MORE DETAILS

The top eight teams will qualify for the quarterfinals, which will be played at team sites Dec. 4-5.

The Portland Trail Blazers landed in a group with the Memphis Grizzlies, Phoenix Suns, Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers for the NBA’s first in-season tournament.

The NBA on Tuesday announced the schedule for the tournament, set to begin Nov. 3 and wrapping up with the championship game on Dec. 9.

The league will be divided into six groups of five teams. Each team will face the other teams within its group once, with the top eight teams then qualifying for the knockout rounds.

The tournament includes $18 million in prize money. Players on the championship team will receive $500,000 each. Players on the second-place team will receive $200,000 apiece.

Players on the two teams that lose in the semifinals will receive $100,000 apiece and the players on the teams that lose in the quarterfinals will receive $50,000.

This in season tournament is a stupid idea. I doubt it will bring any extra attention to these games. Same fans who watch the normal regular season games will watch these games.

Maybe. Maybe not. Only way to know is to try.

Disagree, if the Blazers win the in-season tournament, it will be almost as big a deal as when we won that one championship in Summer League.

I'm ready for the championship parade already!

Go Blazers is to most of us what Go Lakers is to you.

It is an expression of team support, no matter how far-fetched it may seem at times.
Ahhhh I see. What were those birds that would follow each other off a cliff to their death?

At the end of the day what does it matter? The games were going to be played anyways. All they’re doing is adding a fancy name to some of the games.

Exactly FAMS. It's 4 guaranteed losses regardless right?

Super excited for these games. We know the Blazers have a near zero chance of making the playin or playoffs. But they do have a chance of winning 4 games.

This will go down history as the only first year of the NBA in season tourney ever.

It would be great experience for Scoot and Sharpe to get the closest experience to playoff atmosphere possible until hopefully in a few years we can begin to make the real thing.

These are just regular season games. Why will there be a playoff atmosphere?

It'll be interesting to see if anyone cares.
I don't see any reason to care about the "tournament" games more than other games.
Like I mentioned way back..... I feel the Suns will win this. They have like 4 guys making a killing and a bunch of guys on minimums right? Those are the guys who will be hungriest to get that Winner's Pot.

This tournament makes no sense. I can’t believe fans are even going to care about it.

I agree. The players will probably care because they stand to make some extra cheddar. Will that improve the intensity and competitiveness of those games? Is that why the league is doing this?

I think we have a much better chance of winning the Cup than we do in June so let’s do it and hang a banner in the rafters. Good experience for youngsters.
