Trade for Tyrus Thomas?

Wojo says Bulls are talking with Knicks -- Thomas and Jerome James for Al Harrington.

I'd give them Outlaw and Blake for him in a heartbeat. Too bad Outlaw is on the shelf and they have no need for Blake. Harrington is actually a fairly serviceable player, and is an expiring just the same.

Thomas could be the backup 4 we need, he's also a restricted FA this summer, so we would hold all the cards with him.

What would it take? (Maybe some combination with Deng/Kirk?)

Harrington can still score in this league, so I don't think the Bulls would trade Thomas for an injured Outlaw and a failing Blake. I like the idea of adding Thomas though. He's a decent spark plug off the bench. It would be great if we could work something out.

Yup. I suspect we would have to include Rudy, but we wouldn't do that without them including Deng (or maybe not even then), which in turn I don't see them doing.

They had discussed a Deng for Rudy swap on the Bulls forum not that long ago. Yes, I wouldn't trade Rudy for Thomas.

I don't see how a Tyrus to the Blazers deal would work out for the Bulls if it didn't include Rudy. Even then, it would leave us woefully short-handed up front. So it seems to me that it'd be a hard thing to pull off.

If we combine Tyrus + Deng, we in some ways make that problem worse, because Deng plays the 4 for us as well. And while I'd like to trade Deng, I don't think the Bulls are up for it. Trading Tyrus for Harrington, however, seems like exactly the sort of move the Bulls would make.

Tyrus Thomas just doesn't make much sense for us so long as Nate is our coach. He seems best suited for a running game, which is indeed why D'Antoni is supposed to be interested.

Who assumed we can just butt in and get him? I don't think it's particularly realistic, but the fact they are talking means he's available and he's a player many here think could fill a void for us. Besides... wtf else is there to talk about till tomorrow?

Supposedly that's currently the case with McGrady, and Thomas isn't exactly known as a lockerroom asset.

Obviously not for his offense. But it's funny you would mention he's Outlaw without a jumper: he shoots at a .447 FG% and .511 TS% (Outlaw: .443 FG%, .512 TS%). Anyway, he's significantly better than Outlaw in terms of rebounding and shot blocking (5.1 BLK% and 14.2 TRB% as opposed to Outlaw's 2.7 BLK% and 9.4 TRB%).

I showed that he's about as effective an offensive player in terms of scoring, while being a superior rebounder and shot blocker, which is important since we are talking about the backup 4 spot when Batum comes back.

I think Outlaw is a good reserve, but I'd much rather have Thomas. His rebounding actually gives him similar productive value to Outlaw's scoring ability, plus Thomas actually provides some excellent help defense (and better man defense than Outlaw).

Thomas is only a "bust" relative to his draft position...he's actually become a solid player and has real value. If Portland could acquire him for expirings like Outlaw and Blake, great. I can't see why Chicago does that. If it could be expanded, like to an Outlaw/Blake/Bayless/Fernandez for Thomas/Hinrich/Deng deal, I think that would fix a lot of things for Portland. I have no idea if that works by the CBA, though, and it would depend heavily on Chicago wanting to ditch salary.

IIRC Tyrus's attitude has been less then awesome on the Bulls with most of his grouching coming from playing time. I kind of think he will face the same problems here if not more so.


I don't know for certain since I don't really follow the Bulls that much. I just remember the sinking feeling I had in my gut when Portland drafted him. I also remember how happy I was when they traded him away.

Once again, Portland already has a guy with an inflated sense of his own abilities named Outlaw. I don't think Portland needs another dude like that.

If he came with other players who actually filled a Portland need then great. But a trade just for him would be a mistake.
