Besides the fact his outrage and concern is absolutely fabricated (and done for the sole purpose of making money), this is the kind of shit that comes out of it.

http://nba.fanhouse.com/2009/11/25/roys-anthem-absence-draws-attention/

maybe he would like to go bac to africa and be slaughtered like the rest
of the savages there

no doubt in my mind, that dudes a terrorist.

Just another overpaid punk who doesn't realize men and women have been
dying fighting wars for many years to afford him the freedom to shoot a
basketball through a metal circle and be a rich man. What a jerk, Stern
should suspend this idiot.

The very fact that this guy has opted to make himself stand out by his
absence, at least to me, is just another example of someone of excessive
financial stature using the guise of "exercising his constitutional
rights" to draw attention to himself. Ignnore the guy. He's not worth
the attention (and hope he fouls out in the first quarter).

Although some may feel it is within his rights not to participate in the
National Anthem, how else can one construe this act of seeking a moment
to himself at this particular point in the game to be none other than a
snubbing? With all it's imperfections, America continues to be a work in
progress that makes it the most freedom and liberty loving country in
the world. Brave men and women die around the world to make it and keep
it this way. I guess he could always choose to play overseas and relieve
himself of the indignity of having to carry in his pockets those many
greenbacks containing the photos of dead American Presidents, the words
"The United States of America," and the name of God.

Why doesn't he stand and honor the country that is honoring him?????
This is crap. It is our National Anthem. Send him to the front lines in
Afghanistan for 1 week, then we'll see if he wants to honor this country
that fights to keep his freedom alive, and his NBA salary!!

No It sounds like to me hes just another project skid who thinks now
since hes has some money in his pocket he can do whatever he wants .I
bet he stood with his team mates and respected the National Anthem when
he was in college .Its typical project ghetto skid attitude that's
all.Its called the black crack head baby generation the Dumbest of Dumb!

Brandon Roy is obviously protesting the National Anthem of the Country
that has presented him with the opportunity for wealth beyond
imagination. I find it unacceptable that he would stand for the National
Anthem. Brandon Roy probably has no other viable skills, probably
illiterate and a would be gang banger if he wasn't an NBA player. If
Brandon Roy doesn't believe in the U.S.A. he should leave the Country
and take Obama with him.

Maybe Roy will come out of the tunnel one day
packing a bomb under his jersey praising Ala then blow himself up along
with the rest of the stadium and then maybe people will wake up

He is making millions of dollars a year because soldiers died to keep
this country free. He should try to play hoop in IRAQ or South Korea and
see how much he gets paid. Making the big bucks in the U.S.A. and can't
pay respect or maybe is too stupid to realize how he got where he is. JERK..

And that's not the best of it. Read through some of the crap these idiots say.

Canzano just whored himself and Brandons right (yes, it's a RIGHT) to not stand in line with his teammates (after saying it wasn't a big deal 10 months ago), for website hits and $$.

I think Canzano's hero is McCarthy. :)

Send that shit to him so he can see the hate he is creating.

Canzano put this heat on Roy. It's all about (JC's) rep as a journalist and getting his name out there.

The Anthem should have been a no-news type of deal. I find the anthem at every sporting even in this country to be LAME! save that shit for the olympics.

Send that shit to him so he can see the hate he is creating.

Knowing him, he'll pull the "I'm concerned about you" card, and try to spin it as a problem for the reader, and not a mistake/stupid move/dumb thing he did.

We have a winnah. And besides, sending anything to JC just reinforces his bloated sense of self worth and strokes his ego. His ONLY goal is to generate page views and to boost readership of his shitty column and the mostly shitty rag that he works for.

This is exactly the kind of thing that JC wants. He should work for the Enquirer.

if he is such a damn good journalist, he needs to move to a bigger audience...back to LA!

I was at the book store and saw a book called "The Best Sports Writing of 2009" - 400 pages of sports journalism and articles. Canzano wasn't in it.

Jus' sayin'

Like the 2nd or third comment in that link....I dont see how Roy's "moment" cant be 30sec before or 30sec after the National Anthem. He can have it both ways! Next question if it hasnt been asked already....When did he start skiping out on the National Anthem before his bball games? College? HS?

I'm assuming these ignorant comments are mostly from citizens of "less-developed"
states like Mississippi and Georgia, oh and I see one from California....

For years, AOL Fanhouse has been quite the pro-war site.

This one sums it up pretty well, in my opinion:
He wants to have a moment by himself before each game, during the National Anthem is NOT the time to do it. He can do it any other time. It is so disrespectful to this country, his teammates, the fans, and every soldier who fought for the freedoms we have in this country. A multi-millionare NBA player snubbing our anthem. Shameful.

This one sums it up pretty well, in my opinion:

The ironic part is that Roy will end up standing at attention for our national anthem 1000 more times than the nut jobs calling him a terrorist. I am guessing he already has done it 500 hundred more times than you or I.

I think the real important question is, does he wear a lapel?

Oh, please. EVERY professional athelete hears the national anthem on a regular basis by virtue of their profession. It comes with the territory. You might as well argue that criminals have more respect for the laws of this country because they spend more time in a courtroom than most Americans.

By choosing to reject a public display of respect for the flag, Roy is making a much louder statement than anything he has ever done in his career up to this point. It's a blatant disrespect for this country and the troops who fought and died for our flag.

So Shooter, did this change your opinion of Brandon Roy?

I'm guessing (from your avatar) that he was one of, if not your favorite current player. Is he in your outhouse now?

Just wondering.

For the record, I think its a dumb thing to do, but its really not that big of a deal at all. He probably should find another time before the game to get in a prayer.

It wasn't like Roy was publicizing it. You can thank Canzano for that. You never voiced this concern before you read the Canzano piece so it kind of shows that it wasn't that big of a deal. Canzano is the one who has made it a big deal. Standing for the national anthem is purely symbolic. You are sounding almost fascist and communist and Obama-like to DEMAND that he stand for the national anthem. Respect my authoritan! I always stand for the national anthem. Sometimes I do it out of respect and am "feeling" the moment of patriotism, and other times frankly I do it so as to not stick out. It is easier to do what everyone else does. If we just let this issue die (i.e. quit talking about it) it won't be that big of a deal. I suppose you next will demand that he wear a flag pin on his jersey.

This one sums it up pretty well, in my opinion:

I'm tired of you bringing up how he is disrespecting veterans and troops who fought for his freedom! Did you serve? Did you make the sacrifice? If so, good for you. I in fact did. And what I went through and learned is that people are free to do what they want. That's what makes this country so special. Quit shoving this bullshit down peoples throats! As a vet, YOU are starting to offend and piss me off!

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to "THE" HCP again.

repped.

For me this issue isnt about disrespect or terrorism, its about Brandon knowing better. He should know that the position he is in makes him a target and puts him in a microscope. Brandon should know well enough to avoid situations that could be considered controversial. Personally I dont care what he does as long as he keeps hitting those big shots.

Agreed. It is not as if Brandon was funding terrorist activity or showing disrespect to anyone intentionally. As a veteran, I am ok with Brandon honoring America in other ways (charity work and raising his family properly) and putting his effort into playing his hardest. I have a much bigger problem with the athletes that are joking around during the singing.

It is a shame that after 9-11 how it seems that everything gets tied into patriotism.

If Canzano wants to be on a patriotic high horse, I hear the Guard is hiring. Let him put his life on the line before speaking about how veterans feel about the anthem.

Send that shit to him so he can see the hate he is creating.

He doesn't create that hate. The person who typed that response was already racist and a moron. If anything, this shines the light of day on thoughts like that so people can make fun of it.

I don't think that it's disrespecting veterans, personally, but I find it in bad taste because it's found disrespectful by so many people who attend the game and choose to honor the country as a whole by standing.

If I attend a wedding and someone else doesn't stand when the bride enters, I think I'd feel a bit bad. Not because the person not standing is offending ME, but because I find it to be in bad taste.

I have a similar opinion of Roy (alone) separating himself from his team and the rest of the audience during the SSB.

A good test for Canzano would be for him to go to a military base at colors. See how many people that put there life on the line day in, day out scramble to get into a building or car so that they do not have to stand for the raising/lowering of the flag. I know on my sub it was common for twenty people to be lined up at the hatch until they were over.

I know, it's been causing cognitive dissonance for me just reading his drivel. This isn't unusual though. If you spend 15 minutes in the OT forum you'll find cognitive dissonance galore!

repped. Thanks to you and "THE" HCP for your service. I don't believe in a lot of wars the US has gotten into the past 30 or so years, but I definitely support the folks who lay it all on the line for our country. You can dislike political policy and still have incredible respect for veterans.

You never voiced this concern before you read the Canzano piece so it kind of shows that it wasn't that big of a deal.
It shows nothing of the kind. All it shows is that I and many other people weren't aware of it.

Canzano is the one who has made it a big deal.
Good for Canzano. Nobody else covering the Blazers apparently had the balls to bring the topic up.

You are sounding almost fascist and communist and Obama-like to DEMAND that he stand for the national anthem.
I'm not demanding anything. All I'm doing is expressing my outrage over what Roy is doing, which I think is very disrespectful.

I'm tired of you bringing up how he is disrespecting veterans and troops who fought for his freedom! Did you serve? Did you make the sacrifice?
So I have to be a veteran before I can comment on what Roy is doing?? By that rationale, I also can't comment on how Roy is playing, since I personally have never been an NBA player.

While I'm at it, I'm getting a little tired of you tooting your own horn about your military service. You being a veteran gives you no more "authority" than any of us. Yes, "people are free to do what they want," which means I'm free to criticize Roy for what I perceive to be disrespectful behavior toward his own country.
