The upcoming off season

Maybe. Not necessarily for us, though.
I think, if we had Hibbert, that both Nic and Hibbert would be retained - and that pretty much means their salaries would increase. I know mags will just chalk this up to me having "personal issues" with LMA, but I think he's the most likely "core" player to be gone by the time his contract is up.

Hibbert was also a great defender when up for his contract, and is a legit 7 foot C, not a PF moonlighting as a C out of need.
What teams with cap space are likely to overpay Hickson, do you think?

Who has cap space this summer? I think it really all depends on what will happen with Milsap, Jefferson, and Howard. Will D12 stay in LA? Will Utah keep Milsap, Jefferson or both? If all three of those guys are off the market, I think Hickson could get a very hefty contract.

tyreke would be nice because he can play 1-3 in a pinch, and someone like milsap or another big that can play 4-5 would really help the bench

and for gods sake freeland, SHOW ME SOMETHING OR BEG YOUR WAY BACK TO SPAIN

I am not sure I understand the Freeland issue from people right now.

He has been bad but the whole bench has been garbage. He has arguably been better than Babbitt (look it up - It is crazy). Only players that are easily to argue that have truly been playing better than he off the bench are Leonard and Barton.

Of course I want him to get better but he already has the last month vs the first.

I think the problem that most people have with Freeland is that we thought he'd at least be a solid player off the bench. Nothing spectacular, but at least solid. He has been horrible. A complete disappointment, and he's not making bad money. I think around $3 million a year. The guy is 25 so it's highly unlikely that he'll suddenly get better.

id rather have the 3 million in cap space is all, a minimum salary 2nd rounder could give us what he has thus far

It is not skills that are needing to get better it is acclimation to the pace and style of the league at least. Next year at this time he would be a solid bench gun but I think our bench will be deeper next year so you may not tell.

I'm surprised the Freeland even made it to the NBA. Despite all of his awfulness, I've actually been moderately impressed with a couple aspects of his game - I can't remember what it was, but I think maybe he had good awareness and coordination around the hoop?

If Freeland could give us this season's Haslem numbers; then I would be pleasantly surprised. That is a very low ceiling to ask for. He has failed to even get to that point.

Our bench besides Leonard is utter trash. There is no exception for any of them. I wish we could just trade all of them for 1 decent bench player.

I haven't paid attention to Haslem in several years. But during that Wade/Shaq championship, Haslem was the epitome of what a PF should be. I'm sure he's probably deteriorated quite a bit, but even if he doesn't have the ability he still knows HOW to play.

OH I wasn't asking for Freeland to be like Hasleem then. I'm talking now. Hasleem is a bit slow, but is still a good position defender. He seems to help out a lot on the defensive end; which helps the team gamble for steals. He's a good role player (not great right now); which is all I ask of Freeland. Set picks, grab a decent rebound or two for a put back and set some mean picks.

Yeah, but that's what I was getting at - Haslem knows HOW to play. Freeland doesn't. I know you were asking for Freeland do do what Haslem is doing NOW, not yesteryear. But it's still asking QUITE a lot because Haslem really understands what to do when he's on the floor.
Though again - I have seen signs of intelligence from Freeland. So it's not far-fetched to think that he could eventually become a solid player like today's Haslem - and that's far better than I ever thought Freeland would be. But he's first got to learn the NBA game before he can apply his instincts consistently.

much rather make a roster cut and start giving 10-day contracts, try a guy like Hassan Whiteside who is buried on a Rio Grande team with two other C's

We are talking about improving this off-season in general. Have you chimed in with what you would like to see Mick?

I'd like basically an entire new bench. Keep Leonard of course, move him into the starting lineup unless we upgrade that position. We need to look at the draft. Going after Smith would be a monumental mistake.

Agreed on Smith, I doubt he would come anyways though.

So spend basically all Free-Agent dollars on bench instead of trying to get a stud (that may or may not happen)?

Bolster the bench through draft and MLE. Of course, getting rid of Aldridge would snag us some depth too.

That's the route I would go. We could get a defensive center that can play starter minutes and be fine. Leonard can be the offensive center (in time of course); then try and grab a bench scorer like Reddick or YUCK Mayo; something of that caliber. Then use whatever we have left to grab a defensive bench player and a vet that can fill some void.

I'm sure GMs around the league are clamoring for that deal.

Draft: BPA all the way!

Even if that means taking another PG like Trey Burke.

Back to the the main topic of the thread for a sec.

I can't wait for the upcoming offseason and seeing what Olshey can pull out of his sleeve. His first draft was a homerun, going to be a grand slam once Leonard pans out. Barton was a 2nd round steal and should keep him on the bench moving forward.

Olshey knows what he's doing. He convinced freaking Donald Sterling to spend money. If a GM can do that, he has his shit together and can sell anything.

Trade.hickson for whatever assets you can get. Spread the cap space among 3 to 4 good free agents. Dont overspend on guys. So many decent guys that can play. You can probably sign a guy like Matt Barnes to a $3 million a year deal. Boobie Gibson for $3 million a year and then throw 5-6 million a year at Landry, or keep hickson and still go after a boobie and Barnes type

Assuming a salary cap of 60 million, teams with more than MLE(5 million) of cap space:

Atlanta:42 million
Charlotte: 16 million
Cleveland:28 million
Dallas: 18 million
Detroit: 24 million
Houston:20 million
Indiana: 12 million
LAC: 18 million
Milwaukee: 19 million
Minnesota: 6 million
NO: 27 million
Orlando: 11 million
Philadelphia: 16 million
Phoenix: 20 million
Portland: 17 million
Sacramento: 10 million
SA: 22 million
Toronto: 7 million
Utah: 35 million

Numbers aren't entirely accurate, as they just represent the difference between the cap, and the player salaries on the books. It doesn't reflect cap holds on current players and also roster charges for being below minimum # of players. Cap holds all but eliminates cap space for a few teams that seem likely to re-sign their current players, like Philly with Bynum, Minnesota with Pekovic.
