Fittingly the Orlando Magic are up next. Like the Knicks they are a team that I think CJ would thrive playing on as he would unquestionably be their primary ball handler and scorer. Last year I heard their GM actually say that they wanted to shift from focusing on the draft to more proven players. They didn't end up going that route but I wonder if struggling through another season would lead to them going for options like CJ versus the draft. I love Bamba's potential but I'm going to guess/assume that he is off the table in a CJ trade, plus getting back a center as the key piece of a CJ trade doesn't make a ton of sense to me with Nurk already manning that position. I wouldn't mind getting Isaac but his playing style is so passive that I wouldn't want to give up something good to bring him in and I don't think Orlando would just throw him in a deal either.
Just for @yuyuza1: CJ for Aaron Gordon. I personally wouldn't do this trade. I think Gordon in theory should be better than he is and that in his 5th season maybe he is more hype and flash than actually a good basketball player. If we're trading CJ because of a lack of shooting efficiency it doesn't make sense to me to bring in a less efficient player. I can maybe be swayed on this a little given that getting him out of that horrible situation in Orlando might be all he needs to excel because he does have the physical skills needed to be a star. I have to question his work ethic if he isn't improving but he is still only 23 and could still pop. If we're wrong and he is the same player he is in Orlando then we threw CJ away in my opinion.
CJ, Swanigan, and Stuaskas for Evan Fournier, Terrance Ross, and 2019 1st (Top-5) protected. Fournier is having a really bad year and isn't as good as CJ but in theory he could at least play a role similar to CJ and his passing is more aligned with CJ's in his best year, but still a step down. His contract is a flat $17 million a season for the same length as CJ's so it's $10+ million and $12+ million less than CJ's the next two years. Is that amount of savings worth the dip in production? Ross would be an okay stop gap at wing for the rest of the season and we would have his bird rights if he played well enough to warrant keeping him. Until this year he hasn't been worth the money either though. I'd probably pass on this trade too but I do love acquiring potential lottery picks so I wouldn't hate it either.
Super Crazy Trade Alert: CJ and Swanigan for Timofey Mozgov, Jonathon Simmons, Orlando 2019 1st (currently 7th), Orlando 2019 2nd (via Cleveland currently 31st), Orlando 2019 2nd (via Brooklyn currently 45), and Orlando 2021 1st. We'd probably be a lot worse off the rest of this season but would have 2 1sts and 2 2nds plus another future 1st to really boost our ability to either move up for a real difference maker in the draft or to use as trade assets. This would be super risky, especially if CJ sparked Orlando on a run at the end of the season but it is also the type of risk that could turn into Zion if we got lucky. I doubt anything like this would ever happen but for those that don't like being a treadmill team this type of trade would be one way to get over the top or slip and knock our head on the treadmill.
