I'd rather take the chance on Bagley for a first round pick + DJ than gamble on an RFA like Lauri. Stats are similar but they have different skillsets. I think Bagley has a higher ceiling and probably more attainable for cheaper.
Not so sure on that. I think the Kings would want, significantly, more compensation for Bagley.

You're mortgaging the future for today, but isn't that what ALL the contenders are doing?

yeah but they’re doing it for impact players not reclamation projects and role players. I have no issue “mortgaging the future” but it’s gotta be for players that are worth it. Markkanen is not the difference between a championship.

Bagley is a RFA after next season, guys in that situation with minimal production don’t fetch first rounders. Sacramento will probably have to settle for a second and maybe another younger player. I’d actually want Portland to look at a trade for him just for that reason. That’s the type of move we could/should make.

Trading first round picks lotto protected or not for role players isn’t a very good strategy. Those are assets that could be used for bigger trades, if not to fill out a roster with young, cheapish talent.
the roco deal was a really stupid overpay in hindsight.

ended up being Isaiah Stewart (who is projecting to be a quality starting level big) and Sengun (who might be the steal of the 21 draft) + Ariza for Roco.

Even if we blow it up at the deadline, we aren't recovering TWO first rounders for Roco. Woulda been OK if Roco ended up being the final piece to a title contending puzzle, but we aren't any closer to that now than we were when we first acquired him.

I think Markkanen is underrated as a player. He was on an ascending plain till Boylan screwed everything up.

I like Markkanen in a vacuum too, I just don’t wanna give up a first on top of paying him 10m+. I’m guessing that’s the holdup with teams as well.

Could be. I think he will have to take a minimum deal and & prove his value.

But we really don't know the Blazers won't be contenders. Maybe they will be. Everything is an educated guess right now. A lot of the main contenders have flaws as well. Injuries play into it as well. Maybe RoCo ends up being a key piece when it's all said and done. I like to give the Broncos story, because after that awful loss to Jacksonville in '97, many thought it was time to move on from Elway, and break the team up. They didn't, and the rest is Super Bowl Glory.

I have a harder time with the fact that the Rockets got Christian Wood for Ariza and the 2020 pick and still had the 2021 pick afterwards. I'd rather have Wood than RoCo. All of that said, the deal was done and now we have RoCo who is a quality contributor and with a focus on defense and ball movement on offense, he might pay even more dividends this upcoming season.

It is 99.999999999% sure we won't be contenders. Sure, hell could freeze over, but it is incredibly unlikely.

We had no shot at getting Wood so pretty irrelevant to us acquiring Roco or not.

Why would Minnesota or Indiana do that?
Agree about Indy not really wanting CJ, but rather than Minny, I was thinking that Toronto was the ones who got robbed in that. Wolves get Siakam and a first for KAT (who supposedly wants out), and adds a solid defensive center in Nurkic--that's not a bad reimage of their roster.

ya if any team got the short end, I thought it woulda been toronto. Need to rework this.

If Olshey just pulled off these two trades I would be ecstatic. No I don't hate Nurk, I just don't like his fit with Simmons.

That feels like a massive overpay for Boucher.
Except what you're really paying for is the ability to put a quality shooter at the 5 alongside Simmons, as well as a backup PG (I know it's hard to recognize those since we haven't had one here in forever...)

Probably don't need a backup pointguard if you get Simmons.

They’re not gonna trade Malachi Flynn I don’t think. He’s gonna be good. Nice young piece, akin to maxey. More than a throw in.

On defense, sure. On offense, it would be worse than Joel Embiid.

no it wouldn’t. Nurk is a much better playmaker than Embiid, even while being shackled by Stotts. He’s also improved as an outside shooter, albeit on low volume. I doubt he’s a 40% shooter with more looks, but there’s no reason he couldn’t be as good of a shooter as Embiid. He also doesn’t clog the paint with touches. Nurk is a role player that can feature more. Embiid is a straight feature player that demands the ball.

I see these trade ideas and keep thinking we're always overpaying. Then, when someone points out that we're overpaying, the person proposing the trade seems to come back offering to add even more Blazers' assets to sweeten the pot ....

Right now it doesn't matter what we pay, it matters what we get. If we have to "overpay" to put the best team on the floor, so be it.

Nurk would be great next to Mr. Nightlife. Trading Nurk in that scenario leaves a major whole in the frontcourt. Pass!
Boucher protects the paint on defense. The thing he does on D that Nurk can't is get out on the perimeter and then recover to still protect the paint. On offense the guy either hits spot up threes or he cleans up... not as dynamic as Nurk but would be more of what we need. Simmons is close to as big as Nurk. No holes would be left IMO.

Simmons and Nurk together on offense would be redundant and I don't see them as a fit. I also think that while Nurk is a first class defender in the paint, he isn't mobile enough for certain aspects of today's game. With the roster we have now and if we just add a better forward that doesn't have all of the unique skills of Simmons... I would keep Nurk for sure.
