This Picture Is the Reason Why......

I could make a team that "looks like" that too. Stockton, West, Bird, McHale, Walton..... You don't think that team would win a title today? (BTW, your thinly veiled racism did not go unnoticed).

Players today probably can jump higher and sprint faster, but that only does you so much good. Just look at how team USA has barely beaten, and even lost to teams full of Euro-scrubs.

You're a fucking clown. You think I went out of my way to find a pic of white guys? I was reading an article and this popped up. Looking at it I realized how "unathletic" or "NBA" they looked.

I'm gonna have to go ahead and sort of

disagree with you there.

You underestimate the skill level of the older generations. Cousy would still be viable. Wilt? Kareem? Walton? Right out of college they would still embarrass this crop of big-bodied, no-skill goons in todays NBA. Disappointing post HCP, you're supposed to be an MVP here!

Bro, you just named 3 of the best players to EVER play! Of course they would do well....I'm claiming today's below average players would dominate back then.

I don't know about that. Today's below average players, while presumably more athletic, might look like unskilled goobs against the Chuck Taylor 50s-60s guys. They would be completely out of context. Yep, you need a time machine for that one, call Stewie Griffin.

......you can't compare players from different eras. Plain and simple! This looks like the old guys in my neighborhood playing a pickup game at the local church. Shit, could you imagine what todays players would do to these guys? Michael Beasley or Evan Turner would score 80 on them every night! You trying to tell me that these motherfuckers would be able to stop even Nolan Smith or Eric Maynor? Props to old school ballers, but the game has changed!

Why is #16 setting a pick on his own teammate? That's one thing that's changed...

The game was A LOT rougher back then.

The reason the game is so finesse style now is because they call fouls on anything. "hand checking" is garbage... the game now is played for ratings, not for the game. It's catered to the stars, plain and simple.

Says the person who probably has no ballhandling skills. Any contact that displaces a player's rhythm, Balance, Speed, or quickness is a foul. I ref players who are handchecked out of bounds. Should that be a foul? The offense is being contacted by a person who is NOT a legal defender. Stay in front of your man and stop using your hands to play defense. You play defense with your feet.

It's always funny when White people play the race card.

#hilarious

I don't think it's that relevant to compare the elite of one era with the elite of another. Truth is that an uber talented 6-11 guy in 1968 was probably just as likely to play hoops in 2013.

The difference is the role players. Back then, every team had multiple guys who were just not that big and not that athletic. If you were 6'7 and pretty good at basketball but also pretty good at accounting, accounting was probably a better long-term career option. Almost nobody came from overseas to play. Every night a superstar could pretty reliably count on getting defended multiple times by somebody who was vastly inferior, akin to the difference being guarded by a high school vs college-level basketball player.

The huge salaries of the modern NBA put a competitive premium on those jobs.

On top of that, the pool of available talent grew exponentially bigger as the league became more popular, the US population doubled in size, and the international game grew in popularity (thanks in no small part to the original Dream Team). Bigger talent pool = more talent.

Plus, coaching, drafting, scouting, traveling, training--it all got much better as the financial stakes of putting out a good team got much, much higher. This all helped to make the average NBA player better (whereas I suspect the prodigy elite-types saw much less improvement. There's an upper limit to what anybody can do with a basketball.)

The superstars are still superstars. It's everybody else who got a lot better.

Listen up, I have a little problem with people comparing LeBron to Magic. Here's why, In Magic Johnson's rookie season, he filled in for an injured Kareem Abdul-Jabaar at center and put up 42 points, 15 rebounds, and seven assists. Until I see LBJ guard a big time center in a BIG game and put a numbers like that, Leads his team to a win, He's no Magic Johnson!!

^This is also just one reason Magic Johnson is the best player to play the game.

Fuck, does this forum ever need the season to begin.

You're constantly making derogatory and racist remarks against white players, I know you're trying to be funny, but I think it's stupid.

Are you white? Did I offend your whiteness. Do you have some strong connection to slow old white players? If so, I apologize.

i guess whites will have to be content with medium sized dongs and 99% of the worlds money

In what way did they look athletic? How can you tell how athletic they are from a still photo? It's cuz they're white, right?

Bingo. You thought they were slow because they were white. Point out something in the photo that tells you how unathletic they are. Other than their skill color. How can you tell how fast they are?

fwiw steve nash would fit right in in that pic, and hes a speedy lil waterbug

Catered to the stars, as I said.

I hated calling hand checks when I reffed. The only time I would do that is if it got too chippy and needed to assert. Other than that, if it's just a jab to the wrist and doesn't affect the play, let it go. This is what they DON'T do in the NBA with the stars.

If you were to transport today's players back in time to the 50's or 60's they would hate having to wear Converse Chuck Taylors, short shorts and traveling from game to game in buses or trains. They'd also hate being paid $50 a game and having to find full time work in the offseason. None of them would want to play basketball.

Slow white guys win!

I'm not so sure about the drugs, but strength training is completely different. Explain how players today have less fundamentals than back in the day.

You explain it, I can't. But it might have something to do with most of the new guys being border-line illiterates with enormous egos.

Old-schoolers would be the Harlem Globetrotters to today's Washington Generals.

If you ever address me as such, be sure to capitalize the Y and the W. In fact, I am sitting on the throne right now.

I think Lebron from a build, game standpoint is closer to Magic (Not MJ) which is why I used him. I like you don't think he is as good as Magic. It would be interesting to see what Riley has to say about this.

As for the rest of you. I guess its best to agree to disagree. One thing that someone posted above is that players back then were tougher. Were they tougher because they worked harder on their game? And if they worked harder on their game is it more likely they were fundamentally superior than the players today?

I think they were.

They were tougher because the American culture was tougher. Which was both good and bad.

By the way, maybe #16 looks like an oaf in the picture because Cousy was as tricky as his legacy says he was.

More good than bad. The nation was a lot stronger than it is today. I think the same could be said about the NBA game.

Players today tend to rely on their strength, speed and athletic ability. And it shows. The game was by far much more entertaining in the 80's

Old-time players say the opposite, that the difference between then and now is that quadrupling the number of NBA players (from 9 X 12 to 30 X 15, while U.S. population has grown only 67% from 180M to 300M) has thinned the average bench. Having 6 assistant coaches instead of one helps less than you would think, because players now when drafted are so young and uncoached, whether American or foreign.

You must have not been good at calling it then. A "hot stove" touch is legal. However, a constant hand being utilized to steer a player and displace them is a foul and should be called.

They let black guys and Euros play now.

How is it that guys like Rudy and Sergio look like superstars when they play overseas? Bring em here and 1)they suck and 2) Kome and LBJ pad their stats playing against them.
