after last yr's stellar backup role in GS in a contract year he's fallen off a good bit after the WIZ paid him

I don't buy it. Granted a few players have been known to play better in contract years, but those type of players are few and far between. Most are competitors and go all out regardless. JJ is a competitor. I would say it has more to do with his playing circumstances in Cleveland than his 4 year deal. (4th being a team option)

Having said all that...... he is over paid at 6.3 a year IMO

blazers get jeff green keneth faried
boston gets freeland gallinari and barton
Denver gets bass and wright

Turner is restricted, so there's very little chance we don't re-sign him.

I think Hawes would stay too. He's a NW guy and we can offer him nearly starter minutes. If he plays both frontcourt spots, we can find plenty of minutes for him.

At what price, though? You're trading away players on rookie contracts for Hawes, who will probably get ~$9m/per, and Turner, who somebody might offer more then the MLE at next summer. Throw in Nic's contract, LMA's upcoming max extension, and Lillard's rookie max, you're basically going to let RoLo go (no reason to use up ~$18m on the center position after next year), and any flexibility you have is gone, because you're well over the cap.

Still not enough. They're going to want some young talent for Faried. The only reason why they're getting rid of Faried in the first place, or are rumored to want to do so, is because he wants a payday.

Why would Paul Allen give a shit about being over the cap? Why protect cap space? Are we going to sign a big name free agent?

he also doesn't fit Shaws system very well though. I think if Karl was still coaching he'd be much more likely to stick there. He'd be a beast for a team like Golden State. I could see something like a Faried for Lee swap being good for both teams

Is adding the 2nd and 3rd best players from a 15-win team going to elevate the Blazers to a title run? I think Hawes, for his style of play, is a massive downgrade from RoLo, in terms of what has made this team effective. Go over the cap in adding another All-Star. You don't handcuff yourself by overpaying for Spencer Hawes and Evan Turner. There is literally no way that trade will happen though, so at least we've got that going for us.

We already have a stellar starting five. Adding Turner and Hawes would give us one of the best 7 man rotations in the league. Hawes would be an incredible asset for the bench. He is capable of playing both frontcourt positions. Turner might even be good enough to displace Matthews from the starting lineup. It's hard to say. Keeping Turner wouldn't be hard because of his restricted status. Hawes would be more difficult, but I don't think he's going to get paid too much.

We're adding those guys to bolster the bench though, not to play the same roles as they currently have on our team. Just because they can't lead a team by themselves doesn't mean they can't be two very good bench players on a championship caliber team. You don't have to mess the starting 5 up at all and the bench becomes one of the best in the league. It's a win now move but the Blazers are in that mode now. Robinson, CJ and Meyers could be good-very good players in 5 years but Hawes and Turner are ready to contribute now.

You'll be paying starter money to 2 bench guys, with no guarantee that you're going to even keep Hawes. Plus, you may have to overpay for Turner, if some team wants to throw $8m/per at him. This for two players who play for one of the worst teams in the NBA. One constant on this board that remains over the years is the fascination with average players from very bad teams, and people wanting the Blazers to trade for them.

I agree with you about Turner being average, but Hawes has been putting up good numbers for three years now. The aspects of his game that intrigue me the most--the 3-point shooting and the passing ability--are things that should be able to translate to a good team without any issue, and would fit in perfectly with Stotts' scheme.

As for Hawes getting paid, if we were able to trade for him, and he continued to produce comparably to what he's been doing, I think he'd be well worth 8-9M as a third big along with Lopez/Aldridge. If not, then we let him go for no more than the cost of cutting bait on Leonard & Robinson (the only significant pieces I'd be willing to offer for Hawes).

Lopez is going to get paid after next season, though. Probably near $10m if he keeps up his level of play. You'd be paying Hawes $8-9m, RoLo $8-10m, LMA $18m, Lillard $13m, and Batum $11m. That's not including Turner in the deal, because I don't think it's realistic for Philly to trade him along with Hawes for bench scrubs and no draft picks.

That's a minimum of $58m right there for 5 players, and you haven't even addressed a SG or a solid back-up PG.

No way you can pay both RoLo and Hawes that much money, IMO. If Hawes is leaving Philly, may as well wait until this summer to try and get him. Otherwise, you're potentially giving up 2 lottery bigs for 2 months of Hawes.

I'd still rather have Asik over Hawes.

Actually, Dame's not getting paid until 2016/2017, after Batum's contract expires.

Wes comes up for extension before Batum does, and we also have CJ and Crabbe at SG. Backup PG could (should) be addressed with MLE this offseason.

Depends on whether or not that crew is good enough to reach the WCF. If so, then you absolutely do it, even going into LT, if it means keeping a title contender going.

Do you think Asik can guard Howard? My guess is yes. But you know who would know for sure? Houston.
And if he can why the hell would they trade him to a team they could very well meet in the first round?

Let it go. It is not going to happen.

I agree with you about Turner being average, .

I agree that Turner is average, but so is Lopez and look how much better he makes Portland. I really don't know how Turner would fit in with Portland, but as I said before, "on paper" he seems like a good fit.

Going forward I think we either need a tall back up PG who can come in and guard Sg"s when Lillard and CJ are in the game, or a defensive SG with great passing and ball handling skills to play with them. From what I understand, Turner would fit that criteria. An average player, but a good fit for the Blazers. He, Wes, and Nic would be a great 3 man rotation at the SG/SF spots.

Rumors of Jeff Teague to the Knicks. Looks like Felton has lost another team.

What makes you think Lopez is average? Didn't he put up a decidedly above-average 18.9 PER as a starter in NO last year? And hasn't he been pretty well above-average this season as well? I don't think the comparison is quite analogous.

Honestly, I was being generous calling Turner "average". He hasn't sniffed average in 4 years. As a #2 overall pick.

You make some solid points. I'm just not as sure on Hawes re-signing, and I'd rather keep CJ and Leonard (or whatever the deal would be) to use later in a trade that may yield more than a 2-month rental. In the scenario I was reading here, CJ is gone to Philly as part of a deal for Hawes, so SG is still an issue, depending on what becomes of Wes.
