The what-if draft

I know some are speculating that we'll just punt this draft, or trade out for vets, etc....but let's just say that somehow, someway we get both a pick b/w 5-7 (can't take Knight or Irving) and a $3M late-first pick (26 or so). We're all pretty much in agreement that we need a PGotF and a Big Man.

Would you pick a big with the early pick, and take a chance on a flyer late (since we still have Andre around)? Or would you take someone like Jimmer/Kemba high and then whatever scraps (and I'm assuming Faried is gone) happen to land at 26?

Personally, I'd probably be really happy with a Biyambo/Malcolm Lee draft. But I could make Kemba/Tyler (or HCP's favorite, Jimmer/Motiejunas) work also

I'd be tempted to go Kanter-Morris. Maybe Biyombo-Morris, but like that Kanter might provide some offense. Would worry about his knees, though, and would need a medical staff outside of our own to check them out.

I seem to remember a breakdown from a few years back by one of the ESPN folk that took a look at basically this question. That analysis suggested that bigs that fall out of the top 3 or 4 spots are very often busts, and that there is almost as good of a chance at getting a big at the end of the first round that is quality as getting one late lottery. Conversely, Guards are easier to rank and so it is much more likely that picking a guard in the late lottery will pay off than one that slipped to the end of the first round.

I really wish i could remember who wrote the article so I could site it ,but it was at least 2 years old.

Anyway, based of that, I would grab a PG with the early pick and a big with the late one.

Depends on the mock. He had a horrible Euro camp, and is now heading here to work out for teams individually.

Kanter/Valanciunas early, then Jenkins/Jackson/Morris. However, if both of the those bigs are gone, then I take Walker/Knight early and then Motiejunas/Vucevic late. For some unexplainable reason, I'm not particularly interested in Biyombo.

I go with Valanciunas early; I don't care that he can't help for a year or two. I think that he will be the best man out of this draft in three years. This guy shoots plus 70% in every league he has been in; yes i know he can only dunk but he sure knows when and how to do it. Draft Express best scenario is that he would be a combination of Andris Biedrins and Joaquin Noah. A really big man with a tremendous motor. I don't think any of the big man busts in the past have had a great motor. And he shoots well from the free throw line which makes me think he could be a good spot up shooter. Should trade our other pick for an experienced backup PG, or sign one as a free agent.
