Notice Trading Batum makes sense

Sacramento considers Gay as one of their cornerstones. Even though S2 thinks Batum can "slide over to the 2", it's not obvious other teams would be willing to risk this.

Orlando is at least a year away from trying to get a vet bump.

Detroit has pick #8. If Winslow somehow drops to #8, do they really want Batum instead? If Winslow doesn't drop, is there anyone we'd want at #8?

Orlando added Frye last year. They're not "at least a year away" from wanting that bump. They have a young pg, sg, pf, c. They have a sf that is a rfa this offseason. They don't really need more youth.

And it's not like batum is adding an older very. He's 26 going on 27. Perfect for a younger team looking to take the next step

Yeah, Add Batum to Orlando and they are a playoff team. They have really built a good roster in a short amount of time. They also have a ton of trade assets in Aaron Gordon, Andrew Nicholson, Mo Harkless, Tobias Harris, etc.

I really like Dewayne Dedmon too.

The biggest problem with keeping Nic is he is a free agent next summer. If he was just starting a 4 year contract I'd be less inclined to trade him. But with him being up for a new deal either he plays bad this year in which case we'd probably have been better off just trading him now or he plays good and we have to give him a big raise next summer when he's already making $12 million. Does Nic make sense on this roster making $16 million? How much value does he really provide to the team at that price.

That being said he definitely has value here so I'm not trading him just to dump him. But if the team can include him in a sign and trade for say Greg Monroe on a longer term deal I'd do it. Plus that would open up minutes for resigning both Afflalo and Wes. I'm a big Afflalo fan and think him with Wes and a MLE free agent would give us just as much production from the SF position as keeping Nic.

Do you think another team is going to offer him $16M? I don't see it. Just because his contract will be up doesn't mean he'll automatically be due another max deal.

Next off season 16m will the equivalent to a 10m contract with the cap hold going up so much.

Would want at least a Top Ten pick for him or two young players with potential.

Yes I think a team like Utah, Minnesota, Boston or Detroit that strikes out on other free agents will. The cap will be going up to over $80 million and those teams might as well all spend it; there won't be any reason to save cap space as it'll go up again in two summers from now to over $100 million.

1) adding Frye was a mistake for Orlando last year.
2) Wow, I forgot Nic was so young, may he does make sense for Orlando. Though, maybe he makes sense for US since he's only 2 years older than Lillard.

Barnes is a better defender then Batum? You could MAYBE make an argument for that 5 years ago, you can't now. Tyson is injury prone and if Lopez plays like he did at the end of the season and doesn't ever get back to how he played last year and the beginning of this year then a healthy Tyson would be better. Tyson isn't a better fit offensively, just because he likes to dunk doesn't mean he is better offensively then someone else. Deandre Jordan can dunk but he isn't as good offensively as Lopez. Lopez has a decent shot to about the FT line, Chandler doesn't.
I don't understand the deal with Blazers fans and their bigs. They hate bigs that can dunk and want all their bigs shooting jumpers... I hate hearing "all he can do is dunk" like it's a bad thing. Hear this all the time with DeAndre. Tyson and DJ are GOOD at dunking. There were so many times last year where a blazer big shot a BS layup/hook shot where one of these guys would've went up and PACKED IT.

WE NEED MORE 10 FOOT JUMPERS FROM ROLO!!!! NONE OF THIS DUNKING GARBAGE!

I never said I hate to see dunking. There is nothing wrong with dunking, its fun to see happen, but when thats ALL the player can do then not only does it limit that player it also limits what the team can do on offense.
Rolo can come set a pick and then either roll towards the basket or get an open mid range jumper. Being able to move away from the basket and drag his defender with him opens up the paint for someone who wants to drive or cut to the basket. Its a really nice skill for a defensive big to have.

no big is gonna decide to take away a Role mid range jumper compared to a Damian Lillard drive. Plus I don't think we want a Rolo mid range jumper over a dunk...

With Rolo, you can't throw it up for him. A big can pressure the Pick n Roll ball handler and still stop a roll man like Rolo by stepping in front of the passing window (where Batum throws his passes)

With DJ and Chandler type of Centers, you can throw them pocket passes and lobs on the pick n roll. If the big pressures the ball handler, you just have to float it towards the rim where they'll throw it down for an automatic two points. The only way to take away that lob is to sag back, this opening up to lane for the drive.

Actually yes they are, they are going to move out and follow Rolo a little bit, happened a ton last year and a decent amount before he went down this year. Rolo is a great at rolling to the hoop after a PnR, he doesn't catch lobs because we really don't run a lot of lob pass plays, also a lob isn't a play you can run every single time and the threat of a lob doesn't open up the paint because it requires the big to either get really really deep into the paint or to have a player divert the defending centers attention and let the player they are defending get close enough uninhibited towards the rim to throw one.
I don't get this whole mentality of assuming I want Rolo to shoot a jumper instead of having him dunk it or another player drive and dunk it. All i'm saying is that having a big who can shoot from a little distance opens up the paint and it does it one hell of a lot more then any "lob threat" a center has.

nothing you said made any sense. I don't know how to respond. I'm talking about throwing a lob on a pick n roll. Have you ever seen Dwight Howard or Jordan on a pick n roll and how a gaurd will throw the ball up and they'll go get it? It's a 99% shot. And they get those 2 or 3 times a game. I'll take that over three 40% Robin Lopez jumpers. And I never saw an opposing big respect Rolos jumper over the driving guard. Please find me a clip where that happens once. I guess you didn't understand we were talking strictly pick n rolls here

I'm with you on this one Bones. No one is giving up a drive over a Rolo jumper.
An athetletic big man off the PnR sure would help.
Rolo doesn't have the athleticism, but Meyers certainty does. I would love to see a few PnR's a game with him involved next year, he can obviously shoot with a soft touch inside, and he has all the tools to go up and get a lob.

Before a big man can dunk a lob, a lob must be thrown. Therein lies the problem.
Adding Chandler (ugh) isn't going to get us anymore 'oops than we currently get because we simply don't throw lobs. It's a mixture of personnel (mediocre passers, by and large) and coaching (conservative; doesn't know how to orchestrate motion offense moving towards the basket).

I want Rudy and Dre back solely to show Dame how to throw lob passes. Sigh

Pretty much nailed it blue.... When we had Miller, Sergio and Rudy; we were the #1 dunk team and Aldridge was leading the league in dunks made. We just don't have the PG that looks to pass like we had in Miller. Maybe that's something Dame should really work on this summer? If Batum does come back and Dame improves this facet of his game, we could game plan more of these types of baskets. We actually need at least 2 players, maybe even 3.

I would lean towards the lack of emphasis by the coach. When they look to lob they do just fine, i.e Clipper game when we came back to win in LA. The coaches saw a weakness and drew Jordan away from the basket and went to the lob down the stretch and OT.

I have seen Dame do it, so I know he can. But if the offense is focused out on the perimeter, or feeding it methodically to LMA, then my guess is they just don't emphasize it unless it is an inbound pass.

Its not a lack of passing skill at all. Those are the EASY passes. they don't throw lobs because Kaman and Rolo can't get off the ground while LA and Meyers only pick n pop and play outside

The pass might be easy, but the big has to create the passing option AND the guy with the ball has to recognize - at the right time - that the option is being created.

create the passing option? its not that hard to roll towards the hoop. An athletic big creates more of a passing option because you can throw it in a bigger window and he'll still go get it.

So if the pass is easy, and creating the passing option is easy, we should be alley-ooping on every offensive possession.

Its easier to score because it's easier to score on a dunk then a jumper. It's that simple. Of course it won't happen that much, it'd just be more of an offensive threat than Robin Lopez

Hey, I'm one of the biggest critics of the way we play offense. We need higher percentage shots. But getting higher percentage shots is a lot more difficult than just getting a "dunker" on the roster. It starts with the coach and his offensive scheme, but also relies on having a PG/passer with good court vision (only Nic has above-average court vision), and bigs who can create space around the hoop (we don't have any). Those three things need to work together in order to create high-percentage shots.

True, but I think that Stotts would work at getting an athletic big man the ball at the rim. He doesn't do it now because he doesn't have a big that can go the role of high flyer. And I think we have good passers, but they don't trust Rolo, Kaman, and even LA to go finish the play

So Taj Gibson is reportedly "very angry" about Thibs firing. They'll have no cap space this summer and they need to upgrade at SF. I think they'd be extremely interested in Batum, except Taj doesn't fit our needs. We could work out a 3 team deal where Taj goes somewhere, that team sends us a package, and we send the Bulls Batum
