Trade Trade(s) fallout

Olshey has made a habit of tinkering at the deadline. We have made a habit of being worse in the second half of the season. Coincidence?

2018 1st Round pick (Top-10 protected) from Cleveland
A future 2nd round pick from Miami
Cash considerations from CLE and ORL
Brian Roberts to fill the Tim Frazier slot
.....and for all that, Portland gave up a reported future 2nd round pick to ORL.

That shows us giving nothing for Roberts, because what we gave hasn't been announced. Also, the 2nd we gave for Varejao isn't far below the 1st we got for him, if we remain at .500.

Isn't the pick we get coming from the cavs? Why would our record have anything to do with that?

Anybody heard how Dame feels about this? Frazier was his wingman......

I cannot imagine any scenario in which a trade was not run past Dame before being finalized. In the end, Dame wants to win, and I can't believe he thinks Tim was a longterm part of a winning team.

ya really think his "tinkering" of switching backup PG's will effect the team in a negative way? Hell, Rberts as a lot better than Frazier and our backup PG plays very little minutes

At some point dame is gonna have to realize this team isn't his own personal friends club and we as a fanbase are going to have to stop worrying every time we trade or cut one of his friends.

The guys on this roster have been together half a season....the guys that left here last summer had been here for many, many years..I think Dame has adjusted pretty well considering.

Yeah, chemistry will be fine. Dame knows Frazier was not a long-term asset. A friend, yes... but he's starting to realize more and more it's a business.

Listen Dame is not a bitch, he knows this is a business, shit the way he talks and conducts himself he might have a front office job one day hes not dumb he knows whats up.. This aint LaMarsha we talking about here

LOL! I don't know why, but this made me laugh. It was such a good point, but the wording just made me giggle.

Getting to the salary floor is a total non-event. If anything, it might piss the players off, because if you end up below it, the players get a bonus.

2nd round picks are fun at draft time, but honestly, who cares?

Getting to the salary floor saves Paul Allen money, because instead of paying the whole difference to the players, you only pay the pro-rated amounts to the new players that get you to the salary floor.

And an asset is an asset, even if it's not a great asset.

Mann LOL it pisses me off to hear OHH HES GONNA BE MAD BC FRAIZER LEFT.. Dame can call him anytime he wants and hang out with him whenever he feels like it, hes not a bitch he understands the business. I've always said Dame is one of the best leaders ive ever seen lead a team, he'll swag this whole move out better than Olshey the next time a microphone is in his face

So Portland traded for Varejo, immediately waived him and then added Brian (don't call me Bip) Roberts.

In addition, the Blazers receive CLE 2018 1st round Draft pick (Top-10 protected) and a future 2nd round pick from MIA. Also, it is being reported the Blazers will get cash considerations from CLE and ORL from the Varejo trade.

Portland waived Tim Frazier to complete the Varejo trade but will use the 'Stretch Provision' to lessen the impact of his contract for next season which will then count for only around $2Million each season until that provision is exhausted.

So:

2018 1st Round pick (Top-10 protected) from Cleveland
A future 2nd round pick from Miami
Cash considerations from CLE and ORL
Brian Roberts to fill the Tim Frazier slot
.....and for all that, Portland gave up a reported future 2nd round pick to ORL.

Certainly not a 'needle-mover' but all in all, POR got back more than it sent out.
Such an Olshey move. What's not to like?

This deal sort of has the feel of trading "one red paperclip for a fish pen"

So nothing earth moving, but Neil came out ahead. I mean what the hell was Frazier ever really going to do here. Churning the bottom of your roster to get incrementally better is just solid management.
as is adding a future 1st and 2nd with that capspace which almost all remains available this summer

No. For Varejao, we got Cleveland's 1st and gave (our, I assume) 2nd to Orlando. For Roberts, we got a 2nd from Miami and gave...it hasn't been announced. I assume the 2nd we gave is ours. If it's a 2016 pick, and we drop below .500, we didn't gain much by trading the 2nd for Cleveland's 1st.

But if we're in "go young" mode, why get Roberts?

We don't have to "win now"; we don't even have to place now. We just have to make the playoffs now. That gives Denver our draft pick, freeing up the 2017 pick for horse trading come the summer. So yes, as far as it goes, "winning now" is making the playoffs. Our biggest weakness of the first 54 games is too many minutes for Dame and CJ, because Frazier couldn't hack it.

As we head towards the playoffs, we know we have a good three-guard rotation with Hendo/CJ/Dame. But if we have a competent (and let's be clear, Roberts is -- by PER standards -- our fifth or sixth best player coming in) backup PG, we can rest our key guys more, and maybe get a win or two in the playoffs because we aren't exhausted reaching them. We'll know if we should keep Hendo, if a player like Roberts (but younger) is who we should pursue, and who on the team is going to deserve a seat on the bus.

Signing Roberts is a simple move to shore up a weak position (backup PG) that could have more complex, positive ramifications into the future. Roberts isn't an end, but a means to discover the correct end.

I just checked and we don't own any 2nd round picks in 2016 or 2017. As of yesterday. So that's good news. By 2018 we'll be a better team, I think.

That's a pretty darn good post.

Podnuh.
