crabbe for Paul George you'd be in the finals ....Dame CJ Paul George and Nurk with Turner, Aminu, Vonleh and Ed and Napier playing defense off the bench. That's a team that contends

Because I believe that Damian and CJ will ALWAYS have Defensive problems and are average or below average height for their positions and thus always going to suffer at the defensive end.....I would take a chance at Melo knowing that its a short 3 year window. If all else, after a few years he creates better cap situation by leaving. But, we'd have a serious chance at deep WCF action. Sometimes you gotta take reasonable risks. This sounds like one to me.

But I prefer Paul George.

Absolutely NO problem with this deal. It's a low risk/high reward type trade. Move a developmental young player & The Great White Dope for the chance that Anthony will prosper in Portland's team first attitude. Hell. He had a championship pedigree at 'Cuse. Only problem is getting him to agree and making money march up.

Carmelo Anthony, a vet mentor? No thank you very much.
