If Aldridge is getting traded no matter what, do you still like Mags idea?

I wouldn't. If we lose Aldridge; there is no point to take a chance for contention. We absolutely need him to be successful.

I assume that if Aldridge is traded; it's gotta be some kind of grouping of draft picks 2014 and maybe a young star.

That's how I feel too. I like the idea a lot if Aldridge is here this season. If not, then let's go MM style and tank.... errr... shred salary and get younger... and keep Freeland....

I just don't see what team has the ability to give us only too 3 protected 2014 picks? If trading Aldridge is true; we gotta do a serious "tank fest"

IMHO, if LMA is here even until the trade deadline, and we get even a somewhat competent big man (at PF or C), we're going to be good enough to not have a pick at all in next year's draft.

I agree. If Aldridge is gonna get traded; then we should set up the 2013-14 tank fest. Round up as many 2014 picks that you can muster and make damn sure you don't have a winning record

I'd only consider it if the 2nd and 3rd years were team options.

With the Nets crazy trade yesterday, the Knicks need to do something to improve. Tyson Chandler was very ineffective vs Hibbert and was made the scapegoat by many NY fans. If they used the stretch provision on Amare, they could get under the luxury tax to do a sign and trade. It would also give them space to resign JR Smith.

Tyson Chandler and his 14M salary to us
We stretch Freeland or trade him to Philly and it would give us the room to accept him without giving up anything
NY signs Bynum to a deal starting at 11M and how many years it takes.
Philly gets future picks. Not much since we could just sign him outright and trade him at first opportunity

Well I'd tell Bynum to fuck off too. I pity the foo that gives him a huge guaranteed contact.

It won't be a large long contract; but 3 years with the third year as a team option isn't as big of a risk as you think.

On the Bill Simmons podcast a few months ago he mentioned that "word around the League" that Bynum will not get more than one-year on his next contract.

Ah man I thought I made that up! Props to you sir!

I still think it's a huge gamble; but huge reward if works

Doesn't really matter to me. Just funny how I mentioned it in May and got that response - but now in June, close to July, a lot more people are on board with virtually the exact same thing.

Personally, I just want the team to do SOMETHING to try and succeed

Easy. Be the only team that gives him 1 year + 1 year player option. Still only a two year risk.

He can be great, and opt out for more money. Or he can suck and still get paid an extra year.

I hate to say it I prefer tank this year. Next years draft is one of the best in a decade . We can easily be part of it with the possibility of an additional pick in a trade for LA. Kills me but I say all in on tanking!

Signing Bynum is idiotic, his knees are toast and he's an ahole - can't believe the short memories of B. Roy

The draft last night changed a lot, we got a 4 years senior ready to contribute immediately. If instead we took a young long term project Bynum wouldn't make as much sense. We might think of tanking for a pick next year. But now we might only be a center away from contending so the roster building strategy should change.

The Bynum deal has the biggest upside but definitely the biggest downside. Its an interesting fork in the road. I can't blame the team if they decide to avoid an injury prone knucklehead, a part of me would be relieved to not have to ride that roller coaster; but another part of me misses the glorious trader bob days and this would be his type of gutsy move. We haven't won a playoff series since trader bob left so it would be fitting to finally win some by following his ideals.

You really think we are a center away? Not trying to offend you but we also don't have any kind of bench and the guys we drafted are good players but not huge difference makers. We are a long long way from competing with the top teams in the west. Maybe we fight for a 7th or 8th seed at best.

Gonna keep this quote for safe keeping. I strongly disagree....

I'm almost sorry I'm bringing this up again, b/c someone will make it seem as if I'm fixated on it...

But, barring a trade, we have 11M in cap space (and a room exception), a probable record good enough to lose our draft pick and no other way to improve the team until 2015 (when LMA can leave) except for the MLE next year, the BAE next year and veteran minimum exceptions. So the question to everyone who thinks we can be a good team is this:

with the exact roster we have now, plus 11M on a center (who we may or may not be able to get without sending out something of value), are we contending for the Finals? Can we beat OKC, MEM, SAS in a 7-game series? If not, will adding an MLE player in the summer of 2014 get us there?

I like what we did last night. I think there's a tiny chance we can make the team a contender in the next two years if we hit a FA home run. But "waiting until the trade deadline" just seems to mean that we're probably hedging ourselves right out of a 13-18 pick in what most seem to call a great draft.

And if you're trying to get a trade for a disgruntled all-star, what are you going to give back? Sure, we have some young players. We don't have expiring contracts, and we don't have draft picks to trade away until at least 2016.

Didn't say I agreed about a center away from not contending. I was talking about fighting for the 7th-8th spot at best.

All I want to do next season is have a good shot at making it past the first round; then the following season we will have mle to offer another role player and possibly an allstar Lillard.

I think that if you add a healthy Bynum to this team without losing anyone, it goes from a borderline playoff team to one that can compete for HCA... and do so with its core quite young.

Of course, hoping for a healthy Bynum is hoping for a lot. Gortat or Dalembert or the other guys we've been discussing won't get us there, I don't think.

Gotcha. I think that can happen relatively easily. But a 7-8 seed does NOT have a "good shot at making it past the first round". Yes, the Grizz did it in 2011. The Bulls lost when Rose went down with an ACL and Noah sprained his ankle. Knicks won in a strike year. SEA lost in a best-of-5, and L*L in a best-of-3. That's in NBA history. In 2010 #7 seed SAS beat DAL, in the only 7 v. 2 series win since the playoffs went to a best-of-7. The average 8 seed wins 1.45 games per series, and the average 7 seed wins 1.35.

To fulfill LMA's stated goal, that's not gonna cut it.

All I'm saying we are closer to getting Wiggins than we are to winning a championship. Next years draft is full of game changers, guys who can completely alter teams franchises. Spending money on Bynum might help us win a playoff series or he might play 20 games and we've tied up our cap space to another anchor. He won't get less than a three year 12 mil deal. I hate losing but I see we are heading to no mans land 12-18 pick for next 5 years with maybe a playoff series win and that's it.

1eye- we've already boosted our bench considerably by drafting CJ. Plus, Will Barton and Meyers will be a year older. We can add to bench with MLE, no? Then sign Bynum. That makes us contender. Bynum, if healthy, is the best center in the league. Look how far GS went banking on an injured Bogut. Bynum is considerably better than Bogut.

Also- 1eye, you are underestimating the level Lillard is going to take his game to this season.
