I'm almost sorry I'm bringing this up again, b/c someone will make it seem as if I'm fixated on it...
But, barring a trade, we have 11M in cap space (and a room exception), a probable record good enough to lose our draft pick and no other way to improve the team until 2015 (when LMA can leave) except for the MLE next year, the BAE next year and veteran minimum exceptions. So the question to everyone who thinks we can be a good team is this:
with the exact roster we have now, plus 11M on a center (who we may or may not be able to get without sending out something of value), are we contending for the Finals? Can we beat OKC, MEM, SAS in a 7-game series? If not, will adding an MLE player in the summer of 2014 get us there?
I like what we did last night. I think there's a tiny chance we can make the team a contender in the next two years if we hit a FA home run. But "waiting until the trade deadline" just seems to mean that we're probably hedging ourselves right out of a 13-18 pick in what most seem to call a great draft.
And if you're trying to get a trade for a disgruntled all-star, what are you going to give back? Sure, we have some young players. We don't have expiring contracts, and we don't have draft picks to trade away until at least 2016.
