Trading Raef in the Summer clarification... (1 Viewer)

So help me out on this since I have no idea how this works...

Assuming no last minute deal is gonna be reported how does trading Raef in the summer work? Im pretty sure I have read from some of you that that is a possibility but I dont know how. When exactly does he become a FA? I assume there is a set date that Im not aware of.

Raef is worthless now. We will have "paid" his contract by the time he is "tradeable" again.

EDIT: Or he is going to be FA/Retired. Either way, he's useless now as a tradeable asset.

and to answer your question, i think he will be a free agent before teams can trade again

He can't be traded. Canzano had something up about trading Raef at the end of the year in a blog post, was called out on it heavily on his blog and to read Larry Coon's site, and immediately took it off.

You sure. Not doubting you but I know I read differently (in here for whatever thats worth)

Can you do that? Re-sign injured players for one year, and turn them into super expiring contracts that insurance pays for after 41 games? And do the process all over again?

I suppose you could. It just costs PA quite a bit of cash. Unless, of course, 80% of it is covered by insurance!!!

I don't think the insurance would cover a player known to be injured when he was signed.
Plus the fact that Raef isn't permanently injured, as far as we know. He's just out for the year. He could conceivably play next year.

He can't be traded. His value in the league is now the value of his play--nothing.

sounds to me like insurance fraud....how about everyone who is danger of forclosure just burns there house to the ground while their at it. Definately not possible. Insurance companies are in the business of taking your money...not handing it out.

The value no longer lies in a trade, it now becomes cap space for a free agent. You probably had gathered that by now, but figured it should be stated. When you add in the 3 million dollar salary exception, you start to get the numbers people are talking about in other threads which discuss who can be had for X dollars.

His value for a pre deadline trade assumes we could get something better now on the trade block than we can on the FA auction block (at a lower dollar figure). We must now believe that KP was not able to find such a deal that would be worth risking current team chemistry, thus no trade.

The math that needs to be done now is to look at all the teams, and how far under the cap they will be this Summer, and see where we rank in terms of being able to offer money. Compare that to a list of teams that need a PG or SF, what players will be on a restricted list, and you can begin to speculate who will go where. It could very well be that we will be in a position to offer money to a FA this summer from a team that will not have the resources to match us, getting a good bargain there. As has been mentioned elsewhere, the unrestricted list is not very good this season, so that is likely the way KP is headed.
