That was another young team. That was a team that nobody thought could go far in the playoffs. We had a young nucleus in Sheed, Damon, BG, Jermaine and JR Rider.

I look at those teams and I see some striking similarities. Here's hoping this team can have similar success

I've said this since the summer of last season when I found out we got Lopez.

It's pretty interesting if you start going down the two rosters.

I wish we had that bench though. That would be the biggest difference between the two teams. That bench would fucking murder this bench.

It seems more like 89-90 to me. The Lopez addition is the equivalent of adding Buck Williams that year.

This series reminds me of the Bulls Jazz playoff matchups. Great win! 3 more to go!

And this win was with Scott Foster behind the whistle! Redemption!

With the continued emergence of LMA and Dame, we have what neither of those teams had - two star, go-to players. 89-90 had Drexler of course, and 98-99 had Sheed, but having two options is something else entirely.

Sheed was a horrible go to guy though. Just horrible. He never wanted it. We have two on this team.

I don't know if it reminds me of any past Blazers team, but that was fun, we should do that more often.

Not similar at all. The 1999 team was DEEP. 2 starting lineups and that doesn't count Jermaine who didn't do much that season.

Damon
Rider
Walt Wlliams
Brian Grant
Sabonis

Bench:
Greg Antony
Jim Jackson
Stacey Augmon
Rasheed Wallace
Kelvin Cato

To be honest, I don't like a deep bench. The top 8 players are what matters in the post season.

You make a damn good point! Repp

I don't know where to put this stupid tidbit I thought up, so this seems as good as anywhere else.

I think we need to trade either Wes or Batum in a consolidation upgrade to get to that next level. Not sure, I love them both and they have good chemistry). we'll see how far we go with this squad, but I think we're still going a trade away from having a WCF/Finals team.

I really liked the veteran poise of the squad though. We'll see if it sustains, the Blazers played as underdogs, now that we have the win, Houston has something to prove.

Rider was our go to guy. He schooled Jeff Hornacek in the Utah series.

You're right - Rider was fantastic in that series and the opening round with Phoenix. He looked like a star in the making if he could have only got out of his own way.

To me, this team doesn't feel anything like any previous Blazer team. We've never had a player like Lillard at the point. Never. As for LA, he's become what we all hoped Sheed would be (and certainly had the talent to do so). Wes is a grinder. Nico is like a smaller, saner Sheed: He's so damn talented, but you only see flashes of it. The rest of the time you drive yourself nuts waiting for it to emerge. And the bench is just like holding on for dear life. They're better than they were, but they're still horrible.

This is a unique team in Blazer lore.

What do Wesley and Batum lack that you would want back in a trade? Something like the Clippers wings of JJ Reddick, Crawford and Matt Barnes? Or the Thunder starting SG of Thabo Sefolsha? If not can you give an example of such a player?

I think I might rather have Wesley on this team then Harden. Can you imagine a defensive backcourt of Lillard and Harden?

Aldridge and Lillard are legit first options. When you have a pair like that you need wings who can bring contributions to the table outside of scoring, and as a 3rd or 4th options in an offense.

I think the biggest hole on this team is a 3rd big man to spell Lopez/LaMarcus as well as bench scoring. A defensive specialist off the bench would be nice as well. The starters are fine.

Terry Porter was a damn good point guard.

Our starting 5 is awesome. We just need a little more bench help and we can compete for championships.

I agree with you completely. I think that the lack of inside scoring in the 2nd unit could be partially remedied by having at least 1 real PG on the team. I love the thought of grabbing Greivis Vasquez, b/c he'd pair well with Lillard (who could guard 1's next to him) for 15 mpg like Maynor used to. And, with a PG who guards 2's you have the luxury of fitting someone like CJ well as a sparkplug (not sure if he'll ever realize his potential though.

The Jazz had lost in the finals the year before and nobody picked the Blazers to win that series except the Blazer fans. I was at Game 6 when Portland eliminated Utah and the Rose Garden was so loud my ears were ringing for hours afterward and I lost my voice for two days from cheering.

Man, I wish I could remember those teams better. I was pretty young.

It was a very interesting time. The year before (88-89), the Blazers barely made the playoffs and got snotfucked by the Lakers in the first round... and they had all of the core players: Drexler, Porter, Kersey, Duckworth... but Steve Johnson at the PF and an ancient Caldwell Jones as backup PF/C. Other teams would destroy the Blazers in the paint.

Buck Williams changed all that in a hurry. He played hardnosed and banged down low to open up the perimeter for Drexler and Porter to slash and dash.

The comparison with Robin Lopez is pretty spot-on. Sideshow Rob has shown this team how to get down and dirty.

TP is my favorite Blazer ever, but he's no Lillard.

Lillard has brighter flashes, but Porter was more consistent in his prime (imho). But give it two more years; Lillard will get there.

Lillard and TP are just different kind of PG's IMO. TP is legendary for Blazers fans. Lillard becoming so.

The '98-'99 team was one of the unsung hero teams for me. I loved that postseason despite losing to the Spurs on the tippee-toe shot by Sean Elliott (damn him!).
I was really unhappy with the trade for Steve Smith (for JR Rider and Jimmy Jackson to ATL). Did not like it at all!!
