Written by communist Woody Guthrie. In 4th-grade Music during the McCarthy era, my conservative Iowa teachers would have us sing it. Ha ha.
Yeah but in Iowa they probably learned it from Eddie Arnold or Burl Ives....for me in Iowa the first I heard do it was probably Pete Seeger

I was going to post the lyrics but I got in trouble the last time I did that.
That's because you post stuff that gets people frothing at the mouth and tearing at each other's throats.
Try something like this:

"If you're going to San Francisco
Be sure to wear

Some flowers in your hair
If you're going to San Francisco
You're gonna meet
Some gentle people there

For those who come
To San Francisco
Summertime
Will be a love-in there
In the streets of San Francisco
Gentle people
With flowers in their hair . . . "

Peep how the imagery parallels my life.

Yeah, I fight everyday for equality but at the end of the day I have to give my son hope. Because the arc of justice ALWAYS bends toward right. I love as the end how the music becomes jubilant when he plays for the boy...

THANK YOU FOR SHARING!

I've been a Gary Clark fan for awhile now and haven't heard this one!!

IT'S AMAZINGLY DONE!

Spread it around, the type of song it is means it's not going to get any airplay on the radio.

Aw, you can't really call ole Woody a Communist for reflecting the leanings of Hollywood in his feeling for the Country and it's dirt poor peasant immigrants, populating the continent west of the Hudson in the 30's. There are may forces and feeling mixed in his messages of that day. Love that song though. Woody focused on the beginnings of what became to be the WWII generation, the ultimate American, far more than a Communist.

I loved this in the comments:

"Americans have this problem with denying that something can exist, especially when they don't personally experience it. We also have this problem when someone calls it out, we get defensive about it, sometimes that's because we feel guilty because we have been seeing it and ignoring it (don't get involved) or because we are actually okay with it, but don't want to admit it, so we attack the person calling it out instead of saying, "I think black people should be satisfied with where they are at, we don't beat them, we don't keep them down economically, we don't discriminate against them, look they have the United Negro College Fund, 10% Minority Business Set asides, we let some of them be millionaires on the screen, the court, the stage and the field, and look we elected one of them as President of the United States, what else to they want from US, WE have given them all this, and still this guy has the nerve to complain about an injustice he perceived, experienced, or heard about, he is so totally a sell out, this is bullshit..,. he's dividing us.." If this video causes you to DIVIDE from your fellow man, then maybe that's a reflection on you, not on the artist."
